“Oh have you? Well there you go. You got your head start, you know how everything works. I honestly won’t be surprised if we see you in Cannes or at the Oscars anytime soon,” he said with a chuckle. A waiter circled around them once more, noticing Jude’s empty plate and glass, and this time he did ask for a simple glass of water. “I don’t just say this because we have friends in common or anything like that, though. I mean, I haven’t seen any of your work, but you look like a person who has vision.”

“I agree. The Gone Girl one was also off the chain, every bit as good as Dragon,” Jude nodded. He naturally kept an ear to the ground for these things, and when he watched movies? He vizualised the score. “Oh god, yeah. We’re all some kind of dopers, junkies, or coke fiends. Alcoholics, if it’s nothing else. Unless you reach Rivers Cuomo levels of zen and live off of air and yoga. But I don’t think he does too much music nowadays. There’s a reason the Beatles were tripping on acid half the time; it helps along the creative process.”

“That’s the idea.” She chuckled. Her dreams were big and she worked hard for them. Besides if they nominated Greta Gerwig for her self insert movie, why wouldn’t they nominate Grace? She was so much better than her. “I’d rather ignore that mutual friend to be honest.” She said with the shake of a head, sighing. “Thank you for your kind words though, I really appreciate it. You must have a vision too since you can appreciate mine.” 

“I love Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, such a masterpiece. Soundtrack, editing, script, acting -- all together. It’s an amazing movie.” Even though she has a calm, cold presence, she always got excited when she talked about movies. Her nose wrinkled in distaste as Jude continued, she never understood the appeal of drugs. “I disagree. Once I read an interview of David Lynch and he said he tried drugs here but he thinks drugs just injure your system and it prevents you explore everything on your own. Everything can be seen, it’s all about the perception. You don’t need to snort a cocaine to get in touch with your creativity. It’s already there, you don’t need a chemical for that.”

It was one unexpectedly good point after the next and Theo was starting to wonder if Grace really did have it all figured out with her security system. It was no doubt that she was just as extreme with it in Lanford as she had been in Manhattan, if not more now, so he knew he wouldn’t be installing anything to same level that she did. Still, it was something to honestly consider. Theo relaxed back into his seat as he watched Grace, listening to her chuckle with a familiarized smile of his own. “No, I should’ve guess that,” he agreed. “You’ve always liked to keep the best schemes to yourself, right up until the end.” He let his gaze wander, considering the option of flagging down a waiter, but a moment later Grace’s actual interest in his life drew him back in. Theo only wished that he actually had something impressive to to tell her. “I’ve been working, mostly,” he told her, starting with what he could say honestly. “Not travelling much, but I’ve always liked life in New York best.” They both knew that, too, because he could never make the long-distance thing work – not when she’d been in California and certainly not in France. Theo paused for a thoughtful beat, keeping his gaze steadily locked with Grace’s before he admitted, “I talked to Theresa a little.” But there was no more positive information to offer on that front, so Theo dropped the subject quickly with a jerking shift forward in his seat as he diverted attention, reaching for his glass. “But I got a job offer here in Lanford last summer, at a private practice, and I took it. Slower pace for more money… I thought the change would be good.“ But was it really? “But you’d rather hear about all my failures, right?”  

“You should have.” Grace smirked, shrugging her shoulders. “I like to keep everything to myself, remember?” Which was true, after all she was an only child, she hated sharing — whether it’s a toy or a scheme. She leaned back as he started, pursing her lips together. “New York is fine. Paris is a lot better though.” It’s not like she expected him to visit because Grace knew they both weren’t the type who would be in a long distance relationship. It would be a nice surprise if he visited of course but when was the last time Theo has done something nice for Grace? She couldn’t recall. It was fine though, Grace wasn’t any different either. Her expression changed at the mention of his twin sister, she raised her brow in curiosity. “Did you? How is she doing?” Grace asked, her tone sounded curious. She never understood why people wanted to work in slower pace, Grace loved to keep herself busy as much as possible. “You know how I feel about the change,” She started with a sigh, reaching for her glass. “I hate it. I wish everything stayed the same.” Taking a sip from her water, she said and waved at the waitress. “I am not going to lie, I’d always rather hear about all your failures. Like how many cheap hookers you’ve been involved with, how much money you’ve lost while you were gambling -- you know, all the bad decisions you’ve made. Wouldn’t you want to hear about my failures too if I had any? I think you would.”

