Fun Facts About DBT:
1. The 1991 study that rose Marsha Linehan (and DBT) to fame claimed DBT was effective at reducing symptoms because it showed a reduction in suicidal behavior. However, it did not show a difference in reducing internal suffering (such as depression, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, and identifying reasons for living) when compared to the control group that did not receive DBT.
2. DBT holds many functional similarities to ABA, both rooted in radical behaviorism and use operant conditioning to reinforce desired behaviors and punish undesired behaviors.
3. DBT, as it’s designed, does not accept criticism and pathologizes people who question it. A study by Lawson et al. (2025) reported that, when DBT clients expressed concerns over the treatment modality, their critical thinking was seen by their therapists as symptoms of their mental illness that needed to be treated.
4. DBT meets all four criteria of the BITE Model of Authoritarian Control, coined by cult survivor Dr. Steven Hassan:
- Behavior Control: See #2
- Information Control: Therapist authority over case notes and, in group therapy settings, encouraging reporting deviant behaviors of other clients to the therapist
- Thought Control: See #3, encouragement of only “rational” or “wise mind” thoughts, usage of thought stopping techniques
- Emotional Control: Narrowing the range of emotions (deeming some emotional reactions as irrational or “willful”), any problems that arise in therapy are a result of the patient’s pathology and not the therapist or treatment (see #3 again), instilling fear of being shunned (therapist initiating removal of warmth techniques by acting cold towards the client in an attempt to extinguish “problem behaviors”)
I feel like ODD being an official disorder in the DSM should be the thing that makes everyone go “hm” about how psychology is practiced
[looking a child directly in the eye] i diagnose you with Shitty Bitch Syndrome. this makes it legal to do medieval german tortures to you by the way
cmon man
also you would be surprised at which group gets disproportionately diagnosed with this disorder. did you guess black people. because its black people
"youre anti psychiatry? its such a privilege to be against medication!" before i was properly medicated i blew £2000, dropped out of uni, and became an alcoholic. now i am back at uni getting first class grades, have recovered financially, have a good relationship with alcohol, etc. i did not need to be gatekept from the right meds for me for YEARS & abused to hell and back in the process of trying to get them. i should've simply been heard and given them. i didnt need to be treated like i was a murderer for just existing. THIS is anti psychiatry, not "you shouldn't take meds"
Genuine and honest question!:
How is a history of unstable relationships automatically assumed to be my fault or a symptom of a disorder? People suck. People are assholes. People will hurt you. Instability will happen very often in life as a result of just being around and interacting with other people. You are experiencing everyone's individual unique person-hood. You cant hold hands and sing songs with everyone you meet, that's an unrealistic standard. Finding people that match you is difficult as fuck on its own and even worse if you are marginalized in any way. Attaching to those who you match and feeling very intensely about it is just logical if you have been hurt so many times by those who you don't match. I know I'm not alone, everyone I'm around has been through this, they experience this. i don't think I've ever befriended anyone who has not had a long history of unstable relationships!
Getting on my soap box to say I think "identity disturbance" as a symptom has GOT to have something to do with transphobia. IDK but the DBT therapist using it as an excuse to convince me I wasn't trans was a major issue and a reason why I quit.
