For my assemblage, I utilized old magazines, travel booklets, brochures, plane tickets, editorials, photo books, and novels to create the collages above. I wanted to keep this first task to 2D, as I want to move into the 3D space following this. I began by cutting out pieces of images, photos, and words that I liked, without having much of a plan in mind. After a bit of time, I had created a solid pile of cuttings and began sifting through till my mind began to place things together.
Now, as you can see, I have created 3 different spreads. As I began putting different pieces together, I was struggling to use every single one of the cuttings I loved in a single piece. So I created a bit of a series, that sort of give way to an inner monologue I have been having with myself for a couple of years now. I had no plan in mind to create a physical representation of personal thought but I suppose lacking a plan allows for that creative flow of thought.
I pulled inspiration from John Stezaker, especially in the 2nd collage, as well as Sigmar Polke. I was inspired by the overlaying pieces of varying color scheme as well sculpting a commentary that pushes itself off the pages. I explored these concepts a lot while selecting and arranging different cutouts.
For my work, I assembled these simultaneously but at the conclusion, found they worked most effectively in this order. Each holds a narrative in itself but adds into a larger concept when I put them in this order.
For recreation, I want to explore a way to push these concepts into a unity in a 3D piece. I have a pair of all white converse sneakers that have travelled far and wide with me. I think it would add to the conversation in being the canvas, as I have already painted the shoes by walking throughout life every day in them.
