Happy Thanksgiving !!
“Bobby [Guy] played golf with Gordon MacRae, James Garner, & George Gobel...Gordie...recorded a song I wrote with Ruthie Bivona...We were having dinner at our house with Gordon and Sheila MacRae, George and Alice Gobel, and Perry and Ginny Botkin.
“Gordie said, ‘We’re going to record next week. Did Van Alexander call you?’ Alexander was the arranger and conductor.
“Bobby said, ‘Yes, Gordie.’
“‘We’re having trouble finding another song for the fourth side.’
“Bobby said, ‘What kind of song are you looking for?’
“Gordie said, ‘A nice ballad.’
“Bobby said, ‘Well, Roe wrote a beautiful song called “One Misty Morning.”‘
“Gordie said, ‘Can you sing or play it?’
“I said, ‘Yes, I can do both.’
“I sat at the piano and sang the song. He loved it and said he’d record it. What a wonderful thing to do. I just had to go down to the recording session, of course, where I heard the beautiful arrangement of my song by Van Alexander. What a weird feeling to hear twenty-eight men play a song you wrote! And Gordon sang it - and I mean, he sang it! He had such a great voice and really sang the hell out of it. It didn’t sell very well, but I was ever so grateful to Gordon for doing that -- he was one of my angels!”

Performed with ambitious first wife; that marriage ended in divorce
Happy second marriage lasted until his death

Attended Sammy Davis, Jr. and Lorry White’s Las Vegas wedding in January, 1958
Worked with Debbie Reynolds, Marcia Mae Jones, Elinor Donahue, Eve Arden, Rosemary DeCamp, Mary Wickes, Doris Day, Shirley Jones, Billy De Wolfe, Olan Soule, James Cagney
Toured the nightclub circuit in “4 Guys 4″ in 1980
Think I’m talking about Donald O’Connor? Not this time, at least not exactly. All of the above that describes Donald so well also applies to Gordon MacRae, another of my favorite old Hollywood entertainers.
Unlike Donald, Gordon {March 12, 1921~January 24, 1986} grew up in a stable home with both parents (Gordon’s father, William, died after Gordon graduated high school). Like Donald, Gordon worked as a child, although he just loafed around until the ripe old age of 7, when he got up at 4 in the morning to peddle milk from a horse-drawn wagon.
[I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I would have loved to see Donald and Gordon in movies together, like a remake of Holiday Inn, for example. They would have been as great a screen team as Crosby/Astaire or Kelly/Sinatra (better, in my humble opinion).]
