A portrait of Maison Magdalene, the Parisian pension of Marianne Livry
Opened during the bohemian period of Moulin Rouge at the end of 19th century when Haussmann's renovation of Paris breathed new life into the city streets, Maison Magdalene offered a warm bed to those at the margins of society.
Situated between the 17th and 18th arrondissement in a veiled alleyway and named after the saint Mary Magdalene and a local prostitute, the keeper of Maison Magdalene kept the business by herself, yet remained anonymous and intimate exclusively towards her favored guests.
Marianne Loveta Livry, a dear friend of the keeper, adopted ownership during World War I. The cause of such decision remained unknown. Marianne retained the former owner's practices while building upon the existing foundation, effectively growing Maison's business while shrouding its purpose beneath a commercial façade amid expanding society and bohemia.
Over the years, Maison Magdalene has seen countless deviations and incidents occurring within its rooms. Rotating guests, reverbing zeitgeists and shifting cultures wrote countless stories including different guests, the government officials and Marianne Livry herself.
My posts will document these stories with illustrations to bring them to life: the good, the bad, and the erotic. Mature posts will be marked accordingly and minors are forbidden from interacting with this blog. Thank you.
My darling Marianne.
11. XI 1922.
As I'd anticipated, convincing Inge to model for me proved to have been nevertheless challenging. A combat medic for the Alliance, previously a nurse, as I've heard. War-torn, ragged to pieces and put back together. One cannot fathom the stories beneath countless lesions and defacements. She would not tell me, and I am infatuated.
