“And here Mr. Wayne, is your new secretary.” Lucius Fox said as he ended the office tour, with Bruce’s private office. Or rather, the secretary’s desk outside the office.
Bruce sees the girl working at a desk and gives her a charming smile. “Hey, Bruce Wayne.” He said introducing himself. “And you are?”
@gotham-caped-crusader
Ruth waves at Lucas. She liked him he was sort of the cool uncle of the office.
“Ruth Barnes. It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. Wayne.” She replies with a friendly smile reaching to shake his hand. She looks tired. But like she’s trying to hide it. It’s a look he knows all too well.
“I- have a few messages for you already…” she says pulling away from the handshake and setting a box up in her desk. It’s very full.
“You’ve got a lot of fanmail. If you like I could pre-open the letters for you. Save you a bit of time. This box is from the kids at the Martha Wayne Memorial Orphanage.”
Dick does his part well and then stands on the sidelines waiting for his parents as they finish their act.
Ruth is still tense. Her intuition telling her all is not well. She keeps her eyes on the boy. Her face a mask of amusement that hides the fear underneath.
Bruce gets a feeling, one that was honed by his time as a detective. He then looks around. And right as he spots the mobster, a gunshot ring out, and a pair of acrobats fall. One dead by gunshot, the other by the impact.
The scream Dick screams is heartbreaking. And Ruth swallows bile as she heard the thud of the bodies.
She trusts Bruce to get the gunman but right now…
She flies down and jumps into the ring. Making her way up to get the kid down from there. To protect him.
Hearing the kid scream, seeing him rush to the bodies, Ruth attempting to comfort him. For a moment Bruce wasn’t at the big top, he was an eight year old kid, sobbing in an alleyway.
A little while later the police are there, and so is Jim Gordon. He’s interviewing Bruce while Ruth is comforting Dick. “Ruth Barnes, Richard Grayson?” A detective asked walking up to them. “I’m Renee Montoya, I’m with Major Crimes. Can you tell me what happened?” She asked softly.
Ruth is in a chair with Richard on her lap. He’s wrapped in her Jacket.
Dick is still crying. He’s inconsolable. Not speaking to anyone.
“He’s not up to talking right now. I can tell you what I saw.” Ruth says softly.
-
Jim approached Bruce. “How are you holding up?” He asks softly.
“Of course Ms. Barnes. Could you tell me please?” Montoya asked pulling out a notepad.
“Not good.” Bruce admits. “I froze in there Jim. All that training, all those nights. And watching it happen again, and I was suddenly that boy in the alley again.” Bruce sighs dejectedly.
“I heard a gunshot… I saw… where the bullet hit. And then they fell. The shooter was by the entrance. I didn’t see… but someone threatened the Greyson’s before. Uh. Gang activity. Not Maroni. Someone encroaching on his territory. I’m sorry. I don’t remember names. Bruce was with me though. The bastard told Dick to enjoy the show. I could describe him if that would help narrow things down. I’m just terrible with names.” Ruth says.
Dick buries his face into her shoulder and closes his eyes pretending he isn’t here.
-
“Well you couldn’t be faster than that bullet Bruce. And the bastard didn’t want the kid. Apparently.” Jim frowns patting Bruce’s shoulder.
“Your secretary apparently jumped in and got the kid down by herself. He’s taken quite a shine to her…” he remarks.
“Can you think of anything odd before the shooting that happened?”
“That would help tremendously. I’ll get a sketch artist for you.” Montoya said gratefully.
“Ruth is something special.” Bruce says giving a small smile as he looks at Ruth. “Despite her medical conditions, despite the fact she could’ve hurt herself, she still ran over to comfort a boy who had lost everything. We need more people like her.”
“Uh yes actually.” Bruce says focusing. “Before the show, the Graysons were threatened by a mid-level enforcer in the Falcone family. Tony Zucco. He wanted protection money from the circus but the Graysons told him no.”
“…do we know if he has any other family?” Bruce asked after a moment, looking at Dick.
Ruth nods.
“You need anything buddy? Do you want a drink?” She asks as the detective steps away.
