Starting a fansub group in 2023? Why not! I grew up on fansubs in the early 2000s and want to continue on the grand legacy of fansubbing.

Welcome to Gossameru Fansubs! I have done translation professionally in the past for other languages (French and German to English) but now just do it as a hobby.

I only translate and post items that are out of print and extremely difficult/impossible for people to find in English.

I am studying Japanese at the N3 level and use a combination of my language skills, auto-transcription, and translation tools to do my translations. They are amateur but I hope to continually improve as I do more of them! You can find most the ones I've done so far at this link on Archive.org. I also will have more comprehensive information, including credits lists and song lyrics from the movies, on my Neocities page. I don't have access to put my fansubs on torrents but if someone wants to, feel free!

I use a mix of Subtitle Edit, Aegisub, Handbrake, and Adobe Premiere Pro to do my fansubs.

Gossameru Fansubs is named after my cat, Gossamer.

If you know any other indie heroine 80s-2000s tokusatsu films that haven't been subbed, let me know! I can't guarantee I'll do them but if they look cool I'll add them to the list. The vast majority of my raws came from RareTokusatsu and I've quite a bit to work through, but I am always looking for new things to check out.

If you are on this page, you've probably already seen Hazel's video, where I first got the idea to translate these kinds of movies. If you haven't seen it and you're on this page, definitely go watch it!

I keep a list with multiple tabs, the important ones being: unsubbed films that I may do one day + what I've already done, already subbed ones I will get around to watching, and ones I don't intend to fansub but hey maybe someone will. The lists may have some films that don't fit the above criteria but the majority do. If you also do translation, feel free to use my list to do your own translations (I just nicely ask that you not translate on anything I put in "working on" haha but anything else is fair game, just let me know so I can remove it from my list!)

Reflections on finishing Eiyu Club's oeuvre

I'm wrote this as I finished the first draft of TAIMAN (2005), which was the final Eiyu Club film. And I'm a little down about it, not gonna to lie! Feels like the end of an era for my fansubbing. I'll continue, of course, but Eiyu Club films were something special. To think that there isn't any new Eiyu Club content out there for me to fansub feels quite sad. 

I started on this indie heroine tokusatsu fansubbing journey back in October of 2023, my first published one being Red Lilac (Dream of Shudder). I genuinely just went for it without thinking about much beyond that I wanted to see if I could, it looked like fun, and I wanted more people to enjoy these films. I also got to stretch my translation skills a bit, which I hadn't gotten to use for a while, and certainly not on audio (normally I had translated only written items). Quickly, working on the Eiyu Club movies became my favorite part of this experience.

Unlike the other films I've done, which are mostly one-offs from different production companies, I got to know the Eiyu Club cast and crew of these films as they often returned. One of them I particularly enjoyed was Ichizuki Ogawa, who starred in many of the earlier ones as the heroine and later seemed to transition to either support or staff roles. I also realized I enjoyed certain themes more than others - I tended to divide the Eiyu Club films into "silly/wacky" and "serious/dystopian" and the silly ones definitely were more my speed (although "serious" Evaroid Seria was genuinely one of my favorites and I feel one of their best works). 

Beyond the movies, I went deep into their website via the Internet Archive, and then the webrings from their related websites (the designers, costumers, etc), as well as finding those very few magazines that referenced them. Eventually I realized after all of this research that I was probably one of the top English-language resources for this fantastic little production company. It was a weird feeling, but also, I'm glad my little obsession could provide some sort of archival purpose. 

Misc. thoughts:

Tiny dream #1: I would love to have the CD(s)! (I think there was just one for Suzuka but surely they had to have made others...) The music in-video is not great quality, and many of their songs cannot be found in-video without dialogue/action sounds over it. In TAIMAN, there were a few insert songs at the end that in their original film were definitely overshadowed by dialogue and were shortened, but in the behind-the-scenes of TAIMAN had dialogue/sounds over them as well. Oh, to have good audio quality of the songs...

Tiny dream #2: I want to make myself some Eiyu Club themed merch. I have some access to Maker Hubs in my area, and actually made myself a lanyard for a local con I go to with indie heroine tokusatsu buttons on it, but ideally I'd make a t-shirt or something. I know there are websites and such for this, and I have looked into them and various designs, but that's been on the back burner as I focused on the fansubbing itself.

Maybe-possible goal #1: One day go to Osaka and go to Jungle Hobby Shop to see if they have ANY Eiyu Club items left. It's a long shot, I know, especially 20+ years later, but if I did find something that would be incredible. I own a few of the movies, bought from auctions online, but to buy in-person would be special. 

Maybe-possible goal #2: There are a few locations I scoped out from the films that are still open (as of this post), notably the car shop from Cyber Lady Suzuka 1 and the ramen shop from Cyber Lady Suzuka 2, both in Aichi Prefecture. I'd love to go, even though there isn't much else in the area I'm looking to see. 

Pie-in-the-sky dream #1: I don't cosplay often but I would cosplay Cyber Lady Suzuka. I definitely don't have the cosplay chops to make the outfit so I'm manifesting to the world - if that original outfit is out there somewhere, I can make it fit me, and (if it doesn't break the bank) I would absolutely buy it.

Pie-in-the-sky dream #2: "Machine Ninja Fuuri" was a never-made Eiyu Club film only briefly referenced on their website. I would love to know how far in production it got and if there is any footage of it at all. 

