five moments jack and cassy shared at/about the lake house + 1 goodbye
one
jack: okay question
jack: you know we have the lake house right?
cassy: yes?
jack: and you have your summer break in august
cassy: yep
jack: would you
jack: and please don’t feel like you have to
jack: but i would like it very much
jack: if you came to hang out for a couple of days?
cassy: oh
cassy: i wasn’t expecting that
cassy: well
jack: like i said, you don’t have to at all
jack: but i wanted to spend some time with you this summer
jack: and you know, lottie’s there and it’s really sunny and we can go out on the lake
jack: and then september comes and you’re all around the world and i’m wherever
jack: i really just didn’t want to regret not asking
cassy: i’ll see what i can do
cassy: i usually go to australia
cassy: but i can go in the winter, it’ll be summer there then
jack: oh i wouldn’t want to keep you from seeing your family
cassy: they’ve been wanting to come to more races anyway
cassy: i should make that happen in fall somewhere
cassy: autumn? whatever you call it
jack: fall, yeah. you’re around too many brits, lottie is the same
cassy: livin the dream apparently
cassy: i’m around too many americans as well
cassy: there’s not enough aussies in this world

cassy: flatterer
jack: on second thought
jack: all the boys are just gonna fall in love with you
jack: maybe don’t come to the lake house
cassy: too late
cassy: charlie knows and my family has been informed
cassy: one week or two?
cassy: i can’t do three, i think the introvert in me will die
jack: i’ll take all the time with you i can get
jack: so however long you want
cassy: two weeks it is
jack: seriously?
cassy: yep
cassy: do i do first + second week of august or second + third?
cassy: also i will need an approximate list of who’s there
cassy: some stalking and consulting charlie will be done
jack: well the umich boys leave after the first week
jack: you wanna meet them you should come first and second
jack: i’d also understand if you didn’t though
cassy: who’s there after?
jack: honestly no clue
jack: probably gonna be just my family for a while
jack: parents will come by last week of august i think
jack: so you could do the full dose of hughes siblings if you’d like
cassy: i think i wanna do first and second but idk for sure yet
cassy: cool if i get back to you on that?
cassy: i wanna go to greece for the remaining week so i’ll get that set up first to decide
jack: for sure
jack: you can also still only do one week
jack: ’m kinda greedy when it comes to spending time with you
cassy: ur cute
cassy: i think i wanna do two if everything works out
cassy: i’m really excited for break now tho
jack: me too

jack had been buzzing with the excitement of getting to see his twin sister and his, well, flirt (?) (whatever) all week. he was closer to vibrating now. quinn had been exasperated by him for hours, spending most of their drive to the airport either shaking his head or rolling his eyes at his little brother‘s antics.
the two of them had taken charlotte‘s white convertible to the airport and had settled in adjoining chairs in the arrivals hall. jack‘s leg had been bouncing non-stop, his lip almost chewed bloody. being away from his twin sister always took a toll on jack but now that they were waiting on someone else, someone clearly important to him, too, his anxiety had seemed to increase tenfold.
jack‘s leg had slowed a bit by the time quinn had extended an arm around the back of jack‘s chair, just touching his shoulder, and then jack had been distracted immediately when a string of people started entering from the baggage claims.
quinn had expected jack to implode before charlotte and cassy even entered with how keyed up he‘d gotten himself, but instead he‘d calmed down significantly when the blonde and red-head stepped through the doors side by side, pulling their luggage behind themselves.
all his nervous energy seemed to have channelled into the smile on his face, because jack was beaming brightly by the time they had caught the girls‘ attention. quinn let jack hug charlotte first, as always, but stepped in to take jack‘s place and hold his sister close as soon as jack had moved on to cassy.
when charlotte had let go of him and they‘d turned around to jack and cassy, all that was visible of him through fiery curls were happy, smile-crinkled eyes.
his cheeks had flushed when he met his siblings‘ eyes afterwards, but he‘d slipped his fingers into cassy‘s and taken her suitcase to the car anyways.
charlotte and jack had insisted on sharing the backseat of charlotte’s car on the drive back to the lake house and cassy didn‘t mind the extra legroom that came with the passenger seat (or keeping her hand tangled with jack‘s while the twins slept curled towards each other).
cassy had intended to keep up a soft string of small talk for the drive back, quiet enough to not wake jack or charlotte and just stimulating enough to keep quinn awake while driving and maybe get to know him a bit but once they‘d gotten started their conversation had just kept flowing anyway.
the two of them had unloaded the car before waking up both peacefully napping twins and tackling the question of where would cassy sleep (probably next to jack sooner or later anyway but for now they‘d set up for her to share charlotte‘s room).
jack had made sure she was settled in, though, had asked her about ten times if she really was comfortable and if she’d find his room if anything were to happen during the night before he‘d reluctantly retreated back to his room to go to bed himself.
cassy: you forgot your sweatshirt here
cassy: so i'm sleeping in it
jack: i did that on purpose

waking up in jack‘s arms had been new, but definitely the good kind. miles of tan skin stretching over a summer bulk turned out to be cassy‘s favourite pillow and waking up slowly but surely to fingers tracing gentle patterns over her shoulder beat any other way to start the morning, easily.
the night before had been spent watching all harry potter movies in order with minimal breaks in between and cassy had fallen asleep somewhere between the end of order of the phoenix and the start of half blood prince, snuggled up neatly between charlotte and jack with half the umich hockey team strewn around them on couches and air mattresses.
cassy had been pleasantly tipsy by the time they‘d gotten through the first few movies, quinn had not only put in an order for pizza at the hughes‘ favourite italian place that did turn out to be heavenly, but also added a few bottles of red wine to it. that, and the heat of charlotte spooning up behind her and jack‘s shoulder under her head had lead her straight towards sleep.
