I’m back for buddie analysis!!!!

Ok let’s start with the light stuff…

The macaroons having feet…the family dinner…the vibe….guys…..thats gay as hell. It’s really interesting that this season they have gone all in on Buck and Eddie’s profound bond…this is the second episode in a row where they barely interract with anyone else. buddie is no longer something that gets thrown in to an occasional episode. It’s their plots.

Eddie’s plot line this season is wanting to settle down and worrying too much about Buck. Oh and avoiding dates with women like the plague. And leading too much with his heart. Just FYI.

Also Buck and Eddie r very explicitly a family unit now which is also exciting and was not the case before season 7 I would say. Increasingly we are seeing Buck and Eddie act as a family unit, and have had characters start pointing out their unusual closeness. Importantly fanfic was already here. Fanfic had been making buddie a family unit since forever, and since season 2 in canon ppl have mistaken them for a gay people. I think this again is bridging the gap in canon between how the fans portray Buck and Eddie and how they are in the show, specifically in order to make them more romantically compatible. I think they were before which is why ppl ship them, but their priorities and paths need to align first, and the last two seasons have been paving the way for this. Eddie had the whole arc of being able to love himself, and believing in his ability to be a good father. Now he’s more secure, he knows what he wants: a family for him and for Chris. He is no longer searching for a mother, someone to replace Shannon, he is looking to carve something for himself that he also gets to enjoy. By showing Buck and Eddie interact as a family unit, 9-1-1 is showing us that Eddie does have this! For him, the gap is not in understanding that him and Buck are a natural fit, the thing he needs to figure out is that he’s gay. Having buck end up in a really bad place emotionally and in his life will push Eddie to the extreme of his feelings for Buck. It will bring into focus how much he cares about Buck and that will push him to realise that he is in fact gay for Buck. In my opinion. Potentially. Allegedly.

As for Buck. He’s been not doing good since Bobby’s death and I like this plot line as well. We saw in season 8 him react really poorly to feeling abandoned by Eddie, and it follows for his character that he is deeply hurt that Bobby is gone too. And he literally left him there to die! Plus he has this whole kidnapping thing going on for him as well. No wonder he has turned to substance abuse he’s having a shit time. His care for Eddie has turned self sacrificing. He no longer wants to confide in him, he’s pulling away. Buck hasn’t had a serious arc in a while and it’s honestly refreshing to see him suffer instead of someone else. (Free Hen. please let her be happy for fucks sake.) So I think it’s nice to first of all let Oliver stark do some acting and also to put Buck thru the ringer as it makes sense for him to be sad and he’s due not being the comic relief for a bit.

Basically, while this may seem like a step away from a romantic ending for them, I really don’t think it is. I think all of the dominoes are being set up to fall. Season finale we will get something concrete. feelings confirmation of some kind. we will know that season 10 will be buddie season. we have like 4 episodes for them to develop this plot further and it’s the end of the season so you know plot will happen.

I’m sort of all in on this theory because what the hell else could possibly be going on. If this is queerbait it is by far the queerest of baits to have ever been baited. Would 100% surpass supernatural on levels of evil. It would totally kill the fanbase and excitement for the show! They are actively setting up for longevity by giving may, harry and Ravi more screen time. Buck and Eddie are the natural replacement for the Athena/bobby romantic dynamic!! it would just be really really weird if buddie didn’t happen now. It would be terrible writing. Worse than is standard for 911. It’s gonna happen guys.

as a long standing buddie truther let’s dissect this episode shall we.

First of all, we have fully started getting the fanfic trope of Buck and Eddie acting so much like a couple that people assume they are a couple. And neither of them are correcting anyone. This I think is getting the audience used to the idea of them as a romantic pairing for those who are not already reading them that way.

Second of all, this whole episode was reinforcing how much Buck and Eddie are about each other, and how close they are. We see them BOTH go to extreme lengths to make sure the other is ok. They are each others first thought upon waking up battered and bruised. Buck is ready to sacrifice himself for Eddie’s son. Eddie jumped out of a window, rode a horse and held a woman at gunpoint DAYS AFTER A CAR CRASH for Buck. Compare this to the supernatural days where Cas and Dean sometimes loved each other loads, and sometimes Dean would just act terribly towards Cas for no reason, beating back the shipping and the importance of their relationship. NONE OF THIS BABE. DEDICATED EPISODE WHERE THEY ARE PUT IN DANGER SPECIFICALLY TO SHOW US HOW MUCH THEY CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER.

(A side note to that, this is a Boys Love storyline…this is straight out of fanfic, straight out of yaoi guys. All of the conflict was specifically there to push the boys closer together, closer to a romantic conclusion. 9-1-1 uses disasters as a way to highlight the importance of people to each other a lot. We can take the Eddie getting shot bit as well as a comparison. There they also reinforced their bond as a result of a disaster.)