There's a Brian David Gilbert video that passes on a sentiment that I feel about Eiyu Club, about how becoming obsessed with something niche with few other people to talk about it with can feel extremely lonely, but the time you invested in it gives it meaning. Even if I had been on this journey entirely alone, just me and the gynoid girlies, I think I would have enjoyed it. But it does feel good knowing that people watched and enjoyed these works, and grew to love this little, tenacious production company the way I do.

TAIMAN (2005)

Several heroines find themselves trapped in a universe controlled by a madman who declares his intent: they must narrow down their numbers to earn the right to escape.

Support Droid Eureka (2005)

Masato and Eureka's quiet life is shattered by the arrival of a high-performance attack android threatening to steal Masato away, but Eureka won't let that happen!

The “Immortal Machine,” created by the natural-disaster scholar Souju.

Fundamentally, she is a standard android, but an ancient Chinese out-of-place artifact (OOPArt) embedded in her chest supplements her electronic brain and power reactor, allowing her to demonstrate performance far beyond her original specifications.

In everyday life, she serves as the one and only close companion of the lonely scholar Souju.

Dream Monster Chao

One day, a mysterious creature calling herself Dream Monster Chao suddenly appears before a young man named Kanata Haruka. Chao has come to help Kanata fulfill his dreams. Kanata, whose dream is to become a treasure hunter, immediately sets off with Chao to search for the hidden treasure of Bunzaemon Kinokuniya, but a great obstacle awaits them. Given the importance Eiyu Club has held in my life for the past two years, I felt it was a good call to try to get some of the actual physical items they sold since they obviously are no longer being made and slowly this media is being lost to time. Thinking of the best ways to display them around my apartment now...

(And yes, I intend to watch them in this format, even though they won't have my subs. It's for the #aesthetic to watch Cyber Lady Suzuka on a VHS as Shirodokoro Nobuji (Patron Saint of Eiyu Club) intended, after all!)

Why do I fansub these movies?

After watching the hazel video on indie tokusatsu fighting girls, I did what I’m sure everyone else also felt compelled to do: immediately started fansubbing the videos she referenced. In the process of doing so, I continually asked myself - who were these people making these low-budget, impassioned, and extremely otaku films? My usual areas of Japanese media knowledge - self-published comics/doujinshi and anime production - weren’t a lot of help in this Japanese indie film world, although given the otaku overlap in consumers I did make some useful connections between creators, conventions, and genres.

The deeper I dove into research on these indie production companies and watched their behind-the-scenes footage, the more I got a vision of what the network surrounding the very specific snapshot of time in this particular industry. For example, early Eiyu Club was a group of passionate people self-funding to make movies until they began to earn that money back to go onto bigger productions. The founder of Center Island, Hironobu Nakajima, self-funded many of the projects, even with the knowledge that they’d not make a profit. This sort of do-it-yourself, passion-fueled, community-minded mentality taps into my own roots in self-published comics, fanfic writing, and various other non-professional artistic pursuits.

After doing all of these fansubs and research, I feel something of a kinship with Eiyu Club, Center Island, and the other very indie production companies. Seeing a masked heroine do kick flips above an ugly demon man wearing tights while homemade midi music blasts over their fight scene has started to feel… well, like seeing a friend. Watching the behind-the-scenes footage where the actors are sprinting around moving props and carrying pieces of a tokusatsu costume reminds me that every film, no matter how cheesy or poorly edited they can get, is a miracle. It reminds me of beta reading a friend’s fanfic for a fandom I don’t even know, or sitting in a recording studio while my friend belts out songs that I’ll later clumsily mix with karaoke backing instrumentals. Throw some passionate amateurs together and hey, magic happens.

So that’s why I focus on this genre, and have a soft spot for behind-the-scenes footage in particular. For a few minutes, I get to watch someone be absolutely exhausted and enormously excited about something they’re making, even if it won’t make a huge profit, or even be seen by a ton of people. I watch it and think, damn, you guys made a movie, and you’re still so excited to make another after.

Wind is the result of a collaboration with Action Team “IF”. She is a battle heroine who engages in fierce showdowns with both monsters and heroes. Her agility in action scenes is far better than other heroines, and the battle sequences also reach an impressive level. She's truly a model battle heroine.

Battle Holography Wind (2003)

Wind is a holographic character born from the futuristic fighting 3D game machine "Character Tool". Today, she fights powerful characters with her unique weapons. (This work is a film adaptation of the original heroine Wind created by Action Team IF”, and is presented as a joint production with “IF”.)

This monster is seriously intense. Will Wind overcome the odds and defeat the giant beast, or will the monster come out on top? You’ll have to watch the film to find out. Personally, I think it’s amazing to see a heroine stand up against an enemy that’s bigger and stronger than she is—but at the same time, I kind of want the monster to win too.

A character created with the futuristic 3D fighting game machine "Character Tool." "Character Tool" is a game in which characters created on a computer are projected in 3D and made to fight each other. Characters have basic profiles such as monsters and heroes, and on top of that, individual abilities are set to make them into your own character. Wind is a compact female character, but is agile and highly skilled.

Reina (1993)

A childhood promise, a mysterious cat, and a secret genetic lab experiment collide as Ryota and Mii race against the clock to evade disaster.

"Reina" is a 25 minute movie by Magical Face that was directed by Shuichi Kokumai (known for his later work on Kamen Rider) and starred Motoko Nagino. It also features 15 minutes of behind the scenes footage.