she remembered being woken up by jack‘s gentle voice, slowly coming to in between quiet shuffling of people either cleaning up the remnants of their snacks and drinks or just waking up and blearily making their way to bed. charlotte had already gotten up from behind her and jack had wrapped his arm around her instead.
she‘d sat up slightly, rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and stretched, before settling right back into jacks‘s warmth and dozing for a bit more. she‘d listened to the rest of cleanups tucked under jack’s chin and smiled into his neck when charlotte‘s voice had softly asked „you got her, jacky?“ and he‘d mumbled his agreement into the top of cassy‘s head.
she remembered fragments of being carried up the stairs and being asked where she wanted to sleep, her face heating up when she realized she‘d told jack she‘d like sleeping in his bed. he‘d set her down in his unmade sheets and left her to snuggle into them, surround herself with his scent and through tired eyes watch him undress and ready himself for bed.
she wasn‘t sure if she really did remember him getting into bed or if she‘d already been asleep by then, but soft kisses to her temple disturbed her train of thought anyways. „good morning“ she‘d mumbled into his chest, snuggling a little closer, smiling when he pressed another kiss to her temple and whispered his own good morning into that same spot.

eyes closed and face turned towards the sun, cassy breathed in clean lake air and listened to the hum of conversation happening on the boat. she felt the gentle rumble of the engine beneath where she was leaning back onto her hands, legs stretched out and ankles crossed in front of her. luke and quinn‘s quiet murmur about when to go to the grocery store crossing over charlotte and jack‘s gossip about someone they‘d seen on their morning coffee run before going out on the lake.
„grapes, please, quinn“ she‘d directed towards the grocery list discussion. „and tortillas, we could take wraps or burritos out tomorrow.“ she‘d opened one eye to look to her left, finding quinn pointing a finger at her in agreement. „we should do that. hey, we could do grilled chicken and, like, a salsa or something. i‘ll add that to the list.“ cassy smiled at him in thanks, turned over to lay on her stomach and open her book back up to her bookmark.
charlotte settled in next to her not long after, bringing the box of watermelon pieces they‘d cut up to snack on and her own book. they‘d been trading books back and forth whenever they‘d see each other and held little book club meetings over face time whenever they found the time. they‘d fallen into easy conversation about both the books they were currently reading and quickly drifted towards extending their reading list and googling release dates for their favourite author‘s newest books.
they‘d let their conversation flow a little and then chose to lay back down on the blanket they‘d spread out on the front of the in boat, only mumbling quietly about whatever came to mind. jack joined them a bit later, pulling himself out of the lake and dropping his cold, wet body right on to cassy‘s sun warm back, startling her out of the light nap she‘d fallen into.
she‘d shivered a bit before slightly turning to one side and peeking at jack over her shoulder, laying her head back down lazily when he pressed a wet kiss to her cheek and grinned at her brightly. she‘d let him press tiny kisses to any patch of skin he could reach for a few minutes, then elbowed him lightly „you should put more sunscreen on, jacky“.
jack rolled his eyes at her but before she could launch into her daily-spf-reduces-wrinkles-and-the-risk-of-cancer-rant he‘d motioned for luke to throw him the sunscreen and sat himself down next to cassy to start reapplying.
„can you get my back, darling?“, he looked up at her through his lashes, never stopping rubbing the sunscreen into his skin. „only if you get mine after“ she answered, sighing once before sitting up and motioning for jack to turn around.
she smiled at the way he leaned back into her immediately, nuzzling his face into her neck and pulling her arms around himself for a second. she‘d pressed her lips to his shoulder briefly before she pushed him to sit up straighter so she could actually spread the sunscreen on his back.
cassy hummed when jack shivered at the cool lotion on his warmed skin, pushed into where he‘d reached his hands back for her before taking her time and lathering his back in sunscreen generously.
a softly smiling charlotte batted a hand at luke when he rolled his eyes at the way jack giggled when cassy painted little hearts and c‘s on his back before working the lotion into his skin properly.

jack‘s eyes had been fixed on cassy from about five minutes after she‘d entered their little gym. she and charlotte had convinced all three brothers to join them on a little pilates session and they‘d shown up in matching workout sets, chatting idly and setting up a few mats in the corner.
charlotte had taken over the music, shuffling her and cassy‘s shared playlist (a fun mix of boyband throwbacks and current pop hits) before both girls had started stretching. jack had just taken a drink, they‘d been shooting pucks at their little set up for about an hour before and were now indulging the girls‘ pilates idea, and immediately choked on his next sip when cassy sank into an easy split next to where charlotte was dropped into a deep lunge.
he continued watching her lean forwards and back while still staying in her splits, then turn without getting up to get her other side as well. he choked again when luke walked through his line of sight and he‘d realized he‘d been staring for way too long.
he‘d struggled taking his eyes off of cassy through their entire workout, gaze unconsciously following her every move through the rest of their warm up, the pilates flow itself and even after their workout was over and they were sweatily sprawled over their mats, passing water bottles and gatorade back and forth between them.
luke had left first, wanting to shower before anybody stole the hot water, while quinn sat himself down on their bike for a bit more cardio and charlotte soon took off for a cooling swim in the lake before taking her own shower. cassy had chugged the rest of her fruit punch gatorade before getting up and reaching for jack‘s hand to pull him up as well.
he‘d used that exact gesture to pull cassy close to him as soon as he was standing, press their sweaty bodies together and stumble both of them out of the gym clumsily. „didn‘t know you were that flexible“, he‘d mumbled into the sliver of space between them, let his hands roam her body where he‘d leaned her back against the hallway wall.
she‘d smiled at him amusedly, murmured back „yeah, that do it for you?“, then raised an eyebrow and laughed when a strangled sound escaped jack and he pulled her with him towards the bedrooms.

