Disney Lorcana’s latest Wendy image is giving 2003 Rachel Hurdwood “Red-Handed Jill” vibes and I am HERE for it!
James would sound like a mom at her daughters kindergarten graduation like “that’s my little girl all grown up and ready to go keelhaul her first victim… my precious little darling angel 🥹” and then pulls 500 billion photos of her out of his wallet like a fucking dad
50 shades of captain hook
The way Hook is voice acted and animated form the 1953 film is like, the only time that he feels like an adult to me. In the second film, and in subsequent Disney animated depictions, he sounds and feels like a child in a man-shaped suit. Like—
This is a full grown adult man with a PROMINENT Nicotine addiction. Smokes way too much. Drinks a little *too* much. Has been divorced three times. Says really vulgar things in different languages so nobody knows what he’s actually saying. Has an illegitimate child somewhere, probably.
Wearing a propeller hat and holding a comically large lollipop. Does anyone agree.
Okay, see, I’ve talked about this with a friend before and while, yes, I know realistically speaking the difference is due to different voice actors and Disney’s interpretation of the character shifting over time…hear me out…in-world, it’s because Hook’s mental health is in major decline and he’s THIS 🤏🏻 close to just bottoming out in a major depressive episode. It’s no secret any/all versions of Hook have mental health problems (anxiety, PTSD, depression, etc.) and Disney themself has pretty much made this canon in stuff like Jake-verse and short-stories. So yeah, in the first film, Hook is more “serious” because he still hasn’t fully given up yet. By the time we reach the sequel, he’s desperate. He’s figured out how to leave the island but realized there’s nothing out there for him to go back to. He’s finally managed to evade the crocodile…but then suddenly there’s another creature after him. So of course he’s gonna be a little bit manic, a little bit more extreme in his reactions, a little less like he has a grip on reality. He’s just…done.
I feel like it’s just the big mouse company not wanting to make him be quite that reserved again, because they’ve sort of cultivated their own silly ass character out of him. The original isn’t an adult film by any means, he doesn’t do anything all that outrageous, but I lament that he ain’t allowed to act like shit anymore. Like, the little comment of “a jealous female can be tricked into anything!” like that feels like bitter-ass thrice divorced man energy. And what I already mentioned— which was the frankly humorous levels of smoking. Bitch, WHY is he smoking TWO cigars at once.
Get this bitch a pack of pall mall menthol 100s, STAT. THAT OR A NICOTINE PATCH BECAUSE THIS IS THE GLUTTONY THEY SPOKE OF IN THE BIBLE.

I’m so eternally salty about it, because the 53’ iteration felt like he had such unexpected teeth to him. That character felt like a jaded, bitter adult. He feels like he’s in his forties, and MAD as fuck that he has to be stuck in this island with children, forever. The way he’s voice acted and animated makes him feel like a real adult that does adult things in his spare time. Hans Conroe did a very good job making him seem like a mature (he’s still extremely childish, but I digress) guy when he needed to be. And then you get to any other animated depiction of this character, and Disney has taken away ANY vestiges of tooth and nail that could’ve gone into him.
Basically my ideal version of animated hook should be reminiscent of team fortress 2 spy.

I think it would be neat if Antonio Banderas gave a voice to some iteration of Captain Hook, but I also think Disney is way too scared of giving hook that kind of sex appeal so that daydream is sunk, lmao
I know this is strictly a hook blog but would anyone like to proofread a bit of a lion king fic I have written 👉👈 it's scar focused 😍
So I watched puss in Boots the last wish about an hour ago and uh. I have a game theory
Hook is a canon character in the Shrek universe, i.e. him being the piano player/singer at the Poisoned Apple in Shrek 2, so I have to assume that this is likely him coming to Puss's big celebratory party at the start of the film. (And aw if that's true isn't it so cute that he chooses to give a puss a step on his hook like aww) I mean it COULD be some other person that conveniently has a hook for a hand, but I can dream. Also,
Either Jack Horner fucking killed him or he just stole James's prosthetic right off of his hand lmao
Hook rly is just eternally stuck in his flop era huh
"Silver Minnow? Gilded Rose? Uh, Glory Aurora?" She rapid fires the names, though in truth she'd thought about this particular topic for a long time coming.
He crinkles his nose, "Glory Aurora is a good one. The other two..." He mutters to himself, "a general rule? Do not try to name a vessel anything that's going to sound too... What's a good word for it..."
"Awesome?" Wendy suggests.
He nods once, "Yes. If you're trying to name a ship something," he raises both his hand and hook, forming a half air quote. Wendy giggles at this. "Awesome," he scowls at her giggling, "or too overt, then going for something hard-hearted is just going to sound dumb coming out of your mouth at the nearest port."
There's a pause. "But you like Glory Aurora?" The little girl asks deftly, eyes sparkling with wonder at her success.
The captain sighs, defeated. "Yes."