I would also like to bring up Eddie’s very intense reaction to being homophobically hate crimed. Obviously it’s not cool to do this, but if u compare bucks reaction to Eddie’s I think smth important is revealed. Buck as an established queer thought more rationally in the situation and tried to leave it. Eddie had a blind emotional response. This is the second time recently his emotions have just exploded to protect Buck. The first was in the firefighter olymics. These choices are VERYYY purposeful and I think are showing Eddie’s repression of his sexuality coming to the surface. He also hasn’t dated women at all this season and has gone to great lengths to avoid doing this, which I also think is a sign.

Oh yeah and carry on my wayward son needle drop. I mean COME ON. We ALL know what we associate with that song. In the language of shipping, subtext and subtle winks at the audience, this is definitely something. 9-1-1 has been both setting up plot lines and aligning the text with the context of Buck and Eddie being gay, and is also using queer signalling/subtext to reinforce buddie canon for those with eyes that see…so many buddie stans r destiel veterans. THEY ARE TELLING US THAT WE ARE RIGHT

everything can come back to BL bc I said so but like the “queer gaze” 9-1-1 is employing of very subtly starting to imply buck and Eddie’s budding romance literally since season 7 is v similar to the cinematic language of BL shows….like we as the audience, bc we r a queer baited fanfiction reading audience, know what to look for. I think a regular audience member might at this point start to suspect something, but we as loyal crumb followers have put all of the pieces together already. we can see that they r both being kept very deliberately single, we can see that there’s subtext under their motivations in this episode.

I like the theme of this episode of evolution. I think this season has been all about evolution in general, because the show has evolved past Bobby and is introducing new characters and storylines. here they r punctuating the ways in which everyone has changed since we met them. Buck wants to settle down! wild! Eddie has learned to trust his instincts as a father. he believes in himself and leads from a place of love now.

this perfectly sets them up for a romantic storyline. Eddie finally being able to trust his gut I think is a sign of him in the future needing to trust his gut with something else. Buck wanting to settle down, being put off by Eddie’s reaction, running to his side whenever he needs. he effectively already is Eddie’s “person” in that way, they just haven’t noticed it yet.

Eddie raising his heckles over the bidding war AGAIN as well was crazy…several lingering shots of him looked pissed off….no one else is upset, everyone is cheering buck on. It’s similar to when Eddie was leaving and Buck was the only one freaking out. the show keeps telling us that they do not respond to each other like friends do.

all of these crumbs that we so easily piece together are quite small and easy to miss. to again compare 911 to greys, the George and Izzy romance was set up two seasons in advance, in little moments. it’s a classic slow burn that creeps up on you. We r definitely onto something. it’s happening.

to recap. eddie's intense indignation at people getting into a bidding war over buck. eddie IMMEDIATELY calling buck when chris goes missing. buck maintaining his right to be angry at abigail for taking chris just as much as eddie. eddie immediately shutting down any mention of him and alex being a thing. buck rushing to the hospital for eddie. buck calling eddie sexy and eddie acting like buck just shot him by doing so. eddie paying maddie to make sure he doesn't have to go on a date with a woman. the shot lingering on eddie's face when buck goes on stage and talks about being a new man who's ready to settle down. which could mean nothing.

Idk we aren’t getting any interiority from Eddie, barely any from Buck as well. I wld have taken one (1) ONE single shot of Eddie looking a bit sad or uncomfortable that this was all happening but that was just NOT THERE AT ALL!!!!

Like it’s cool and all to have a bisexual hook up montage it was fun and I love modern tv bc we get sexy men doing bisexual hook up montages that’s awesome.

Idk I guess maybe it can be argued that Buck turning them down and saying “I’m still figuring out how to be a half” is sort of a hint at him being in some kind of crisis about his life goals and relationships, but again, most of the focus was on haha look at these weird poly people.

In Russian, loving someone and being in love with someone are two different words

«Я люблю тебя» means I love you

«Я влюблён в тебя» means I am IN love with you (or the direct translation is more like Im in lovee in you kind of??)

A bit like the te amo/ te quiero distinction in Spanish (thank u Skam españa for this tit bit of knowledge)

Russian speakers sound off wld it not have been better if he said «я в тебя так влюблен, даже не знаю что с этим делать» (I am so in love with you, I don’t even know what to do with it) or even «я в тебя так влюблен, я не знаю куда это деть» (I am so in love with you, I don’t know where to put it all)

I’m acc nitpicking like crazy, but the Russian speech was soooo off. When he’s talking about paying for things, he describes food as being “on the level” which just is not at all said ever at all.

but I digress it doesn’t matter that much, it’s a miracle Connor storie’s Russian is good enough that I often don’t need to read the subtitles to understand what he’s saying.