five + one
cassy doesn‘t know for how long she‘s just been laying awake in jack’s arms, but when the first signs of dawn start peeking through jack‘s window, she carefully peels herself out of his arms and trails downstairs on her bare feet. it‘s warm enough for her to sneak out into the backyard only wearing the soft pair of shorts and the worn, oversized shirt she‘d stolen from jack‘s dresser.
she stops briefly in the kitchen, locking eyes with quinn over the coffee machine and silently nodding at him in thanks when he turns back to it wordlessly and starts preparing a second cup.
while quinn takes his latte to go onto his daily trek to the little outdoor gym he likes to start his mornings at, cassy instead steps out onto the creaking back porch on the balls of her feet, trying to keep the wood as quiet as possible on her way to the dock, cappuccino in hand.
she shuffles around a little until she finds a comfortable position, lets her feet skim the surface of the quiet, peaceful lake and watches the sun rise over the water, bit by bit. when it‘s nearly up the dock creaks slightly behind her, and only moments later a body flops down onto the wood next to her ungracefully, draping an arm and a comforter over her shoulders in the progress.
cassy drops her head to jack‘s shoulder and takes another sip of her coffee, then lets jack take the mug out of her hands and drink the rest himself. his hand slowly migrates from her shoulder to her hair, twisting and twirling the strands between his fingers.
jack‘s voice sounds rough, from sleep still, when the first words cut through the silence over the lake. „when are you leaving today?“ cassy‘s shrug jostles him with how close they‘re sitting. „i think charlie wants to leave after lunch.“
jack‘s arm falls from her shoulder to her waist as she curls closer into him and pulls the comforter tighter around the both of them, cocooning them into their own little world.
jack does not like dating people he doesn’t know a least a bit so when he asks you out you’ve been friends for a minute and you’ve been to his apartment a few times. you’re still nervous when you ring his doorbell. he told you to dress casual so you’re wearing baggy jeans and a sweater and it’s your favourite outfit but there’s nerves anyway. they’ve melted away though, minutes into the date, because you’ve ditched the pizza-topping-preparing for hopping onto the counter and constructing the perfect queue of songs to play through the big speakers in the living room. soon enough the both of you are singing and dancing through jacks kitchen, eating half the toppings he’s prepared while throwing the other half on heart-shaped pizzas. all your nerves are forgotten when he twirls you into his arms, leans his forehead against yours and asks you if he can kiss you. (you might burn the pizzas because you’re making out like teenagers but that’s nothing a quick doordash order can’t fix).
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
quinn likes romance but not cliches. your standard dinner and a movie would be too predictable so he tells you to wear your comfiest outfit you want to leave your apartment with and picks you up right on time. you’re both in his car in sweats and hoodies and you make a pit stop at your favourite chinese restaurant (he made you put your order into his phone the second you stepped foot into his car) before he pulls into the drive-in. he tries to keep the movie you’re seeing a secret but once you drive by the sign reading pride and prejudice in big black letters, he watches you gasping quietly and smiling to yourself out of the corner of his eye. if by the end of the night you’ve snuggled up together in the backseat, front seats reclined so you can still see the movie, and he tells you he picked pride and prejudice because he caught onto you quoting it in a text a few weeks back, maybe this becomes the best first date of your life.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
luke needs that slightly competitive edge so he takes you to his favourite arcade. you’re going on a random wednesday night when the sign says closed (luke’s made friends with the guy at the front desk, a college student who’s working a side job to pay his rent) so you’re in there alone. it’s a little awkward at first, you’re slightly nervous and luke’s a little like a shy puppy, talking away until his brain catches up with what he’s been saying but after a few minutes you’ve found the dance dance revolution nearly hidden in the back and it prompts a night of endless giggles. lukes long limbs trying to keep up with the instructions look objectively hilarious and you can’t imagine you look particularly graceful dancing while doubling over and heaving with laughter either. you try out most games in the room, trying to one-up each other and not so subtly staring in the colourful glow of the neon lights. luke orders you two a pizza to share and you find yourselves sitting on the floor of the arcade, stuffing your faces and sharing a diet coke (because it’s your favourite) and somehow you end up kissing each other goodbye (tentatively and very much like the first kiss that it is).
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
nico goes all out. i can’t explain why i think so but once you say yes to a date there’s no holding him back. he takes you to a pretty well known restaurant in new york city, you've never been there so he sends you a menu and dress code ahead of time which you gladly appreciate. it’s semi-nice, jeans and a button up look great on him and the watch on his wrist only adds to it. he’s got a light hand on your lower back when he follows you and the host out onto the rooftop terrace to your table. the people you see along the way are dressed similarly to yourself and nico, there‘s suit pants and button ups and fancy dresses everywhere. you’re pleased to know he described the dress code well and you fit right in (you were slightly anxious in front of your closet a few hours before) and thanks to scouting the menu out beforehand, you know which dish you’re most interested in. you end up splitting two of them, a pasta that’s almost not a diet plan violation and a bowl that most definitely is. he also insists you pick a bottle of wine so you’re pleasantly buzzed by the time you also order a chocolate dessert to share. conversation flows nicely, always has, even when you were only texting, and his very slight accent only adds to his charm. you decide to walk home, the way not being too long (and maybe he wants to spend a little more time with you and maybe hold your hand and maybe bring you to your door and part with a kiss on the cheek, like the gentleman he is).