[text ID: If I could drown in sleep as I drown in fear I would be no longer alive.]
Just a reminder. Hook is on Neverland of his own free will, hunting a child. Hook made a poisonous cake to kill children. Hook wanted to kill the boys and take the girl. I am highly sure Hook wanted something else from Wendy. 2003 Peter Pan was not afraid to show that.
When he lost his cool Infront of children, he wanted to whip the skin off of them. Then drown them.
Hook is a villain.
I’ve already commented on this from my main blog but wanted to come back to it more thoroughly and address a few things here.
Let me start out by saying that as much as I adore Hook as a character, I have no qualms with recognizing that he is a villain. Hook canonically kills his own men in several versions of the story, and it’s pretty obvious that he is willing to kill not only Pan but other children who might get in the way of that goal. That said, however, I do take issue with two points: (1) That Hook is on the island of his own free will. (He may or may not be.) and (2) His intentions toward Wendy.
NOTE:For the purposes of this argument I’m going to assume you’re referring to Barrie’s text as canon.
With regard to the first point, Barrie tells us very little about how Hook might have come to the island or why. Did he sail there intentionally? If so, could he sail away? Maybe… While it’s true that Barrie never actually says Neverland is a star, we also really only see people come and go from the island via flying, and I think it’s safe to say that Hook didn’t fly in. To be fair, though, Hook does say the crocodile has followed him, “from sea to sea and land to land,” which would imply that he can leave. Even so, I’m not sure Hook would willingly stick around and put up with Peter’s pestering all the time if he had the option of leaving and never looking back. Revenge probably isn’t worth it when he could be out plundering other ships and doing better things than fighting a boy who will gladly kill off his men just because he thinks it’s fun. We also don’t know how long Hook has been on the island. The Golden Age of Piracy has long since passed by the time the Darlings arrive. If he was truly “Blackbeard’s bosun” (implying he came from the “real” world that Wendy comes from) and “the only man the Sea Cook feared” then he has been on the island for a couple hundred years. Maybe he could leave once…but I’m not sure he has been able to for awhile. Or perhaps Hook himself is one of Peter’s creations or the dream of one of the Darlings or some other child come to life. Barrie is intentionally vague about a lot of these things, so it’s difficult to definitively argue one way or another.
The second point, I feel more strongly about. Hook is many things, but I don’t believe a pedophile is one of them. We honestly have no idea what Hook’s sexuality is like because Barrie doesn’t give us anything to go on in his book. (If you count “Hook at Eton” as part of Barrie’s canon we do learn that Hook was not attached to any woman but nothing else about his love life/sexuality or lack thereof.) Hook does use his charm to his advantage with her, perhaps, but no more than he would with anyone else, I think. The idea of taking Wendy captive as a “mother” for the pirates isn’t even Hook’s idea. Smee (who is probably about as innocent as a pirate can be) is the one who initially proposes it, and Hook just agrees that he likes the plan and expands upon it. As ridiculous as it sounds, I don’t think there is any hidden meaning behind it. They literally DO just want a “mother.” Lots of things on the island are what we might think of as being ridiculous: a clock so loud it can be heard from (and still function) inside of a crocodile, a kite that can lift a child into the air, imaginary food that somehow actually provides sustenance… Why does Barrie’s story feature such ridiculous plot points? Because they are meant to be things that a child would come up with. Hook’s attempt to kidnap Wendy and make her the pirates’ mother, therefore, makes more sense in this context. There is a lot of “play acting” going on in this story and, to a certain extent at least, the pirates are obligated to do so as well, being a part of a child’s dreamland and subject to the rules of a child’s mind. Death is something most children don’t quite understand but have some vague concept of. (“To die will be an awfully big adventure.”) Rape, however, for most children raised in a safe environment, never crosses their minds, and I truly don’t believe Barrie ever intended to make his audience think about it either.
@concordia-cum-sinistro has done a lot more textual research than I have and could probably explain these points more eloquently than I can, but these are my basic thoughts on the matter.
To me, hook would never think to actually do something like that to Wendy, or anyone else for that matter. I think what makes him "not wholly unheroic" is that he actually DOES have morals, he has good qualities to him. Namely in that he's a gentleman, or at least tries very hard to be. I don't think Hook preys after women or girls of any age, it just doesn't slot into his character for me. Is he charming when he finds the motivation to be? Of course. But at his best, he is a gentleman, and not only is he a gentleman, but even without the veneer of one, he's just not the type to do anything that evil or extreme. At a baseline, at the very center of his character, I think he'd be highly opposed to doing anything like that to anybody.
Also, why would he even do that or feel any particular need to do that? The idea of Hook escalating to full on assaulting Wendy doesn't even feel like it's the same character anymore. It's just glueing together the worst possible thing a person can do, pasting it onto James, and saying 'well he's the bad guy so of course he'd do something like this because he's evil' even if it doesn't make sense

ngl the whole wendy/hook thing implied in the 2003 film is.. uh.. not great!
It gives me such ick, like girl, I know James would not get that close to her I know he wouldn't like come ON let's be real.
Cannot tell you how sick I am of people writing Peter Pan-inspired YA novels that make Peter the villain or Neverland some dark wasteland where creepy murderous/sexual things happen. Stop it. Peter's just a little boy who doesn't want to grow up. Wendy is a child who does not need to be turned into the next bland feminist icon. Hook is not the hero no matter how much you thirst. Neverland is not Peter's demonic sex house. It's just an island with magic and pirates and Indians. Stop it. You're not cool. It didn't need improving. You're not original. This is the fantasy author's equivalent of a Hot Topic emo phase. Be embarrassed. Leave Peter Pan alone.
Honestly I think in retellings it should be an equal mix of both as far as darkness, I think if anyone should shoot for a "dark fairytale" inspired re write it should be in the same vein as something like maybe Pans Labyrinth
Also I have complicated feelings about how fans tend to characterize hook
Does anyone have any references for the English lexicon in the 1600-1700s, because while I can read something from that time and have an idea of what people sounded like in day to day speech, I feel like there's a big difference between writing and speaking style