“At this rate, it’d be safer to stay indoors, wouldn’t it?” She didn’t like the idea of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or being accused falsely. It seemed like they were only mentioning residents of North End thus far, but who knew when it would end. “But at the same time, I’m bored stiff and I need to be out doing something. What the hell.” 

“Why would you?” Grace asked, raising her brow. “If you are not guilty, then you have nothing to worry about.”

“Yeah, that’s weird. Did she continue the fruit theme on her kids, or does she only have one?” Sierra asked curiously, but mainly just to pass silent judgement on Hollywood and the arrogance of it’s participators. “I don’t have a gun, carried one for too many years to know that I would never fire one.” She shrugged, “Good thing you didn’t forget to bring it though. Never know when you’re gonna’ have to pull it out to chase off some pathetic assholes.” Which is all they were, nothing more; they might have scared some, but nobody who hid their faces to protect their own asses made Sierra uneasy. If they were scared to be caught, why be a part of something like that? “Trust me, you don’t want to know it’s history. I don’t know though, to be honest, I haven’t put much thought into it. Probably just some bored kids, right?”

“I have no clue.” She shrugged her shoulder as she nodded. There were few occasions where she met Gwyneth Paltrow but she didn’t ask about her kids, the conversation was brief. “Too many years? Were you a cop?” Her brows raised, she asked. “I am glad I brought it. I thought I’d never use it other than my hunting trips.” She sighed. “If that’s bad, then yeah I don’t want to know. Maybe?” She paused for a second to shrug. “Or maybe it’s something bigger than that. You know all those roses and invitations giving me V for Vendetta vibes but let’s hope it’s just bunch of bored kids.”

“Hey, uh…” he said to the other person, speaking before he would turn to look at them. “Do you want this?” He gestured with the napkin in his hand. “It’s… well, it’s the waitress’ number, and- well, don’t get me wrong, she’s beautiful, but… I’d rather not get romantically involved with the people who bring my food in case things go south, and I quite like going here.”

“No?” Grace said with a frown, scoffing. “Why would I want that? You just said it would be dangerous to get romantically involved with a waitress because they bring your food, yet you expect me to do it? Besides, I don’t get chummy with the help. They serve us and let’s leave it at that.”

Ronnie was muttering obscenities under her breath as she roughly searched through her purse, attempting to locate her cigarettes and lighter but to avail. Hearing another voice, Veronica was more than ready to get into another argument until she lifted her head a recognized the redhead who had paid her bar tab a few weeks prior. “Yeah,” Ronnie managed to get out, though she could still feel the adrenaline from tossing the drink coursing through her veins. “I’m fine. Just felt like I need to get some fresh air.” She pointed towards the bar’s entrance. “I assume you saw that?”

Grace looked at the blonde as she waited for her response, her arms crossed together. “I am glad you are okay.” She said with a nod, smiling lightly. “Yeah I saw it. I assume he was bothering you?” Which wasn’t surprising because that’s most men do when they received no for an answer. “Good thing you didn’t let him get away with it though.” Grace wouldn’t cause a scene in public but she sure would find a way to deal with it. “Ugh men are gross.”

                             “Yeah…” He nodded slowly a couple of times, almost wistful, but not quite. He’d been so close to the traditional life— so, so close, and now he couldn’t even imagine it. He still longed for it on some level, but right now, Mia was more than enough, and if this was what life would be for him; then he wouldn’t complain. “Well, that depends,” he said, drawing a crooked smile. “—are you looking to invest? Because if not, I don’t think I can tell you much about it yet, but once I can, I’ll come find you.” He wasn’t sure she’d be the least bit interested in seeing him again, but that didn’t mean he had to feel the same way, did it? “Yeah, she’s been a good influence for sure. I hope she keeps it up.”

“Depends how?” Her brows raised in curiosity, Grace brushed her red locks behind her hair. “I am not looking to invest, however I have friends who always look for new opportunities.” Which was true, Grace was surrounded by rich people. After all she was a daughter of a CEO of a cable company, not to mention her dad also produced movies. “You got me curious though, I have to admit.”

“You just seem to be awfully defensive.” Anthony replied, shrugging at her. He was used to aggressive people, but it seemed weird how she was asking. “I don’t understand why you can’t just accept help.”