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
you didn’t know about the term “meet-cute” before you met mitch, but looking back that’s totally what happened with you two. you were out with your best friends dog, they had gone back home for a few days to sort out some family matter and left you in charge of their adorable goldendoodle athena for the time being. with a hot drink in your left hand and her leash wrapped around your right, you braved the cold canadian november wind to spend your free saturday at one of torontos dog parks. you were deeply engrossed into the podcast you’d been listening to through your earbuds and you walked a few steps back and forth to keep warm while keeping your eyes on athena, who was playing idly with a few dogs you met at this park regularly. after a few minutes you noticed she favoured playing with one dog more than any of the others. when you called her over after you’d been getting colder and colder and even athenas happiness didn’t seem worth this torture anymore, her favourite friend even came over to you. it trotted over a few steps behind athena, seeming almost shy as it walked slowly towards you. as you crouched down to clip athenas leash back on, a voice sounded out from the other end of the clearing the dogs had been playing on. a few minutes later you’d found yourself next to the man, who introduced himself as mitch and the adorable chocolate lab athena had been playing with as zeus. it hadn’t taken the both of you long to decide to get coffee together, both of you not wanting to separate your dogs, who kept on playfully nipping and nuzzling each other. you’d ended up exchanging phone numbers over that exact cup of coffee and would later name this your first date.

willy seems like a huge quality time guy to me, i think he’d like just being able to do his thing while you do yours. it’s how you end up because you try scheduling a date where you both find time for literal weeks but he has to manage practice and games and all sorts of media stuff and you’re busy yourself so you end up on opposite sides of his couch. your laptop on your lap, headphones in, typing away at school work or some project for your job while he takes calls and gives interviews and watches tape on the other end of the cushions, feet meeting in the middle. you indulge in some lingering looks and staring but also a game of footsies. there’s small breaks for a drink or a snack and of course a bit of chatting between the two of you and you’re surprised by how much you got done even though he can be pretty distracting if you peek over your laptop for too long (it also makes it even more rewarding when you both are able to close your laptops for the night and order some takeout for dinner and actually talk).
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
i’m convinced leon hates dating, especially first dates. i think he’d just take you out for coffee or drinks regularly without ever telling you about his intentions, mask it as friends going out together. maybe you were friends with a teammate or a wag before and he started out inviting them as well but soon it turned into just the two of you to the point where you’re creating routines. drinks after wins, coffee after losses. lunches or dinners after special occasions - a hatty or a night with many points. it takes your friend complaining about how nobody ever puts effort into dates anymore for you to realize that maybe you’ve been subconsciously dating leon draisaitl for months. you’re hesitant about it for a few days but you can’t hold yourself back one night so you ask him for a real date, drinks at your favourite bar, one that’s a little bit of a hole in the wall. you’ve discovered it a few, well, dates in and you’ve frequented it ever since, trying yourselves through the drink menu and this time you spend a night actually flirting instead of dancing around each other.

you’re up early and just getting ready for your day when you receive connors text, “so i kinda broke my jaw last night, rain check on tonight?” and you’re instantly worried. usually you’d watch the blackhawks games but you’d fallen asleep over your work last night. “what do u mean u broke ur jaw? are you okay?” it takes him a while to answer and by the time you’re on your daily commute your phone vibrates again. “in a shit ton of pain and probably needing surgery but doing okay. sorry to have to reschedule, i was really looking forward to tonight :(” it’s your lunch break when you look at your phone again and you find a message by connors sister, who was the one to initially introduce the two of you. “hey, would you mind visiting connor sometime soon? we’re not getting in until the weekend and he’s been talking about your date a lot. he’s really bummed about his jaw so could you maybe cheer him up a little?” you instantly tell her yes and as soon as you’re able to log off you pick up some soup and ice cream and anything you hope he can eat before you make your way to connors. you’ve kept up a steady stream of texting to make sure he wouldn’t be asleep and he truly does look sad when he opens the door for you. after he’s eaten the soup and the two of you have curled up on his couch with the ice cream watching greys anatomy (you find it slightly out of place but he says he likes it because it reminds him of how much worse off he could be) he looks a little more relaxed.

you’d been taking cycling classes for basically your whole college career, liking the way you could fit so much exercise into so little time, especially during your sports off season. will had seen you leave the cycling room of the gym red-faced and on shaky legs multiple times and never failed to throw you an amused smile or a light chirp. he still didn’t believe it was all that exhausting though, no matter how many times you told him about it so for your first date you insisted on taking him to his first cycling class (and treat him for a juice at your favourite cafe when he inevitably has to admit it’s fucking tiring). you had the actual time of your life, watching your oh-so-athletic-hockey-player-date sweat buckets and gasp for air on the bike next to you and he vowed to never make fun of you ever again for your classes if he could take you ice skating for your next date.