“How strong?” Dick jokes dryly.
Ruth cracks a smile. “How old are you?”
“Ten.” He says softly.
“Apple juice?” She asks giving him a hug.
“Okay.” He replies softly.
-
Jim cocks his head to the side for a moment but says nothing. Instead focusing on the information.
“The Falcones….G-ddamnit…” he mutters.
“No. No other family.” He frowns.
“If it’s any consolation, I think Zucco’s working alone.” Bruce adds as he thought about it. “Falcone and Maroni have a fragile truce at the moment. Both are equally as powerful as the other. If one were to try anything against the other it’d be mutually assured destruction. No, I think this was just an attempt of a side hustle.”
“If it’s possible, I’d like to take the boy to Wayne Manor.” Bruce admits to Jim. “I know what he’s going through, I might be able to help him. And if I can, I’d like to adopt him.”
Jim sighs heavily. “Bruce. I know you feel some sort of responsibility to this kid. But adopting someone because you feel guilty is the wrong reason for adoption.” He rubs his face.
“You don’t exactly have a stable home for him to go home to… at least talk to Alfred before you go talking to the circus manager okay?”
“If this is about my womanizing persona, I’m calling it quits.” Bruce says seriously. “If I want a kid in the house I have to set an example. Well if I can’t adopt him, can I take him on as my ward until I can?” Bruce asks.
“I called Alfred and told him what happened. And told him what I want to do. And he agrees.” Bruce admits. “The call actually ended right before you showed up.”
“Well I mean legally… if the kid is okay with it… I don’t know Bruce. Go talk to the Manager I guess, and then the kid… but I want it on the record that I think this is a bad idea…” Jim replies.
Bruce nods and goes over to Haley, the owner of the circus. After a brief discussion, and learning that the circus was shutting down for good because of this incident, Mr. Haley agreed to let Bruce take Dick.
Bruce then walked over to Dick, and knelt down to his level. “Dick, my name is Bruce Wayne.” Bruce said slowly. “I…I know what it’s like to watch your parents die. And I’d like to help you through it.” He begins hesitantly. “I’d like to take you in as my ward Dick. You’d live with me, and the man who raised me, in a nice big house, with lots of games and tv, and a gym that has enough room for an acrobatics course.” Bruce offered.
“I know you. You knew my daddy.” Dick replies softly. “He told me about you a bit…”
He looks over at Ruth and then up at the circus tent.
“I don’t really got a choice do I?” He asks. “The circus was already losing money… we couldn’t pay the bad guys.”
He takes a deep breath, thinking. Looking far older than ten. “Long as you never make me call you dad. Also. She promised me apple juice.” He points an accusatory finger at Ruth.
Bruce chuckles and holds his hand out. “It’s a deal.”
Alfred chooses then to walk up, and sneakily hand Ruth a box of apple juice.
Dick shakes his hand. Very seriously.
And Ruth gets the straw set up for the juice box. When Dick is done shaking Bruce’s hand a juice box is being handed to him.
He looks at Ruth as if she grew a second head. Then sees Alfred. He side eyes him as he takes a sip of juice.
“Bruce… introductions?” Ruth glances at Alfred.
Dick arches a brow at Ruth calling Bruce by his first name.
“Right. This is Alfred Pennyworth.” Bruce introduced. “He’s my butler, and he raised me after my parents were killed.”
“Pleasure to meet you sir.” Alfred said giving a kind smile.
“I uh… I need to get my stuff. It’s not much so it should… you got a car right?” Dick asks.
“Alfred would you mind helping Dick pack? I’m sure you’re the right person for the questions he has.” Ruth says. Wanting clearly to speak privately with Bruce.
“Yes, I’ll help pack.” Alfred said kindly as he held a hand out to Dick.
Once the two of them are gone Bruce sighs. “I get the feeling you want to talk.”
Dick takes Alfred’s hand and leads him to the camper that he and his family used to live in. It’s cramped but cozy and the space is well utilized.
“So you’ve known Mr. Wayne his whole life… my parents only really knew him from news and when he was a kid… what’s he like?”
