Strategies for getting off social media to do The Thing that (sometimes) help me, a person with adhd:
Social media is particularly addictive to the adhd brain because it provides a lot of varied and new stimulation. It gives you disc horse to get sucked into, and then when you get bored you can scroll for a bit and find new discourse to get sucked into. It's a trap specifically made for us, stimulation seeking brains.
I am going to stipulate that these help, but sometimes the executive dysfunction just laughs and say no and I have to live with that.
The moment you think "oh man I need to go do (x)" go back up to the top of your feed and reload. Either scroll to where you've caught up to where you were last or until the next time you think "I really need to do (x)". Allow yourself to do this a max of 3 times.
Find something to do that involves waiting- make a cup of tea, brush your teeth, microwave some popcorn, I dunno whatever has a timer. Scroll while your waiting for the thing to be done and then hey! You have a new task to do, so you may as well also go do (x)
Set a timer. Give yourself 5 or 10 minutes, then go do the thing for 5 or 10 minutes and go back to scrolling. Remember that if it's a task that will take a long ng time it (probably) doesn't have to be done all at once. It's ok to do it in short chunks.
As always, if you have more strategies please share them so my bastard brain will let me stop scrolling through Tumblr and go get ready for work like I should have done 5 minutes ago
pretty boy isn’t an insult. even if you sneer it at someone while pointing a gun at them and demanding their wallet, you’re still complimenting them. you’re just doing it with homoerotic hostility. fruit on fruit violence. why don’t you buy them flowers with their money that you just stole.
mutuals I am sneaking up behind you and gently placing this on your head
when inej asked him what he wants, kaz really thought 'you, inej. you.', just to dead-ass say 'to die buried under the weight of my own gold' out loud. i don't know if i should laugh or cry

You fucking dumbass (complimentary)
I have so much love and respect for women who are honest about their own loneliness but also find the good in it like when audrey hepburn said “I have to be alone very often. I’d be quite happy if I spent from Saturday night until Monday morning alone in my apartment. That’s how I refuel” and when charlotte bronte said “I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself” and when jenny slate said “I think I’ve come to terms with the fact that there will always be a ribbon of loneliness running through who I am. But that’s why I want to do comedy, and why I want to connect with people. You can use that ribbon to be a part of a finer tapestry, or you can choke yourself out with it! Your choice!” and when mary oliver said “whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh & exciting - over & over announcing your place in the family of things”
Books recommendations
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
Now, I know that this is a classic and very known book. But really, I did not officially start reading, but I can already tell that it'll be really impactful. The writing is very sophisticated and sometimes hard to understand so I wouldn't recommend it as a first read. Perhaps read it years after buying it, make it special and authentic and open it when the sun is bright and flowers are never out of sight.
Claude Gueux by Victor Hugo
It's the first book that I've ever annotated so it holds a special place in my heart. The book addresses in a pejorative way the death penalty by narrating the story of Claude Gueux, a prisoner, and as Victor says it, quite a grave and honest individual. He, the author, also states that every paragraph of the story would serve as a headline of a book where this big problem would've been solved.
The book ends on a fatale note of the author : «La tête de l'homme du peuple, voilà la question.
Meaning : « The head of the common man, that is the question. This head is full of useful germs. Use it to ripen it and bring it to fruition that which is most luminous and better tempered in virtue. Such assassinated on the highways who, better managed, would have been the most excellent servant of the city. This head of the common man, cultivate it, clear it, water it, fertilize it, enlighten it, moralize it, use it; you won't need to cut it. »
Antigone by Jean Anouilh
This story is too good and too complicated for me to talk about it here, so you can do your researches but I highly recommend it. It is tragic and truly beautifully written, it is a book that I will forever cherish.
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
It is actually a fantasy series of 4 books in total, and probably one of my favorites. I still remember the unknown feeling that squeezed my heart each time I read a page or completed a book. It was truly something that I wish I could experience again for the first time. I will always recommend it to fellow readers.
Chronicles of the emerged world by Licia Troisi
It was a pretty good series actually. It's three books in total and I had a really good time reading them.
All of Jules Verne's work.
Do I need to say something else ?
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
This book destroyed me. Truly. It is absolutely necessary for people to read it because it is truly of one the most beautiful, incredible and amazing book I have ever read. The author also addresses the unjust way prisoners are treated, how many of them were there for small reasons yet an unreasonable amount of time. Jean Val Jean is a beautiful exemple of the just and good-hearted man who has been forced to steal by poverty. I hope that you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
Fuck this shit. Eat cake. It's somebody's birthday somewhere *shrug*
“Nostalgia is an illness for those who haven't realized that today is tomorrow's nostalgia.”
― Zeena Schreck
I think all my problems would be solved with hot chocolate croissants and sleeping on someone's lap while they read to me.
