The Joker (1975) Issue #9
Batman - 1x04: The Penguin’s a Jinx
The Joker (1975-1976)
60 years ago, the Joker returns for the third time to Gotham City in “The Joker Trumps an Ace” & “Batman Sets the Pace”.
As the first season was a mid-season replacement, there would be additional episodes for the first season to come. The second and third seasons had already completed.
What initially seems to be the onset of a series of senseless crimes committed by the Joker turns into a series of crimes that lead up to the ultimate caper.
The Joker and his Henchmen rob a fur salon. The Henchmen get the patrons bound up in the center. Joker is shown taking a jeweled hairpin from a particular patron.
For the initial series of Joker episodes and this couple, the Joker clearly has more Henchmen than who get captured in Bat-Fights. In the first set, the Henchmen at the Comedian’s Hall of Fame do get caught as Joker escapes. However, Henchmen involved in the Television broadcasts of the opera and newscast don’t get captured due to a Bat-Fight. Later on, at the warehouse and ship christening several Henchmen also do not get captured due to Bat-Fights.
During this series, several Henchmen do not get captured due to Bat-Fights either. Numerous Henchmen involved in the capture for the Bat-Fight, for example, do not appear to get caught. The same can be said for several Henchmen involved at the fur salon.
The Duo head over to the golf course where the Mayor and the Maharajah of Nimpah are playing a round. The Maharajah plays with jeweled encrusted gold clubs. The Dynamic Duo are watching from the clubhouse. A successful putt results in knockout gas being released (due to the stolen jeweled hairpin being used as a trigger to release the gas).
As the Duo race to the scene via the Batmobile, first the golf clubs are stolen. As the Duo chase after the thief, the Maharajah is also being kidnapped via a forklift being used to lift the severely obese Maharajah into a van. Reversing course without burning up the fairway and thereby endangering other golfers causes the Batmobile to fall behind in that chase.
Suddenly in the midst of the fairway, the van disappears. It would be later discovered that this van has reversible panels which when activated flip a series of mirrors to camouflage the van. As the Duo arrive at the pint near where the van vanished, a small replica (minus the reversible panels feature) is discovered. The replica even has the name of the company that had appeared on the sides of the van.
The Duo head over to the location of that company. Upon entering, after a brief reconnaissance the Duo believe they have found the Joker and his Henchmen playing cards. Tossing their Bat-a-Rangs, they bounce off and the mirrored panels retract to reveal the van. Joker and his Henchmen ambush the Duo and quickly bound them up.
The Bat-Trap has the Duo being led into the bottom of a smokestack. Joker asks if they are good swimmers. Once sealed inside as the Duo begin to free themselves, a deadly gas is introduced into the smokestack to drown the Duo. The Duo escape by scaling the interior of the smokestack while they are back to back. As the Joker prepare to leave, he has the gas removed from the smokestack so he can see the deceased Duo. He discovers they are escaping instead.
At Ferguson’s, Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson are shopping for party favors for a party for Dick. Bruce utilizes a special prism that turns any mirror into a reverse effect so one can see what is on the other side of it. Bruce discovers the Maharajah and several of Joker’s Henchmen in a concealed lair. Spotting an air vent, back at the Bat-Cave, Batman uses math to determine where the other end of that air shaft is.
The Duo discover the end of the air shaft. They slide down to surprise the villains. During the Bat-Fight, Joker flees when he realizes the tide of that battle has turned in favor of his adversaries. Having defeated the 4 Henchmen, the Duo search the lair in search of the Maharajah but fail to find him.
Batman calls Commissioner Gordon while Robin finishes tieing up the captured Henchmen. Joker also calls the Commissioner and issues his ransom demands. Joker even puts the Maharajah on the line to outing what he and Joker have agreed to. The Maharajah will be released so he can go to the bank to issue a personal check for the ransom in the stipulation that Batman endorse this check personally.
Batman wonders why there has been no protests from the Nimpah embassy since the kidnapping occurred. He calls the palace in Nimpah and discovers the truth. The real Nimpah is on a hunting expedition in the Nimpah Mountains. The Duo plot a counter maneuver but keep both Gordon and Chief O’Hara in the dark.
At the bank, the Maharajah arrives with 2 of his guards and writes the check payable to Batman who needs to endorse it for the money to be released by the bank. Using a very large needle, Batman pierces the Maharajah’s attire as the needle penetrates deeper and deeper. Once the needle makes contact, the Maharajah tosses the briefcase full of cash telling his guard to go. However, the Duo began the climatic Bat-Fight.
During the Bat-Fight, Chief O’Hara tries to stop the Bat-Fight. The Maharajah’ stuffing is being torn into during the Bat-Fight. The Duo quickly knockout the 2 guards. When the Maharajah is knocked out, the rest of the stuffing is removed. Then the face mask is removed to reveal the Joker.
