july's Hater Newsletter is dedicated to board games. out of the dozens of board games i have played over the past year and a half there are only a few that i would say i actually disliked playing, and i only played them once or twice so my complaints are not fully comprehensive. anyway here they are:
Betrayal at House on the Hill is the one on this list you are most likely to know about, as it is published by wizards of the coast. this feels like less a board game and more of an excuse for roleplaying scenarios, the idea is that in the first phase of the game you build the house (board) and the second is that one of 50 or so scenarios is selected, each having unique teams and rules.
this results in stopping 1/3 the way of the game to explain new rules to everybody for 10 minutes and then playing through the scenario that is most likely to be horribly unbalanced in one side's favor, or because your house layout doesn't work for it at all. again i am not an impromptu roleplayer and the people i play with don't seem to be either so it is really not good for anyone involved
Steampunk Rally already does not sound good from the name, not that i have anything against steampunk settings but when they explicity call themselves that it's not a great omen. i actually like the style of the game and you play as cartoon versions of famous 19th century inventors which is kind of neat, but the mechanic of building your contraption larger every turn and having to load it with stuff makes for a game where turns get way too long and convoluted the further it goes on. at least the wright brothers are there
The Oracle of Delphi is an ancient greek themed game that might not actually be that bad rule wise but most of my dislike for it comes from how the board is arranged:
this is perhaps the least helpful player mat i have ever seen. i guess they really didn't want to use words but they really should have. my memory of this game is already slipping so i couldn't even tell you much about the mechanics but i think you get cards that have quests on them and you have to complete them all by sailing around and then you win when you return to zeus in the middle. everyone in the group was very bored by the end.
Dark Pact is what made me think FUCK PURE DECKBUILDERS!!!!!! maybe not all of them but there is something to games about only deckbuilding that make turns take so fucking long the further you get in. i think some TCGs have this problem but normal card games do it too. average late game turn of dark pact is like "i can use evil pussy to gain 3 more actions which triggers a penis effect that allows me to get 3 more draws which i can use to get asshole points" but then the card drawn doesn't allow asshole points in this situation so then the player has to sit there and think of another strategy that doesn't involve asshole points. i guess what i was saying is that i don't like when turns take too long, like this post that i'm ending right now

Played some carnivore today, its a cute game, excited to paint up all the models
Needed to get some painted up asap. Doing a sponge for the base patterns to keep them looking more natural. Might do small area touch ups with a brush then doing a wash. Very outside my normal process and color palette, its refreshing.

An old photo was discovered in non-Project archival records. It appears to be an aberrant form of Prince in an area yet to be discovered by staff. The photo's visual noise denotes the presence of ionizing radiation.
