1) Now this is a fun story. I actually wasn’t crazy about readings before, and I turned a few down, actually. It’s wasn’t until my friend (the same one I turned readings down from) was doing a fundraiser for an organization and selling her readings that I did it (more to help her organization than anything). Well, the reading was SCARY accurate, and I had to reevaluate my life. I then went out and bought myself a deck and book from ye olde Barnes & Noble, and the rest is history.
2) Honestly, I started reading for myself almost immediately. I didn’t study them long before I started doing readings for others, either. I’ve never charged (accepted tips once), but it may have been a month or two before I read someone else’s cards. This was a close friend who I knew, though. It took me much longer (maybe 7 months) to read for “strangers.”
3) Goodness, it depends on the deck. I often adhere to the guidebook for a deck, as it is intended to help us understand he subtle symbols and intended meanings behind the artwork. Sometimes I got intuitive and ditch the books, but I typically try to stay to the “intended” meanings.
4) Intuitively and experience mixed together. Some decks work best for certain types of questions, and it’s important to honor that. For example, my Kuan Yin Oracle is very pointed, whereas my Enchanted Maps Oracle is pretty open to answering anything (but it’s great with relationships), as is my Journey into the Hidden Realms Tarot. Once I select the deck, I shuffle three times and deal the cards.
5) I’m honestly not sure I’ve had any truly bad advice. Probably the one I hear most is that someone can’t buy their first deck, when I have bought each of my decks. For some people it works out that someone else gets them a deck, but that model hasn’t worked for me.
6) That there is no correct or incorrect way to read. Everyone is different.
7) No, but I have had a reading come out upside down and backwards. All three cards were in the reversed position (shouldn’t been upright), and the past and future should’ve been swapped. It was the absolute oddest thing that’s happened to me. The deck needed a rest, it was way overworked.
8) Actually, with my Journey into the Hidden Realm Tarot, the courts rarely represent a person, but rather to embrace/be wary of those personality traits in ones’ self or others. Otherwise, they can represent events, but that’s more often the Knights. Usually the rest of the courts represent either a person or personality traits in my experience.
9) Great question! I actually ascribe to “the source.” This is just a nondescript way I learned to refer to the source of energy when learning Reiki, and I have pretty much adopted the source as a deity/higher power/god (but none of those are accurate or adequate to discuss the source for me). Sorry, I know that’s not very descriptive, but I can’t really explain it anymore than that. The source is the source.
