Things that absolutely MURDERED me in episode 8, Triple Cross:
- Viggo taking Hiccup’s hand.
- The way Hiccup opened his hand to reveal the Maces and Talons piece Viggo had given him.
- How that whole thing with their hands was centered and it was just their hands in the shot.
- The way Viggo withdraws his hand, leaving Hiccup’s centered in the shot with the piece, has a finality and resignation to it. It’s a goodbye.
- The music at that part. It seriously added to the emotions of it.
- That last scene with Hiccup putting Viggo’s piece on the board.
- The kind of slow, reluctant way in which Hiccup knocked the piece over.
- The resignation in covering up the game board. The game is over.
- Those three, deep piano chords during the last ten to fifteen seconds. Starts after he knocks the piece over.
- How Hiccup leaves the room and the last shot is centered on the covered-up Maces and Talons board.
That episode was a masterpiece of cinematography. I feel like there were so many things done “camera-wise” to evoke emotion, and oh boy did it work. Plus the voice-acting. And the music. It all tied together so incredibly and though it was sad to see Viggo go, it was the absolute perfect ending for him. I don’t feel like anything else would have worked.
I agreeeeeeee
