I've been seeing the "Can lesbians like fictional men?" debate all over tiktok again and it's bringing up a lot of memories. So I want to give a rant on my perspective/personal experience with this debate:

I grew up undiagnosed autistic. I've always had special interests that would revolve around one specific character. The character would shift from time to time, but it often times would be a male character. Because of this fact the adults around me would brush off my intense interest as just a "silly crush". The other kids would too, which had led to me getting made fun of a lot. So I began to believe that I just had a dumb crush on this man. But the thing is I did not. I never had any actual romantic attraction to any of these characters. I just had a very strong interest in them, I simply just like them. And there's something to be said about the adults in these scenarios that saw a child with such an overwhelmingly intense interest in a topic and shrugged it off as a girl having a crush. I don't think I've ever seen a grown adult look at an autistic boy and determine that he had romantic interests in the model trains that he put together.

So, for years I claimed to be bisexual because I feared that I had to sacrifice talking about my favorite characters with my friends or else they would think I was faking being a lesbian. I never had a single instance of attraction to a man, I hated the prospect of dating one. But since everyone had convinced me for so many years that I was romantically attracted to the subject of my special interest, I believed that I just needed to wait until I found the one real man that I could tolerate. But obviously that does not work. I can realize now that there is a difference between my romantic and sexual attraction, which only goes for women, and the male characters that I have an interest in. Some people still genuinely do not believe that I am a lesbian because of this, but oh well! I no longer want to hide my sexuality or my special interest. I am sure that there are some people who this debate genuinely do apply to, in which case it is totally valid for them to realize they are bisexual too. But a lot of people, specifically autistic people, can't tell the difference between romantic, sexual, platonic attraction or just an interest apart from eachother very well! In my experience the combination of sexism and abelism led me to be basically hardwired into believing that I liked men while the traits of my autism were ignored and belittled.

Being nonbinary really has become so restricting like it's just another binary not even other non binary people believe that I use They/Them because I'm too feminine or whatever. Like what's the point of us doing a pronoun circle if you only acknowledge the people that "look" like the pronouns they say and ignore everyone else. You're all so performative.