feel free to let me know if you would like reading other players / scenarios!
in my defense, i still wrote for the most part, i just felt so insecure about my writing that i couldn't post literally anything (anyone else also get especially anxious in december/january??).
alsoo my laptop broke which not only killed my motivation to write but also my ENTIRE fucking sims 4 account (can you tell i'm still pissed?) so i'm currently writing on my pc which has been having a love-hate relationship with my wifi.
anyways, i am hoping and praying that this burst of motivation i've been having is staying because lord i have soooo many ideas and my brain can not form them into words that sound good at all.
i`m also going to switch up my account's colour scheme because the red lowkey is pissing me off sooo i'm going to be blue from now on.
i hope i'll be seeing you on my upcoming posts and new aus! my requests still are open if anyone wants to see specific scenes!
it was mindless routine at this point, finishing up at the paddock, ubering back to the hotel, showering and getting ready for the afterparty. every grand prix had one and while some were wilder, like monaco or abu dhabi, montreal was quite tame.
cassy was wearing a simple pair of black suit pants paired with a black lacy top and heels when she knocked on charlotte’s hotel room door to pick her up and leave for the venue. afterparties were usually held at a walkable distance from the hotels teams and drivers were staying at, purely because most of them had to stay sober (or at least bordering on it) during the weekends celebrations beforehand - as they were working many hours and had to be on top of their game during it all.
they both had raided their hotel rooms minibars and pre gamed while getting ready, each leaving their last beverage for the walk to the venue. the party itself was honestly pretty average, montreal didn’t really have that many stars buying themselves in on the guest list so they were left with the usual people they always saw at afterparties. charlotte and cassy did manage to have a good time though, they always did at these things.
they’d find a round of shots or two, a good spot to dance and, if they were lucky, someone fun to dance with. it seemed like today cassy was in luck, maybe an hour or two had passed when a familiar head of curls caught her attention in the crowd.
cassy nudged charlotte with her elbow, nodded towards where she last saw jack, trevor and cole and waved at her friend, turning around to make her way to the crowd towards the bar. she sidled up to jack with a smirk and an empty glass in her hand, leaning her arm onto his shoulder as she grinned at cole and trevor. “would you mind if i steal this one for a second?” she giggled into the back of the hand still resting on jack when cole snorted into his drink and trevor nodded enthusiastically.
a silent question in her eyes she looked at jack, waited for him to nod his agreement as well before she set her empty glass on the bar next to him and slid her hand down his arm, intertwined her fingers with his and pulled him further into the crowd.
it took about thirty minutes of dancing - their movements ranging from wild jumping to literally grinding on each other - until jack and cassy were getting closer and closer. they had started out just moving to the music separately until a literal banger had sounded through the speakers and joining the crowd for some wild jumping and screaming had felt like the only right thing to do.
when the music had turned more sensual, though, was when things really got interesting. the tipsy buzz cassy had been feeling all night came to a peak when jacks hands first found her hips, pulling her into him slowly but firmly. her arms had found their way around his neck, one hand tangling in the messy head of curls, and that had been it; that had been the trigger.
their foreheads had met with a little too much enthusiasm, soft laughs smoothing out the awkwardness. cassy had absolutely no idea which kind of music was playing by now. all her senses were filled with a steady hum of jackjackjack, which was both scaring and impressing her. she couldn’t recall ever feeling just like this, even though she tabled that thought for when she was sober and could use all her brain capacity.
his hand tucking a stray curl of fiery red hair behind her ear brought her back to the present and grounded her back into her own body in the stuffy montreal club. she lifted her eyes to his, took in the blown pupils and the way the slight shine of sweat and hint of a blush seemed to only make him more beautiful.
“hey,” she murmured into the tiny space between their faces. “do you want to kiss as bad as i do?” a surprised giggle sounded from her lips at the adorable, enthusiastic nod that bounced jacks curls around wildly. his lips cut her off, fit themselves to hers and sent her brain into a scramble once again.
charlotte had found cole and trevor after chatting with some coworkers and was nursing her mojito while catching up with both of them, which really just meant listening to whatever their teammates had gotten up to since they’d last seen each other.
trevor had just launched into explaining jamie and his latest exploring trips around california when charlottes eyes caught on a flash of red hair in her peripheral vision. she turned around slightly to get a closer look and immediately choked on a sip of minty vodka in her throat. rendered speechless she silently whacked the back of her hand at cole and trevor, nodding towards the exit when they stopped talking.
she’d thought about many things when she introduced jack and cassy but not that they’d leave a nightclub in the middle of montreal, hand in hand with kiss-bitten lips and messy hair.
vienna is really fucking tired when she parks her car in the underground garage of their new apartment building, right by the sign that says “apt. 144”. taking a second to lean back and relax in her car seat, staring at the bland grey concrete wall in front of her. she takes a few deep breaths as she replays the past few weeks in her head.
she relives apartment hunting with connor, heads stuck together over their laptops, taking virtual tours of any sort of affordable place near the practice rink and the university, discussing layouts and balconies and how big of a kitchen a college student and a professional hockey player really would use. and, of course, arguing about whether vi would pay for her share of the rent.
it had taken weeks until they’d found this apartment, the commute to the rink and uchicagos campus nearly the same time, prettily cut rooms and a decently sized balcony included. vienna could pay her share of the rent and the gym in the complex wasn’t exactly an athlete’s dream but it was enough for a few simple weight sessions.
with another deep breath vienna cuts the engine, grabs the bags and suitcase she’s thrown in the trunk and makes her way towards the elevator and up to where their new apartment would be. after she rings the doorbell, a very smiley connor opens the door for her.
before she can even take a single step into their new home, there’s already his arms around her in a hug that feels a lot like coming home from a vacation. she hugs him back tightly, murmurs her hello into his shoulder as she closes her eyes.
when he pulls away from her, he grabs her suitcase and one of her bags and leads her into their new apartment. vienna grins at the way he’s kicked his air force off and just let them rest in their entryway, thinks about scolding him like his mother used to. he pulls her along before she can, though, leads her into the living space with the kitchen stretching along one wall.
he lets her breathe there for a second, visualize a couch and tv in one corner, a table with chemistry books scattered over the surface in another. then, when he gets impatient, he nudges her with his shoulder, nods his head towards the door on the far left. while virtually touring the house they’ve also arranged the way the rooms would be shared, so vienna knows this will be her bedroom.
connor lets her enter it first, sets her bags down by the closet while she takes it all in. imagines herself watching the sun rise from these windows in the morning and staring at the city lights at night.
it’s only when they’re cuddled up on the single mattress they have here, a few meters from the corner where they ate their pizza just before, that vienna lets herself be excited for the weeks, months, years to come. unconsciously, living with connor for college had always kind of been the plan, none of their families had ever talked about it, though. it was too risky, with nobody knowing where he would play.
so now that it’s really happening, vienna lets herself be happy, and a little overwhelmed at suddenly having it all.
anastasia had her shot perfectly lined up. wine red nails wrapped around the cue on one hand and propped up on the green table cloth on the other, chocolate coloured curls pulled up into a black claw clip messily, stormy grey eyes focused on the single striped ball left on the table.
