Artist Statement#5

For this project, I tried to emulate Erwin Wurm’s one-minute performance art. I struggled with trying to come up with an idea for this piece. It took me some time but once I decided what I wanted to do, everything else was pretty easy. There’s no intended message for this piece. I just wanted to come up with something like a performance art. I used Sam as my model for some of the images. The process was funny and unusual. Overall, this project has inspired me to explore new things and do something out of my comfort zone. It has also encouraged me to not be afraid to make mistakes.

Reading Response #5:

Reading and watching videos related to performance art was very interesting. Some were very intense and some were playful and creative. I wasn’t really completely familiar with this medium until now. Roselee Goldberg’s idea of performance art reminds me of some of the contemporary artists like Ai Weiwei, who bends the rules or questions political or social matter. When I first heard about the word performance art I thought it was theater. But it’s more involved than that. It seems like a personal and social experiment. It’s sort of a psychological experience that involves the performer and strangers. It’s interesting to see the result when artists give people the freedom to do whatever they want. The aspect of overriding belief that art is limited to the production of art objects reminds me of the topic “Embracing a wider framework for Art production” but without creating Art objects. Each performance calls on the audience to experience the making of an artwork rather than contemplating static objects within an exhibition framework.

Project #4 Video Art: Vanishing and Becoming

For this project I wanted to use storytelling in video art as the force behind the creation and destruction of life. This video starts from a perspective that presents the beginning of a life form appearing to remain in a state of unconsciousness, even as it moves in response to the black fluid that fills its environment. When the view zooms to an overview of an expansive field of unconscious life, the viewer becomes highlighted as the conscious life that can sense reality. However, when the view zooms out to a TV screen that is clicked off, the viewer is again confronted with the same question: are we ultimately the conscious or unconscious life form? In some ways, it depends on how we weave our story with what we can fathom and believe. The dark imagery can be a metaphor about the obscurity we come from in the beginning of our life, while the illuminated screen is what allows us to observe and question the unknown reality that surrounds us. I chose a song by Tool because the instrumentals abstractly reference a combination of organic and mechanical sounds.

Great job! This meets the challenge of vanishing and becoming perfect in my opinion. I really like your idea and intention behind this project. It’s very intriguing. I did find the color a little dim but other than that I think you executed well.

Project #4 Video Art: Vanishing and Becoming

For this project, I used different light forms and EDM music together. I wanted to create something that shows how lights and sounds can reflect or express fun. To meet the goal of vanishing and becoming, I used two distinct light forms with vibrant colors and added them in between different scenes. My intention was to make the light forms appear and vanish, for example, the laser lights, and make it become the music light show. The light sort of travels throughout the whole video. I based the duration on the motion of the sound and light. This idea was intended to express fun with the sound of music and colorful bright lights.

Exercise #4 Music Video Remix

This was a really fun and simple exercise. I used the iMovie app for this music video and the music I chose is one of my favorite songs by Odesza called “Late Night”. The images and videos are from some of the trips I did this year. I like the process of putting it together to try and connect the music with the videos and images to create a story of memories.

Reading Response 4

It was really interesting to read about the different stories of the origins of art. As an artist, I’ve always admired art and everything about it but I never thought of finding out where it all started. I’ve maybe thought about it and asked a friend during a conversation but never did any research. Pliny and Buddha’s perspective both makes sense to me. I think art can be interpreted in different ways. I believe that Art and images are our return ticket to a moment. It can also be a reflection of our reality. Art has been defined as a vehicle for the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, a means for exploring and appreciating formal elements for their own sake, and as mimesis or representation. I think it makes sense that light and projection may have been our first medium because I can see them being the primary source of images. Even though Pliny and Buddha’s story contrast with each other, I think they both somehow completes the origin of art. It sort of reminds me of the ying-yang sign in the light and shadow aspect. I really like Klein’s concept of human’s ability to project inner life onto external objects as the key and distinguishing element of human development. This made me think about not only how we project our inner life onto external objects but also our outlook in life and that whatever we project to the universe becomes our reality. Overall, I thought this was an awesome read. I might’ve had a different take on this reading but it has provided me great value.

Making a Gif in Photoshop for the first time was very interesting but it was a bit challenging when it came to the size. I wish it could be a little larger but it doesn’t work once uploaded unless it’s this size. Definitely still messing around with it, hoping that I could get the sizing figured out.
