a great sorrow, and one that I am only beginning to understand: we don’t get to choose our own hearts. we can’t make ourselves want what’s good for us or what’s good for other people. we don’t get to choose the people we are.
hello hello ! this is a STARTER CALL. like for a mid-to-long starter.
; hello every1 just want to point out that my character is often a pompous lil shit & you are totally justified in absolutely hating him.
𝚅𝙾𝙸𝙴𝚄𝚁,
kitsey loves skiing; kitsey loves skiing because all of her friends love skiing. and because skiing gives her a chance to shop for an entirely different wardrobe— puffy, zippered jackets replacing their less cruel & less padded New York counterparts. theo hates skiing. theo hates skiing because he’s only gone twice, and each time, ohh, kitsey & friends have been at first kind & sympathetic to his bunny-slope plight at first. but they soon grow tired of his lack of skill. theo can’t help but be slightly exposed for the faux rich that he is— his lack of skiing lessons as a child at a dead giveaway at his relative misfortune.
nevertheless, he is meeting kitsey & friends at this small town in the middle of maine ( “it’s quaint!” ), driving down in the type of car that shouldn’t really go further than a couple hundred miles after a long day at work. he’s almost enjoying the solemn, winding drive through the endless pines, with their tall, knowing impositions on the road. but of course, halfway down the road, he hears a loud popping noise and nearly veers off the road and down the side of the mountain.
theo exits & curses his way down to the nearest gas station. he spies an attendant outside & waves her down for her attention.
𝙰𝙳𝙾𝚁𝙴𝙳𝙷𝚁𝚃,
theo hates doctors. it’s not just that they have a knack for slipping in what they do for a living at opportune times during social gatherings, followed by the attendant and polite approval from everyone around them. it’s also not that they tend to be amongst the most serious people, perhaps as a result of brushing close to death on a daily basis. no, theo hates doctors because they invariably ask about his predilection — his problem, say— with pills. at first, theo made the mistake of disclosing how many ( and how often, and how many types ) of opiates he’d been consuming to his barbour approved primary care physician. but the shocked look on her face was the only indicator theo needed to stay far away from the truth, at least as far as doctors as concerned.
of course, he’s perfectly polite to the petite woman in front of him & smiles at all the correct moments. she’s perfectly harmless to him in this casual setting— they’re at a party, not a doctor’s office, for christ’s sake. but theo can’t help but wondering how obvious his dilating pupils must be & how much the woman must want to call him out on it. he presses forward, regardless. “ I — i sell furniture for a living,” he continues the conversation, hoping his eyes aren’t attracting too much attention.
hello hello ! this is a STARTER CALL. like for a mid-to-long starter.
