death doesn't have to be personal to touch you, of course, but i usually feel voyeuristic indulging in grief over a celebrity passing, especially if i don't have an attachment to the art they helped bring to life. as i sit here wrestling with a complicated numb shock at michelle trachtenberg's death, i am forced to acknowledge that - voyeuristic or not - grieving an artist is a gift we give in tribute to their art. i don't know trachtenberg or anyone close to her personally, but a piece of her life is imprinted vividly on my heart. she brought dawn summers to life, and i love dawn summers with a tenderness in the vein of the love i feel for my own little sister. it's not disingenuous to grieve the person who helped realize that emotion. far from it - it's proof that trachtenberg made something profound and with a lasting legacy.

may her memory be a blessing. her performance as dawn certainly will be for years to come.
