“So they can play with people who are far away, I guess,” Bucky said with a shrug. “But they bet a stupid amount of money on games where they can’t see each other, and it seems awful foolish to me.”

She dealt out hands and nodded at Yelena’s next question. “You’re little animals in cars or on motorcycles. It’s cute.”

Yelena wrinkled her nose. “I don’t like things that are cute. Are there more realistic car driving games? This sounds cartoonish.” Secretly, she thought she actually might like it, but she didn’t want to appear silly in front of Bucky.

“No she didn’t tell me funnily enough. It was hard to ask her why she disappeared since she’d already done it,” Bryce said dryly. “But I would assume that the SHIELD leak had a lot to do with it. Switching cities makes sense if that’s the case but I’m not sure which city she would go to. You know her past better. Is there any city she has any kind of personal connection to?”

“Well, I don’t know how close you two were. I thought maybe she’d be considerate enough to tell you, but I guess she wasn’t.” Yelena huffed a little. She knew that Natasha wasn’t the type to tell someone where she was going, even loved ones, but at least Yelena had made the attempt. “She’d go to a city she wouldn’t have a personal connection to. If I know her, she would want to become invisible again, and going anywhere she has ties would be a bad idea.”

Aftermath - Regina and Yelena

The men from Hydra were long gone, but Yelena couldn’t make herself believe that the whole thing was over. It had to be a trick of some kind. She couldn’t remember the last time she had had any period in her life where she wasn’t fighting for her life in some fashion, so right now, everything felt incredibly disarming.

Regina had graciously allowed her to continue to live with her and her son, and it was the most baffingly domestic thing Yelena had ever witnessed. The food was nutritious, they ate at the same time every day, and everyone in the house tried to get eight hours of sleep nightly. Yelena had seen a lot of strange things, but this topped them all.

She was having a lot of trouble with the sleep thing, especially. So instead of sleeping, she found herself pacing around the living room at 3 in the morning. She didn’t want to wake up Regina and bother her, but there was no way she was going to be able to relax tonight. She looked out the window constantly as she walked, checking for any intruders. If nothing else, she could try to protect Regina and Henry in payment for their kindness.

Well then. As long as Yelena didn’t figure out that Bryce could technically be able to pay her more (physicist can be paid quite well, especially when they’re scary enough that no one wants to cheat them out of a cheaper salary), this could be easier than she thought. “Very good. Since we seem to have an agreement, I guess we should started, so go ahead. Impress me.”

Oh thank god. That would be enough to last her a month or two, and maybe she could get better work by then. This job made her uneasy since it involved Natalia and a prominent Avenger, but it was do this or starve. 

“Did she tell you why she disappeared? Because if she didn’t, I’m betting she ran because of all the information about her on the internet. People like us, we don’t do well when all our aliases are gone.” The thought was a nightmare for Yelena, but for once, it was a boon that no one knew or cared who she was. She supposed Natalia’s level of fame had doomed her in the end. “I think she’d switch cities, at the very least, if she wanted to establish a new alias. Since she seems to know too many people here.”

“Correct,” Christine agrees, and her tone of voice has gone a little chillier, though she’s not slowing down her steps. She would’ve thought acting as samaritan would get you less ungratefulness, but apparently not. “I do not have to be here, or help you, but that doesn’t mean you can’t treat me like an actual human being, so if we could forget about the death threats for a moment, that would be good.”

“I’m not the one making you do this. You chose it.” Yelena’s fully aware that Christine can drop her like a hot potato if she wants to, but the thought doesn’t bother her. She’s been abandoned before, and she can handle herself. “Fine, whatever, forget the death threats if you want. But I have to cover all my bases. I’ve been left bleeding with someone walking off to fuck me over before, and I’m not ruling out that it might happen again.” 

They reach her apartment complex, finally, and Yelena’s mortified to find that she can barely make it up the stairs without help from Christine. She hates being human and fragile, because it ends up making her require help from people who will capitalize on it later. When she speaks again, her voice is a little faint from how dizzy she’s feeling. “The one on the right.” She digs in her pocket for her key, hazily unlocking the door.

“Some people do. Apparently online poker’s a thing now, which I don’t understand at all, I gotta say,” Bucky said with a shrug. “Lots of video games, though, they’re loud with lots of shooting things. I don’t much care for them. But MarioKart’s fun.”

Yelena frowned. “Why would you play cards on a screen when there are real cards?” She considered the idea of Mario Kart. “Is that a driving game? I think I would like something like that.”

