...if you had a better body
Several weeks ago my boyfriend (at the time) was telling me yes, he liked me BUT he would like me more if I had a better body.
“…if you had a better body.”
“…if you had a b e t t e r b o d y.”
Those words shook me. I had never had someone come right out and tell me, basically, my body sucked. He was insinuating I “hit the gym” often and become more toned, you know, like those models all over Instagram.
I’ve always seen posts about body image and how hurtful rude comments can be. I never truly realized the impact those words can have on someone. I never thought that someone saying something like that to me would really bother me. But it did.
You see, I was already struggling with body image issues and self acceptance. I had been stressing myself out over not going to the gym and not eating correctly. I’m aware of the fat on my stomach and hips and arms. And the thing is, the MAJORITY of women everywhere struggle with body image too.
Yes, you’ve heard this before but I’m saying it again because it NEEDS to be said: our society places such high expectations and pressure on women and the way their bodies look. Whether comments say “too thin,” “too thick,” “small boobs,” “not toned,” “too muscly,” etc., the list goes on and on. So let me just say this: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A “PERFECT” BODY. And there never will be.
Ladies everywhere, please please know your body is perfect the way it is. Love yourself. Accept yourself. And know the warning signs of a toxic relationship. Your significant other should love you (and your body) just the way they are. If they EVER tell you differently, drop them like it’s hot!
Today my mom told me.. “a person who values you, wouldn’t ever put themselves in a position to lose you.” and that really hit deep.