“stas, i need you at the bar!” ava’s voice sounded through the room. “one second,” anastasia mumbled into the arm she was leaning on to aim. she held her breath, pulled her arm back and took her shot, successfully sinking the last striped ball. grinning she straightened up, gave theo, the regular who played games of pool with her sometimes, a fist bump and made her way over to where ava was pouring beers with a smile “good game, theo, i’ll see you around!”
ava blew a strand of her black hair out of her vision, nodding her head towards a group of men occupying a corner booth. “a round of tequila and beers for those guys, and if you have time sarah needs a refill. the boyfriend cheated again” anastasia nodded in understanding and started pouring the shots, placing them on a tray and carrying them along with the first beers over to the booth in the corner.
“alright, gentlemen, here you go” she smiled, settling the trays down on their table, waiting for them to start handing the drinks all the way to the guys in the back so she could take the trays back to the bar. while she waited she watched the guys in the booth, trying to figure out which kind of group they were, until her eyes stopped on one. “quinn?” she asked, tilting her head to the side.
quinn had been talking to two guys further in the booth, so he probably hadn’t seen her until now. he did look up when she called his name, though, eyebrows scrunching together before he realized who she was and relaxed his mouth into a gentle smile. “what are you doing here?” the guys who were here with him looked between them confusedly, some whispering to each other at his question.
“i work here” she grinned, “university doesn’t pay all too much” she grabbed the now empty trays again, smiling into the booth one last time before she made her way back to the bar, crossing ava on her way to deliver the last of the beers. after anastasia had brought sarah her refill (she’d become a regular when her boyfriend first cheated on her, claiming that their espresso martinis could cure any heartbreak) and listened to the kind of girl he’d sought out this time, she was meeting up at the bar with ava again.
“who’re they?” she asked when they were leaning against the counter, nursing their own drinks during a quiet minute. “who? the boys in the corner?” ava asked, sky blue eyes twinkling with amusement. “yeah, one of them’s my neighbour” ava set her glass down, a look of pure astonishment on her face when she turned towards anastasia with wide eyes. “yeah, quinn just moved in across from me in like, march?”
“dude, are you serious? i thought you said you grew up in vancouver! those are the canucks, they come here after most home games. i think their owner also owned this bar at some point?” anastasia took another sip of her mocktail, they weren’t allowed to have alcohol during their shifts, before she answered. “i grew up on soccer, though. like i knew we had a hockey team but i have no clue about hockey at all”
ava shook her head with a laugh, swirling the lemon in her water around with her straw. “you’re so cute.” anastasia rolled her eyes, downed the rest of her drink and then made her way over to where sarah was waving for another espresso martini. when she’d delivered it and just made her way back to the bar she was greeted with quinn leaning on the bar in front of her with a timid smile.
“oh, hey” she nodded before she set sarah’s empty glass in the dishwasher and fully turned towards quinn. “what can i get started for you?” quinn smiled, nodding at ava quickly, who was moving around the bar behind anastasia, “surprise me?”
anastasia raised an eyebrow, “surprise you?” quinn nodded, smile on his face turning shy while stas’ eyes flicked towards his booth. “only you or something for all your friends?” her hands were already reaching out for different bottles and her favourite glass to serve a cocktail in.
“just for me, please. you can put in on their tab, though” her eyes met his across the bar, a mischievious smile pulling on her lips. “you got it, quinn” he quietly watched her from his spot, the way she reached for ingredients, poured the mixture in and out of shakers and the way the messy strands that had fallen out of her clip bounced when she mixed his cocktail.
he got a little lost in watching her work while quietly singing along to the music playing in the small bar, fascinated by how easily anastasia and ava were able move around each other behind the bar. he’s just started analyzing the way brock and thatcher have been trying to flirt with a girl in the booth next to theirs when a class clinked onto the bar in front of him quietly.
immediately his eyebrows raised and anastasia watched amusedly while his eyes flickered between her and the glass on the counter. “okay” he cleared his throat, “what exactly is that?” she grinned at him while redoing her claw clip. “that is a DTLA. congrats on your win” leaning back onto the counter she watched as quinn took a sip of her drink, nodded to himself and then shook his head at her with a smile, “thanks, stas. it’s really good” and made his way back to the booth, drink firmly in hand.
looking back, connor couldn’t even really recall actually meeting vienna. their moms confirmed it was september 2009 at the playground not far from both their houses, both of them were four years old, but he couldn’t remember exactly how it went.
he thinks she was probably playing soccer because that’s really all she did back then, before she found more friends and before she spent most of her spare time with him. anastasia and noah probably were close by as well, the two only six and nine themselves. the summers-siblings were never far apart when they were younger.
vienna was probably wearing french braids, it was the hairstyle that came to mind first whenever he thought about her, because she loved them. so much that connor had begged her older sister to teach him so he could help braid her hair for her.