“Excellent. I don’t know what the current going rate is for hiring spies to track people but how does $3,000 dollars sound for a start?“

It was a herculean effort to keep her eyes from bugging out at the price, and she nodded, a little stunned. She hadn’t been making much money lately, living off just enough to feed herself, but she didn’t want to let Bryce know that in case she changed her mind about the price.

“3,000 dollars is fine.” More than fine.

She nodded. “There’s one called Old Maid that’s kind of similar,” she said, shuffling the deck with practiced ease. Bucky Barnes had always been good with cards, much to the chagrin of anyone who chose to take her on in poker.

Yelena watched as Bucky shuffled the deck, a little mesmerized by her movements. Bucky was obviously well practiced, and she waited for her to pass out the cards. “I suppose I could learn that. Do people even play cards anymore? It seems like people play things on screens now.”

“Oh, don’t be a drama queen.” Bryce scoffed. “People do things under threat of death all the time. You’re hardly the only person who’s ever been in that situation. Besides, you’re wrong. I’m not putting you under threat of death. You’d have to piss me off a lot more to do that. Though not too much or otherwise I’d do it right away. Sorry, getting off tangent. I’m a pretty renowned radiologist so I suppose I have the resources to pay you. The alternative is handing you over to SHIELD custody.”

Yelena listened to Bryce, her expression still an uncooperative glower. When Bryce mentioned money, however, the malice faded somewhat. “...I’ll do it for money. I would rather kill myself than be in SHIELD custody.”

Bryce let slip her expression of amusement as Yelena referred to herself as useless. “Did I say I needed you? If I did, it was an exaggeration. True, I can’t predict her, but I can track her. However, it’s less of a hassle for everyone concerned if I don’t considering that my method of tracking involves the Other Gal. So you can see why I’d prefer someone else to do the dirty work.”

“If I do your ‘dirty work’ for you and find Natalia, are you going to pay me for it?” Yelena cocked an eyebrow. “Or are you just going to make me do it, under threat of death? I’m sure your ‘Other Gal’ could maul me thoroughly. You’d be just like every handler I’ve ever had.”

No wonder Yelena was so irritated–eternal life could easily lead to eternal boredom and that was enough to make anyone irritated. It hadn’t taken Regina long to learn to enjoy plays and music. Without it, time passed too slowly and she had too much time to brood. Modern technology had allowed her to fill her free time with entertainment and, despite the fact that she was picky about what movies she did or didn’t like, it was at least something to do.

“Yes, I’m sure all the time you spend staring at the wall and thinking about how you wished that you had killed me when you had the chance sounds like an incredibly efficient use of your time,” Regina said. “Though, I do suppose hunting cows for food is incredibly time consuming. Whatever would you do with all your free time if cows weren’t apex predators?” she asked, voice laced heavily with sarcasm.

Yelena wondered if she was going to spend 100% of her time with her hackles raised while Regina was around, because Regina sure was doing a pretty good job of making that happen. She shot her another glare. 

“If you don’t stop making fun of me, I am going to tape your mouth shut. I don’t suppose they had gorilla tape back when you were young, but I know for a fact you won’t enjoy it.”

“Cards is fine. We could play durak or svoi kozyri,” Bucky offered, thinking that Yelena would be more familiar with Russian card games. “Or I could teach you some American games.”

Yelena relaxed a little when Bucky mentioned the familiar card games, managing something that was almost a smile. “Durak is fine. I know that one. ...but maybe later, you can teach me some of the American games?”

Another casual death threat, and Christine frowns even as she does start helping the other towards her home. “Please let’s not talk about killing me,” she says, not jokingly. “It’s really setting me on edge and I can’t walk away right now.”

Christine wouldn’t let herself walk away, not now, not after already deciding she’ll help. “Let’s just focus on getting you there. I know only basic first aid, but… better than nothing, right?”

Yelena shrugged, stumbling along the sidewalk. “No one said you had to help me if you don’t like the death threats.” Civilians were so easy to scare, and if Yelena had had more energy, she would have rolled her eyes.

“It’s...it’s just around that next corner, and a block down. Not too far now.” Yelena wasn’t sure how much basic first aid would help her, but at least the woman could get her to a place where she could safely crash on a couch in private.

“’You can’t predict her,’” Bryce repeated. “I see. What a shame. I was hoping that you would turn out to be useful. I really hate wasting my time.” Okay maybe she enjoyed being able to piss off other people a little bit too much.

“I don’t imagine you can predict her, either. So you’re just as useless as me.” Yelena couldn’t help bristling, having the feeling that this woman was enjoying giving her shit. “Otherwise, you wouldn’t have sought out this pathetic, second-rate Black Widow to help you out. I can’t imagine being so useless that you need my help, of all people.”
