There is no reason not to build high speed rail in the US, every major demographic wants it:
The suburban moms weirdly obsessed with Chicago want it
The lesbians in Seattle want it
The gay men in Minneapolis want it
The artists in Philadelphia want it
The polish ecologists want it
The trans women in the bay area want it
The guys who are really into Linux want it
listen i think bullet trains are cool and i get this is a joke post but. Indigenous Nations have expressed many concerns about building more rail networks across north america. famously the building of the first transcontinental railroads in Canada/the US required the near total depopulation of bison herds and the suppression of multiple Indigenous rebellions/resistance movements. if we're serious about ecological restoration, Indigenous land rights, and land back then we can't just act like everyone wants high speed rail and there isn't/won't be any legitimate pushback on it. whose land are we building these high speed railroads across?
