tl;dr
For the first three years of her life she didn't know that she and her father were her mother's second family. Created for no other reason than to give Rosalie Harrigan access to the power Jeremy Mitchell had as CEO of a media company.
After her father lost his job, Rosalie left and he and Grace moved to Texas to live with her grandparents on their ranch. Once it became apparent that Grace wasn’t the bond that he’d hoped for, Rosalie cutting all ties, Jeremy’s disinterest turned into dislike. Their relationship soured and Grace spent the rest of her childhood and teenage years walking on eggshells around him, nothing she ever did good enough.
The only bright spots were the times she spent among the ranch hands, them often showing her more fondness than her own family. She spent summers working the horses with them during the day and then playing cards at night. They taught her the rules and then the odds, her quickly grasping odds.
She was a teen when in a drunken rant her father finally gave up the name of her mother and not long after she took a trip to try to meet her. Rosalie didn’t acknowledge her, denied what she was saying, but she did get to meet her two sisters.
She eventually moved to New York alongside Blair after college. After a chance meeting with her mother she found out that the older woman was drugging someone for some con she was running. Curious as to what was being used, Gracie studied the substance, only to realise she could do so much better.
Using what little resources she had she eventually managed to track it to someone in the gang and told them that she could do a better job, earning herself a spot as one of their chemists.
Not long after moving to New York she met Greg Matthews, an old associate of her father's, and they started dating. To begin with it was a fairytale but eventually things deteriorated. She was back to walking on eggshells in an attempt to be loved, shrinking into herself to make herself small enough she didn't draw his ire.
He died almost a year ago from a heart attack, Gracie and almost all of his rich friends present at a social gathering when it happened. It was put down to his lifestyle having taken its toll. Tragic but not a mystery.
Since her family starting The Reserve she's been working with them, setting aside her chemicals for odds and bets. It's different work but she loves it, not least because it means she gets to spend more time alongside the family she was forced to grow up without.
Personality
Grace is generally out going and friendly, she has a big social circle and is always looking to expand it. But underneath the bubbly nature is a lifetime of insecurity that means she'll do just about anything to make other people happy. Fear of rejection is still ever present and so she buries it deep under making sure she's as fun to be around as possible. Full of jokes and stories she tends to go all out, sometimes overeager for someone to like her. Her empathy and compassion are always clear, emotions running high and at the surface at all times.
Headcanons:
Cannot cook to save her life despite having tried to learn several times. Whether it's forgetting about things, burning them or trying to make a substitution that goes horribly, she's best kept away from the kitchen.
Gets random hyperfixations and will info dump on the next person she sees about them. They usually tend to be about animals or something science based but she's been known to deep dive into pop culture too.
As a lonely child she turned towards books and media to keep her company, the love she has lasting to this day. She still loves all things nerdy and goes to SDCC every year, enjoying creating a new cosplay for each trip. Also has a twitch stream as a side hustle.
One of the first things she bought when she had enough money was her horse, Alfred. He reminds her of the best parts of her childhood and if she ever needs to clear her head that's where she'll be.