-
Ruth nods. “Not here. Let’s go for a walk.”
She took his arm leading him out of the tent where the murder happened.
“Bruce… look. I haven’t known you long. And even I know you’re a great guy. But I don’t think you’ve really thought this through.” She says gently.
“Master Bruce is a caring man.” Alfred said rolling his sleeves up and finding some suitcases to put Dick’s things in. “He has a hard time showing it however. So just be prepared for that, just because he doesn’t show it, doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. He just doesn’t know how to show it in the moment.” He told the young man honestly. “He does try.”
“I know. I know this seems spur of the moment.” Bruce admits with a sigh. “But I think this is the right thing to do Ruth. For both me and him. I want to make sure he doesn’t grow up to be as messed up as I am.” He admits. “And honestly, I think looking after someone would be good for me as well.”
“He’s not got any records of bad stuff that he payed off right?” Dick asks suspiciously. “Does Miss Ruth live with him? Does she want kids? Cuz it’s pretty clear he wants her.” He mumbles.
“ May I speak freely sir?”she asks. And once receiving confirmation she continues.
“Bruce. If you want to take care of something to make yourself feel better. Get a dog. People tend to end up like whoever raises them. This wouldn’t prevent messing up, besides. Your schedule is incredibly full. How do you intend to juggle your job, your other responsibilities, and raising Dick?” She rubs between her eyebrows.
“Have you ever even babysat a child before?”
“If he has, I would’ve tended my resignation ages ago, and had a discussion with him via a shotgun.” Alfred said darkly. “I raised him better than that. He may be odd, but that’s because he’s a billionaire with too much time on his hands.”
“Ruth, Alfred doesn’t have to ask to speak freely, and neither do you.” Bruce pointed at as his way of giving confirmation.
“This isn’t about making me feel better.” He says after a moment. “There’s a fire in his eyes Ruth, one that can be mistaken for grief. He’s determined to avenge his parents if he could. I want to make sure he doesn’t become me.” He admits. “I’m not even going to tell him about the Batcave, as far as he’s concerned on that front, Batman’s been going after Zucco for a while now.”
“I have.” He revealed. “I don’t just donate to orphanages, but I volunteer at one as well.”
“Well that’s good… you didn’t answer me about miss Ruth.” Dick replies relaxing a bit as he starts packing.
“Okay… okay good… it just. I guess I felt a little blindsided. And I see now what you mean. He does seem to be handling this a little too well. Which of course means he isn’t… however I can help. Let me know okay?” Ruth replies.
“Ms. Barnes does not currently live with him, she lives in Crime Alley. But she’s his personal assistant, so she’s almost constantly by his side.” Alfred explained kindly.
“Thank you Ruth.” Bruce said gratefully and placing a hand on her shoulder. “And, thank you for not being mad at me for freezing back there.”
Dick side eyes Alfred. So he wasn’t a gossip… Dick would have to figure things out for himself.
“She’s nice. And brave.” He remarks.
“Why would I be?” Ruth asks. “I know what happened to your parents Bruce. I’m so sorry you had to see that again.” She says seriously. “We should start doing some research. We’ll need to make sure Dick has a good school to go to. And… we should see to a funeral for his parents.” She puts her hand on top of his.
“That she is.” Alfred said nodding.
“Maybe I can send him to the private school I went to when I was his age? It’s here in Gotham and Alfred can drop him off and pick him up. Ah, dammit, might need to do a press conference to lay down some ground rules about picture of him along with gossip columns, let alone those creeps in tabloids who do countdowns to child celebrities 18th birthdays.” Bruce muttered to himself, organizing things in his head.
Dick finishes packing up. Takes a look around the camper and bites the inside of his cheek. He didn’t want to seem ungrateful. But still the tears came.
“How far away do you guys live?” He asks after a minute.
“Good idea on both counts. I can stay and help Dick settle in tonight.” Ruth offers. “After living in a circus I’m sure you’d house will feel like a museum. He might enjoy the company.”
“We are two miles from here.” Alfred says kindly, giving Dick a gentle squeeze on the shoulder, to show that he knows how hard it is to leave the only home you knew.