“I am not being defensive, I am being cautious. Last time I check Lanford wasn’t the safest town.” Referring to latest events, she rolled her eyes. “I can do everything on my own, that’s why.”

Hugh sat in the cafe eating some toast and he picked up a newspaper and started to read it as his coffee was being prepared. “So why are all these people wanted by the police? Don’t they know where these people live?” He mused with genuine interest. “My mom was like… Ohhh Hugh be careful out there at night. I was like er.. Mom, I’m six foot five and I’m built like a fucking tree.” He sighed as his coffee arrived at his table. He looked at the person at his table. “I think that ones yours.” He said with a friendly smile and went back to the news. “I’ve been away for a month and Lanford has turned into Gotham.” He said and turned to the sports pages. 

“Right? That’s what I thought. Then again I am not surprised because law force in US is full of idiots.” She rolled her eyes. A slight grimace appeared on her features after he quoted his mom. Was he a momma’s boy? Gross, she thought to herself. “If it’s a black coffee with no cream, then yeah it’s mine.” Grace took the coffee, thanked him with a nod. “What a luck I have -- I’ve moved here a month ago.”

Theo didn’t know why he was so surprised by Grace’s insistence that both an alarm and surveillance system would be necessary, even for an apartment in Lanford of all places. There was no one quite as doubtful of the human race as she was. He hummed, the mention of being able to keep an eye on his cleaning lady definitely working in favor of her recommendation. “I’ll look into it,” he relented with a touch of a shrug, not quite committing to any decision. He looked back across to Grace. “Are you still a believer in doing a full-body pat-down before letting the help leave?” Theo asked, a smile starting to curl at his lips. It only widened further when he watched her eye roll, unsurprised to find that she hadn’t felt very at home in Westbrook. It was a step-down from Manhattan, that much was a given. “We’re under the same roof right now,” he reminded, knowing that pointing out the obvious wouldn’t help out Grace’s mood at all. “You haven’t once mentioned any plans to dismember me, so thanks for that.”

“You should.” She nodded, reaching for her glass. His next words made Grace roll her eyes, she scoffed. “No.” She said dismissively, taking a sip from her drink. “I don’t need to do that because they know I have cameras in the house.” Putting her glass down, she rested her hands on the table. It was almost impossible for her to trust people, even if she said she did, a part of her was always doubtful. That’s because she knew what people were capable of, not because she went through a tragic betrayal, it’s because herself was capable of doing anything. “Unlike your house, this place is big. I have a room to breathe.” She sighed before giving him a smirk. “Well I don’t want to spoil, that’s why. Not because I don’t have any plans to dismember you.” She chuckled. “So,” Grace started, leaning slightly forward. “What have you been up to while I was in Paris? I’d guess but you know, I always assume the worst, so it’d be better if you told me.”

    “Ah, yes! The ‘I’m so indie it hurts’ crowd—” Sierra jeered, still wondering how anyone could do that do their children. It was bad enough having half her class thinking she was named after a stripper, a Lemon or Purse would have got it even worse. “Or the, ‘I’m so famous I can do what I want’ crowd,” The brunette pointed out with a laugh. “Yeah, well, you’re more prepared than most that’s for sure. My place didn’t get marked, no. Was at my best friends place though because he got a rose, looking after his daughter. We had to leave and go to mine last minute, so if I hadn’t forgot my laptop, I would have been in the thick of it.”

“Just gross.” Grace rolled her eyes. "I still can’t believe Gwyneth Paltrow named her kid as Apple. It’s so ridiculous and embarrassing if you ask me.” She scoffed with a nod. “Lucky that I brought my hunting rifle with me, I almost left it in Boston. God, that’s scary. I still don’t get why is this happening in the first place? Then again I’ve moved here recently, so I don’t know much about Lanford’s history.”

Taylor raised a brow, looking behind her to make sure she wasn’t talking to someone else because she couldn’t possibly be talking to her. “Nah, all the acid trips finally got to me. Makes me really think about life in a complete different way. You know, alters my mindset so I don’t actually feel alive.”

“I can see that.” Grace nodded, crossing her arms over her chest as she listened to other red head. Of course she could spot the sarcasm in her tone. “You should be grateful that you are still able to think. I am sure you’ve heard all those horror stories about acid trips.”

“I’m an elemantry school teacher, so my job involves talking to a lot of parents and such. I’ve just gotten used to it.” Anthony replied, shrugging at the woman once more. It was easier for him to just get to know the people around him rather than avoiding friendly conversations. “You don’t have to be so upset about it.” He added with a small shrug. “Yeah, I know where it is. You’re one street to the right off.”