maybe there were little bows at the ends, he’d seen many pictures of her when she was young, bows in nearly every hairstyle she wore.
his mom never passed up an opportunity to tell the story about the way he’d came home grinning ear to ear and happily telling everyone who would listen about the girl he played with today. whenever someone would tell the story now, there’d be a pretty pink blush on connors cheeks.
it was pretty telling how infatuated he was with her from the very first second. he hadn’t known he was in love with her for a long time, that’s just something you don’t know at four years old. he did know even back then, though, that he loved spending time with vienna. wanted to be around her and spend time with her all the time.
for a few years they only saw each other during their spare time, spending afternoons and weekends together at the playground or roaming the streets of northern vancouver. they did start attending the same middle school, though, and it sparked a series of studying together and sitting next to each other on bus rides.
it did also start the tradition of staying up together and stargazing. the first time it happened was more or less an accident, vienna had been sitting on the roof of their house, right in front of her bedroom window. it was her favourite place to sit and just think or read or listen to music, she would even study there sometimes but the more books she needed the less it happened.
her mom had asked her about if connor told her what he wanted to do with his hockey, if she knew whether he wanted to move somewhere else to continue to pursue it. it was an innocent question, really. just her mom wanting to know what he’d want to do with his future. it sent vienna for a spiral, though. was he going to move away from vancouver? she was so used to seeing him every day that even summer was hard, when her family would travel europe and his would stay in canada.
he’d come by to hang out but saw her on the roof and redirected from the front door to climbing up the banister and sitting down next to her. they’d talked about what he would do and how they would deal with it until it was dark out and they’d continue to sit and stare up at the stars.
last saturday’s party had been one for the books. celeste and her roommates, avery, liz and mary, had planned for the party of the semester, maybe even of the academic year. their whole friday and saturday had consisted of decorating, buying and cooling drinks and partyproofing their beloved dorm.
the party itself had been absolutely unforgettable. nearly the whole athletics department had showed up. the women’s teams did usually hang out anyways and the four girls had been going out with the football team for years. after their triumph in the women’s vs men’s match nearly the whole hockey team had also decided to show up and so their dorm had been slightly on the wrong side of crowded with the amount of people.
liz was responsible for the music, she had been teaching herself how to dj for years now. she played sets at all their parties and she’d gotten really good at it. there was loads of dancing and loads of shots and thanks to their teammates the cleanup had been quick and easy.
the unspoken highlight was the beer pong match though. they had set their table up in the middle of the dorm and chosen teams first thing. to absolutely no one’s surprise celeste and avery had played against ethan and mark - dream team against dream team. it didn’t take too long though, they had agreed to play a best of three and celeste and avery had won within two clean games, each time clearing their cups while ethan and mark had more than three left on their side.
which lead to celeste starting her next saturday morning very, very calmly. she’d let herself sleep for a little longer than usual before she’d taken an 8:00 am workout class and then gotten ready with music and a coffee. by 10:30 she’d finished a sketch of a dress that she’d been hung up on for months and was just now starting to hem a pair of jeans for a girl on her team.
she could hear her roommates through the open door, mary woke up deathly hungover and had been living on the couch all morning, intermittently napping and nibbling on a slice of toast. the sizzling pan on the stove was taken care of by avery, who had been wanting to try a new recipe for lunch and currently alternated between stirring the contents of her newest creation and retelling the hottest bits of gossip to her childhood friend who lived in a sorority across campus.
liz was still asleep, she’d once again played her set at a party the day before, slowly but surely making a name for herself on campus. celeste had heard her stumble into their dorm somewhere around 6am and her soft snores still sounded out into their living area.
their plans for today were simple: survive a new avery-smith-recipe and, after afternoon practice, drive to detroit for a bit of shopping and maybe some literal pre-game-drinks, if mary would be back amongst the living by then, before they’d make their way to the red wings game. liz was born and raised in detroit and her dad had been a season ticket holder for years, he frequently organised tickets for the four of them if they asked.
she had felt bad for a second, had seen the men’s hockey instagram account posting snapshots of very tired looking guys this morning when 7 am practice had made them roll out of bed way too early. she was soon reminded of her own hatred against saturday morning practices and had decided that one semester of early wake ups wouldn’t kill ethan, or any of them, surely.
i might edit ally a little bit because she's the first of my girls that i ever came up with and she's a little all over the place but i'm sure i'll write for them again. feel free to send me any ideas if you're thinking of something specific!
i sure am! motivation to write is always low for me in summer (especially for hockey boys) so i took some time away from actually writing but i had a whole lot of new ideas so i'm really excited to get back into it :D

will’s in the locker room after practice when he thinks about it for the first time. they’re talking about cutter, how he’ll probably be signed after the championship game. where all the other boys will go, that they think they’ll be signed by the end of the next season or the one after that.
ally breezes through the hallway by the open door (they promise her to not keep it open while anyone is indecent and usually it’s closed until after they’ve been showered and are shirtless at most) and it spikes a thought. one he hadn’t even considered, used to being a couple steps ahead on the ice but keeping his mind in the present off of it.
he’ll leave boston. for san jose. probably before his college time would be over if he simply got his degree. he’s a fourth overall pick, there’s people waiting to see him on the ice for the sharks, people that would rather him score for their nhl team then have him finish college.
but leaving boston would mean leaving home. leaving ally. he doesn’t know if he simply pushed that thought to the back of his mind or if it hadn’t crossed his mind at all. the worst thing about it is that he doesn’t know when. maybe they had meetings about it, have decided to give him a call after the championship game if he wins, that they won’t if he doesn’t. or they still might, win or lose.