“Thank you, I appreciate it.” Bruce thanks her, he then stand there awkwardly, not sure if he should hug her or not. He then sees Dick and Alfred walking up and goes towards them. “Are we ready to go?”
Dick sighs and eventually gathers the strength to leave the camper. Following Alfred to the others.
Ruth moves her hand from on top of his and smiles. She’s also feeling awkward.
Dick arches a brow at the painfully awkward. Fatherly hand on shoulder thing Bruce was doing.
This guy is supposed to be a womanizer? Damn. Money must do a lot for people…
“Hi.” He says softly as they approach.
“Hi kiddo.” Ruth replies. Moving to offer him her hand. He takes it.
“Yeah. I am.” He answers Bruce.
“Alright. Let’s go.” Bruce said guiding the young man to the car.
A little bit later they arrive at the manor. “We’re here.” Bruce said looking at Dick for his reaction.
Dick stares at the mansion for a minute. His mouth hanging open.
“That’s your house?!” He asks after a long moment.
Ruth covers her mouth and tries to smother a laugh. She had felt the same way when she first saw it. And had a suspicion that Alfred had watched her stare at it from the window for about five minutes before she had gotten the courage to go to the front door.
“Yes it is.” Bruce chuckles. Alfred’s shoulders are shaking as well. “It’s been in my family since Gotham was founded in the 1700’s. It’ll be nice to have someone else living there too.”
“Huh…You know with the amount of girls you get I thought it would be bigger.” Dick replies with an innocent smile. He gets out of the car, climbing over Ruth, and looks over at her she is biting the inside of her cheek so as not to laugh. And starting straight at the back of the headrest in front of her. Going steadily more pink.
Bruce sputtered in shock. “I believe they call that a nice burn sir.” Alfred commented getting out of the car.
“I..wa…ugh.” Bruce sputters as he slowly gets out. “Glad I’m giving up that lifestyle.”
“And here Mr. Wayne, is your new secretary.” Lucius Fox said as he ended the office tour, with Bruce’s private office. Or rather, the secretary’s desk outside the office.

Blanche and some other teenage looking girls were in the corner of a fairytale themed charity gala at the Wayne manor. Blanche, who was dressed as Snow White, had skin so pale she already looked dead, bright yellow eyes, rosy red lips, long black hair, and 4 very shiney and fancy looking prosthetics. They look engraved and silver but really it's lightweight acrylic and paint. Her canines were sharper than usual but seemed filed down too, poorly, like it was done at home. The other girls in her group, dressed as Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel, seem to avoid her when they can without letting the kids notice they're excluding her. When she gets to take a break from telling stories and making baloon animals for the kids she leans against a table slightly, not too much as to throw it off balance, and gets the redest beverage option at the table
Cassandra Cane wanders over to the girl dressed like a Disney princess, sees the red drink, and tilts her head curiously while pointing at it.
Blanche covers her mouth with her hand, using a napkins to clean up her makeup real fast. "Oh, sorry, were outside drinks not allowed? I packed my own tomato juice, it's basically the only thing I drink," Blanche smiles awkwardly
“It’s fine.” Cass said walking up to the woman and looking at the juice closely. She’s dressed like Mulan, armor and everything. “I’m Cassandra Cane.” She introduced herself holding her hand out.
"Blanche... Alley..." she shakes her hand. "I grew up in an orphanage with no family name so they just named me after where I was found, the white wash building in Crime Alley," she sets her drink down, fidgeting nervously. "You're one of the Wayne kids, right? Your dad's charity paid for my amputations and prosthetics, I wouldn't be able to move around now if it weren't for him"
Cass immediately clocks the lie about her last name. But everything else was the truth so she leaves it be for now. “I’m glad that Bruce’s charities helped you. It’s all he wants to do.” She said giving a small smile.