Grace grimaced her dramatically, an eye roll followed. She never liked children but if there’s one thing she disliked more than them, it was their entitled parents. “I am not upset.” Her shoulders shrugged, she got defensive immediately. “What makes you say that?” Grace asked, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Oh, yeah, of course,” he started to agree with Grace, allowing just enough sarcasm and exaggeration to leak into his tone that he knew she’d pick up on it. “Because there’s just so many well-known celebrities hiding away in Lanford, all waiting to be robbed.” His blue eyes flicked back up to look at Grace, his eyebrows lifting for a brief second before his gaze dropped back to the menu that he was only half-skimming while they talked. The idea of the crying blonde tracking him down to rob him blind seemed like a stretch, but Grace wasn’t entirely wrong – plenty of people did hate him. Maybe a few less than Grace had on her tail, but Theo had never been talented when it came to peaceful goodbyes. He shook his head, flipping pages as a pinch began to form between his brows. “Both?” He parrotted in disbelief, menu tipping back to rest on the surface of the table. Theo looked across to the other, watching as she plucked through her own menu with clear disapproval. “You think that’d be necessary around here?” In Manhattan, sure, but Lanford? The town wasn’t necessarily hoppin’ with activity. His thumb tapped against the table before he murmured more to himself, “Maybe just alarms…” He may have valued Grace’s opinion, but Theo didn’t always follow her directions. He huffed a chuckle a second later, mirroring her eye roll. “Compared to your panic room, no. I’m sure my place looks like a broom closet. I’d invite you over, but you haven’t stepped foot out of Kingsgate, right? Besides, I wouldn’t want to trigger some kind of claustrophobia for you,” he joked in return.

”Celebrities or not but rich people have always been the target of thieves. I want to be prepared, that’s all.” She said with a shrug, rolling her eyes at him. Whether she was right or not, she knew Theo wasn’t going to take her advice right away and that’s what she liked about him. “Yeah both.” Her eyes narrowed at him, her brows raised. Why was he surprised? “Sometimes burglars find a way to mute alarms but they can rarely escape from security cameras. If you don’t want to install both, then go with security cameras. Wouldn’t you want to keep an eye on your cleaning lady too?” She said, pursing her lips as she closed the menu and leaned her back. “I am sure it does. And no, I haven’t. Not voluntarily at least. Unfortunately I’ve been in Westbrook twice and I regretted that decision immediately." Grace rolled her eyes. "Claustrophobia would be the least of my worries if we were under the same roof though."

As of the last few weeks, Veronica couldn’t help but feel like she was teetering on the edge of what little sanity she had left. Being back home had meant to bring her back to center, but lately, it felt like it was causing more harm than good. Case in point, the drunk asshole who had been shouting comments at her and her fellow officers for the better part of the evening. Veronica’s grip on her drink grew tighter and tighter before finally, enough had been enough. Sliding off her stool, Ronnie stormed over and brought her glass back before tossing the contents directly into the man’s face. “Fuck off, asshole,” Ronnie shouted, putting the empty glass down on the bar as she quickly spun on her heel and made her way outside, suddenly craving nicotine more than she could ever remember before.

The last time Grace’s seen the blonde, she was about to flirt with a creepy bartender, luckily Grace was there to help (which was quite funny if you ask me, since she rarely helped people -- it was one of those rare occasions). This was another day but the context was similar -- men being men. Grace watched Veronica throw her drink to the guy, she couldn’t help but smirk. Honestly the guy had it coming. Taking her purse with her (you never know with Lanford), she followed Veronica outside, “Are you okay?”

“No, but I do know a fair amount of people.” Anthony replied with a shrug. He made an effort to get to know as many people as possible. It was a nice change from his old life, and he liked the idea of being social with those around him. “So do you need the help, or not?” Anthony asked her once more.

“Why?” Grace asked with a grimace, knitting her brows together. Some days she had to socialize and meet new people because of her job, she absolutely hated it. Why would she bother? Most of them didn’t have anything interesting to say. As much as she hated asking for help, Grace also didn’t want to waste her time. Sighing deeply, she finally gave in. “Fine,” she started, crossing her arms over her chest. “Do you know where Flora is? It’s a vegan restaurant.”