maybe he’ll be back in boston, snuggled up in their corner of the library with ally. maybe he’ll be in minnesota still, barely back in the hotel room after a devastating loss or raging celebrations. he has to look up the time zones, actually, maybe that wouldn’t even be possible. his mind is going there regardless, though.
in fact, his thoughts are running a mile an hour. what if-questions are kind of always on his mind, inevitable with hockey really. what if i’d realized his play a second earlier? what if i passed to my right instead of my left? what if i shot a fraction of a millisecond earlier, would the goalie still have saved it?
what if ally leaves him when he has to go to san jose? what if she dumps him the second he tells her? what if she doesn’t, tortures both of them with long distance for a few weeks before she breaks up with him over text? what if she agrees to it, loves him over miles and time zones and then falls in love with some other blond, blue-eyed hockey player in boston and forgets about will?
the what-ifs torture him, constantly and for days. he can’t quite bear talking to anyone about them, feeling stupid one second and like they’ll confirm his fears right after. gabe and ryan try to get through to him multiple times, cutter tries to talk to him as well. even eamon starts an attempt of a conversation. he blows all of them off.
the only person he might want to talk to is the one who doesn’t pressure him. there were multiple instances over the months they’ve been together when will got into his own head, about hockey, about school, pretty much anything. ally doesn’t urge him to talk, doesn’t try to solve problems for him unless he comes to her with them. she takes care of him, quietly, and just like she normally would, and waits him out until he’s ready to talk.
she’s making sure he eats, hydrates, secures his sleep by scratching his back or caressing his skin or burying her hand in his curls. massaging the sore spots after games and applying balms on bruises, kissing him when he plays well and holding him when he doesn’t and she knows he beats himself up for it.
ally just knows he wants to talk to her when she settles into his passenger seat one monday, somehow she feels it in her bones. his right hand may find its place on her thigh, like it always does, but he’s tapping his fingers down on it like he does when he’s nervous. it only stops when she slips her own hand into his, entangles their fingers and slowly drags her thumb over his knuckles.
after she presses a soft peck to his lips and another to his cheek she keeps her eyes trained on their hands, painting shapes and letters onto his skin and playing with the bracelets on his wrist. it’s become a habit, a thing, if you will. love letters and secret messages traced into skin, trails of conversations and silent reassurances traded wordlessly and blindly.
she uses just this to hopefully make will feel less anxious as they’re in the car, tells him i love yous and little hearts through her touch until they’re at his chosen destination. he parks the car at the rink on campus and she goes with him without protest, lets him lead her center ice and follows him when he lays down on it.
they stay there unmoving except for ally slipping her hand back into wills, breath leaving their mouths in small clouds as they’re staring up to the ceiling. ally’s glad to have chosen a hoodie when she left the house in the morning, thinks she might be able to better fight off the cold for as long as will needs. he squeezes her hand once before he starts speaking, a shaky breath before his voice sounds through the empty rink.
“i was drafted to san jose.” ally briefly closed her eyes, having feared this talk would come at some point. after taking a deep breath she squeezes wills hand, silently telling him to continue. “i don’t know when they’ll want me to sign with them but, like- i guess i just want you to know i won’t say no to them. if they do want me.” her green eyes shoot open, head turning to her left to find wills face. “what?” she sounds breathless, scrambling to sit up and turn his head towards her with the hand that’s not in his.
“you think i’d want you to stay here? instead of playing in the nhl?” before will can even nod or talk or do anything, really, she continues. “will, i wouldn’t hold you back. not from achieving your dreams.” her voice breaks slightly somewhere between hold and back and his body acts before his brain catches up when he sits up and wraps her up into his free arm. “that’s not what i’m saying, gorgeous.” he whispers, lips brushing her ear. “i just-, i might, probably, not be around for graduation. or maybe a year before that.”
ally pulls back slightly, leaning her forehead on his and squeezing his hand once more. “i know.” will keeps quiet for a second, the only thing there is to hear is their synchronised breathing. ally thinks they must be a poetic picture, really. center ice in an empty rink, barely enough lights on to find the way to the ice and back. two teenagers all tangled up, foreheads touching, a hand intertwined and wrapped up in the other, breathing in sync and thoughts racing.
“i just need to know how this- how we’ll work. if you’d be up to trying long distance or like, what your plans are.” will continues, his words somewhere between a whisper and a breath. “hey” she murmures gently. “ever thought about what happens if all i need is you?” his eyes shoot open in surprise, clearly having waited for rejection, to be let down gently.
“san jose has a school for criminology, they have a pretty good grad school program for criminal psychology.” she smiles softly at the way his eyes widen. “plus, i only have two more years here” her warm hand squeezes his once more before she breathes deeply, hiding her face into his shoulder after a moment, not only to mask her expression but also the tears forming in her eyes. after she feels a kiss pressed into her hair she lifts her head again.
“i thought you were going to tell me you had to break up with me because they signed you and you didn’t want me to hold you back” her voice is shaky like he’s never heard it and her words make him pull her into his arms fully, fingers detangling and wrapping around her waist instead. with her face pressed into the crook of his neck, he nuzzles his nose into her hair and kisses the top of her head before speaking hoarsely.
“i thought you were going to break up with me because you didn’t want to do long distance” he’s concerned when her shoulders start shaking, thinks she has to be crying but after a second he realizes she’s in fact giggling into his skin. will hesitates for a few more breaths before he, too, can’t hold back the laugh building in his chest, breathing all his anxieties out with it. “i love you, you know” she mumbles into his lips when she’s lifted her head before pressing a lingering kiss to them. “i do know, you looked up schools in san jose for me” he grins.