"He's doing a better job than most of us, I think... h-hey, does Mr Wayne enforce a curfew at his galas? It's getting kinda late and there's still a bunch of kids awake and running about," she sounds more concerned than curious, like she knows something she's not saying
“For kids other than me, yes.” Cass said as the parents and caretakers of the kids began rounding them up. “Bruce loves this gala, he loves making the kids, especially the orphans, smile.” She adds as Bruce, who’s dressed as the prince from Cinderella, is helping the kids get ready to leave.
"Ok, good, uh, glad to see they're getting to bed on time," she nods awkwardly, pursing her lips as she glances to the other party princesses. "Um... any chance your security team is equipped with silver bullets or stakes?"
“Why?” Cass asks on the alert for danger. Bruce notices and he starts keeping an eye out too, as do the other kids Bruce has taken in over the years.
She drops her voice to nearly a whisper, "we're vampires and I'm the only vegan in the group, they were planning to target the kids and I've been ruining their plans all night." All of the other party princesses heads whip around to Blanche the moment she outs them despite all the noise of the party
Cass manages to catch Bruce’s attention, and using hand signs that the family made, explained to him that the performers are all vampires. Bruce nods and manages the usher the kids out. Then the lights go out, and the Wayne family vanish in the time it takes for the vampires eyes to adjust. “I’m only going to say this once.” Batman said from the middle of the room. “Get the hell out of my city.”
The other vampires hiss while Blanche sighs deeply, grabs her tomato juice, and climbs under one of the tables. "Imma just stay down here until they're done with their tantrums. I aint no baby vamp, I ain't gonna get my butt whooped because they don't like the taste of tomato juice," she waves from under the table before fully disappearing under the table cloth. "Might have been turned young but you learn the same amount of life lessons in a decade regardless of if your body ages in that time, I am too old to be joining their little blood tantrum!"
Batman sees the vampire retreat under the table, and smiles. “You’d do well to listen to your friend.” He said pulling a skull out from under his cape. “This is the remains of the last vampire who came to Gotham. This is all that’s left of Dracula.” He announced making sure the others can see it, and take not of its fangs. “Stand down. Now.”
"She's not our friend, she's a loser!" One of the vampires corrects like a catty bitch. "She files down her fangs like a freak!" Another rolls her eyes.
"There's no way that's actually Dracula!" The final hisses.
"I believe Batman over another vampire any day!" Blanche shouts from under the table.
"Shut up, Blanche!" One of them snaps like Heather's
“You should listen to her.” Batman said getting a signal from his kids that the lamps are all set up. “Stay under the table!” He announces as floodlight turn on behind him, filled with UV rays, the same amount earth gets during the day after the atmosphere deflects most of it. The only safe spot to stand is either in Batman’s shadow, or hide under a table.
"Yeah, don't want a repeat of what happened to my limbs with my face," Blanche says sarcastically.
The other vampires all hiss and scramble like idiots trying to get out of the manor instead of just the light. It doesn't take them long to turn to dust, one on the hard to clean rug Alfred always gets onto the kids for messing up.
"Sounds like they were idiots out there," Blanche sighs. "Baby vamps, act like they're starving and picky to no end... so glad I liked tomato juice as a human"
After a few moments the UV lights turn off, and the regular lights turn back on. “It’s done.” Batman says. “You can come out now.”
She crawls out from under the table, adjusting one of her prosthetic leg straps, the left one which is below the knee. "Thanks, Batman. You were pretty fast to show up. The Wayne's are lucky, I don't got the speed or strength to hold off 3 baby vamps... I, uh... I'm malnourished for a vampire... can't make much money as a lone party princess, especially with my disability... a lot of parents who hire performers for kids parties are jerks..." she keeps glancing over to Robin, reminding herself not to swear infront of kids
“If you want to swear go ahead.” Robin said plainly causing Batman to give his son a look. “TT, I’ve heard worse Father.” He mutters.
“What will you do now?” Batman asks the lone vampire. “If you promise not to turn anyone, and stick to your diet, you’re more than welcome to stay in Gotham.”

@gotham-caped-crusader

@gotham-caped-crusader

“And here Mr. Wayne, is your new secretary.” Lucius Fox said as he ended the office tour, with Bruce’s private office. Or rather, the secretary’s desk outside the office.
