“Lesson #1 how far can humans see”
Lesson #2
robby: i just felt like i was drowning in peds
dennis:
jack abbot + everyone trying to convince reader that he has a thing for them but reader is in denial because of his wedding ring
santos is the first person to put the idea into your head. on a rare occasion where jack’s path crosses with the day shift, when he comes in wearing that SWAT uniform that makes your body run hot, he sends you a casual wink as he follows the SWAT team further into the chaos of the ED. santos shakes her head with a chuckle, and when you ask her what’s so funny her smile simply widens as she says, “you really are clueless, huh? abbot is crushing on you and he isn’t getting any younger, so i think you need to make your move soon.”
a couple weeks later, you’re working the night shift with ellis. shen and abbot swap places around one in the morning, so abbot is on your rotation this time. after a particularly close call with a patient that you manage to save at the last second with a discovery that not even abbot figured out, he squeezes your hip with a “good girl” and leaves you with ellis. she watches her attending leave, and asks you how long you’ve been seeing him. you look at her in confusion, still feeling the cold metal of his wedding ring on your skin.
for the next few months, comments are made by langdon, mckay, whitaker, javadi, and even garcia calls you jack’s girlfriend when he defends you against her. at this point, you feel like your coworkers are making fun of you. isn’t it obvious that the night shift attending is married?
“oh, you don’t know?” jesse retorts when you deny yet again that abbot has feelings for you on the basis that he’s married. “his wife died a few years ago.”
you frown at the new information, “i didn’t. that’s awful.”
jesse nods, “he was really messed up about it. he wears the ring as a tribute to her.”
you convince yourself that jack abbot is off limits, and you try your best to ignore the comments from your coworkers. it isn’t until the two of you are put on shift together in a severely understaffed ED on a cold december night that you realise how wrong you were.
“i need coffee.” he tells you.
“me too.” you say, rubbing your eyes to try to evade the tiredness.
“let’s go get coffee then.”
“i don’t think i can put myself through the burnt coffee in the staff lounge.” you grimace at the thought.
“i was more thinking coffee from upstairs. my treat.”
“oh, that’s okay. i got paid today.” you reply.
“(y/n), you’re making it really hard for me to ask you on a date.” jack chuckles, eyes shining with amusement.
“a date?” you squeak.
“i know coffee in the middle of our shift isn’t really first date material, but i was hoping we could then work our way up to pancakes for breakfast after our shift and if things go really well, eventually breakfast in my apartment.”
you gape at him and his smirk grows.
“jesse told me about your wife,” you admit softly and jack nods in understanding, as if he had been expecting this. “everyone’s been telling me that you like me, but i noticed you were still wearing your ring so i wasn’t sure.”
“i’ll never take it off,” he admits, looking down at the jewellery on his finger. “and if that bothers you, then i can’t go through with this. but i do like you, and i want to get to know you outside of these walls if you’ll give me the chance.”
you visibly soften at his words. this emotionally mature man is standing in front of you with his heart on his sleeve, and you would be an absolute fool not to entertain the possibility of something good in your life.
“all of it sounds great,” you confirm. “the coffee, the breakfast, especially the one in your apartment.”
that gets a laugh out of him and you decide it’s your favourite sound.
“come on,” he guides you towards the elevator with a hand at the small of your back. “before lena comes looking for us.”
when you hear the door open slightly, you turn to find jack hovering in the doorway. he looks apologetic, eyes flitting towards your computer screen where someone’s giving a presentation.
“it’s okay, babe, you can come in. i’m on mute.”
“sorry, sweetheart,” he says softly, voice still laced with tiredness. “i’ll be out of your hair in a minute. left my bag in here.”
as jack potters around the room, your computer pings with a private teams message from one of your coworkers.
oh my god, is that your boyfriend? he’s so hot!
soon, your laptop is flooded with similar messages from your coworkers who can clearly see jack in the background. even the poor intern giving the presentation stutters as she fights for her life on screen.
“see you later, honey.” he murmurs before closing the door behind him to continue getting ready for his shift with the SWAT team.
“okay, i’m sorry,” the intern says, pausing her presentation. “i can’t concentrate. (y/n), why didn’t you tell us your boyfriend is a silver fox?”
sharing a room with jack because the hospital refused to splurge on separate rooms for people since it’s only a two day conference.
he’s a total gentleman about the situation, offering to take the floor and reassuring you he’ll be fine.
“the bed is big enough for two people,” you end up blurting out, heat creeping up the back of your neck. “and i don’t expect you to sleep on the floor with your leg. come on, we’re adults.”
yeah, jack is an adult. he’s also harbouring a pretty strong crush on you that only robby has managed to pick up on. his old friend has always been able to see through him.
but he lays next to you in the uncomfortable bed, trying to keep as much distance between you as possible, which is proving pretty impossible when this bed was made for a hobbit. jack feels the hem of your top brush his arm and he feels like a teenager again, heart racing.
at some point in the night, sleep finds the two of you. you wake up the next morning to jack’s arm hooked around your waist, face buried into the crook of your neck. a breath escapes you as you begin to realise the situation you’re in.
you test the waters by placing your hand over his, leaning into his touch. he only tightens his hold on your waist in his realm of sleep, and you beam to yourself.
when i was a tiny baby queer (aka a 24-year-old), i went to my first pride festival probably three months after i kicked ex-gay therapy to the curb and came out to my parents. being the people they are, my parents came with me. they weren’t really sure about this whole gay thing, but they loved me and wanted me to be safe and happy and wanted to be involved in what was important to me, so they came along. (i also think my mother still might have thought i might get drugged or murdered or beaten by a protester of which there were plenty.)
anyway i wanted a memento of my first pride, you know, and this one vendor was selling keyrings, and i liked it, so i bought one. do you remember those italian charm bracelets that were all the rage like 10-15 years ago? it was a keychain like that, and it had a rainbow rooster, a rainbow cat, and then just a rainbow, and so I bought it.
i run into my mom a couple of vendors over and she goes oh you bought something? what’d you get? so i showed her, and i was like, “I’m not sure why it’s a rooster and a cat. Seems kind of random. But I liked the rainbows.”
and my mom, who was some form of minister’s wife for most of my childhood and teenagerhood, stares at me like she thinks i’m joking.
“What?” i say.
“…it’s a cock and a pussy, Jules,” she says flatly, and that is the story of how i died at the age of 24 while attending my first pride festival.
I love how every June this one gets dug up and passed around again, lmao.
oh no is this what we’re doing now
…relic…

My liege im sorry to break it to you but your advisor that's actually evil and wants you dead turned out to be straight. I know you really wanted to have an enemies to lovers situation with him. Yeah I'm afraid the poisoning didn't hold any romantic intent behind it. The king of the enemy kingdom is bisexual though, I could send him a letter? Yes, I'll make sure to include multiple threats of homoerotic nature. You will have your toxic yaoi, my liege
i always thought it was funny how in the lord of the rings sam and frodo head out and after awhile sam’s like “mr. frodo if i take one more step this is the farthest from the shire ive ever been” and then a ways after they meet up with merry and pippin on their daily vegetable run like jesus christ sam get out of the house once in awhile
100% how Jack sexts Robby and/or Dennis
she was this close to saying repressed country twink with daddy issues and chronic people-pleaser tendencies
