I've said this before but it's so obvious to me that most of the time when people are hypercritical of Will's character it's because he's not performing his victimhood in a way that they like. To go through abuse and trauma and not harden up, to stay afraid or to become more afraid, to assume that you are powerless and the best of your life is over, comes across as weak and selfish to many who haven't had that same experience/response. Will's lack of assertion in his friendship groups and his life in general isn't a malicious or selfish ploy to feign helplessness and play the victim. To develop the core belief that you are powerless after abuse that strips you of your power is to be expected and it will show in your actions to the detriment of yourself and those who care about you. When his friends start to leave him behind, when his mother worries after him, when his sister is bullied, the option to do anything is going to feel like it's not an option at all because to him it's been proven that confrontation and action when done by him can only make things worse, especially since he thinks it's all his fault in the first place. He is one of the most accurate and straightforward depictions of an abuse victim with this very common mindset post-abuse. I find it so strange how much people use such clear cut victim-blaming when analysing his character and how many people ignore his PTSD and victim status altogether.
And the show is very clear about showing us why he is the way he is too! When will faces the MF in season 1, we as an audience are primed to think that standing up to the creature will prove to be enough to defeat it. But the reality is that standing up to it made everything so much worse. Will is already shown as meek before this, its no surprise that a confirmation of his belief that standing up for himself will lead to something worse happening makes him even more passive in the future. Obviously in season 4 you're rooting for him to do something when it comes to El being bullied. But I'm glad they didn't do that because its what makes his character so realistic. He can only show his support in quiet ways, he can only comfort someone the way he comforts himself, in quiet, unobtrusive ways. This will make his transformation so much more powerful in Season 5 too!
