something that really strikes me how rarely people discuss the expectation of privacy as being as (historically) new as it is.

like. don't get me wrong. there has always been a need and a desire for people to have personal space, to be on their own for a while, to do secret and intimate things not in public view. but the idea that it is a necessary thing to have private spaces within your own home is. so new.

like - at least in most of Europe - even among the wealthy, the idea of a space for Just One Person to use has typically been the preserve of the master of the house in his solar/study. which is also a work office where he takes meetings, so it's still not, like, private.

very wealthy people might have their own bedrooms, but the vast majority of people (including in the middle class) shared their room with at least one other person - a spouse, a sibling, a fellow apprentice or worker, a bodyservant...

and for most people who weren't actively wealthy, the standard living situation even into the 20th century was a one- or two-room cottage/tenement where your whole family would live, often with the livestock in the winter (for their shelter and your warmth)

and. idk. There's currently a whole conversation on my dash about whether it's abusive to have sex in front of animals or children, and regardless of your feelings on that... idk. Feels like a pretty big gap in the conversation not to acknowledge that "in front of animals and children" was the main avenue available for sex for thousands of years.

Also would like to point out that men tend to get custody in every case when they ask for it. The stats popularized by MRA's about women always getting custody are largely based on cases where the man didn't even show up to court or pursue custody to begin with. If given the choice between an abusive father and a mother, custody is still more likely to go to the father.

Secret of Mana's "Ceremony"/"Oracle" may not be in the same style as Deltarune's "NOW'S YOUR CHANCE TO BE A"/"BIG SHOT", but the "theme when they're a Guy"/"theme when they're a Creature" transition is 100% playing in the same space.

There is something incredibly poetic and tragic about the Walt Disney animatronic exhibiting the same moral issues of the Lincoln one (looking inaccurate, causing mass discourse about whether the descendants would have wanted it, questions over likeness and whether you're depicting an idea of a person that will massively distort their image years after they are no longer around to defend themselves), down to being in the same venue and show structure.

I hate hate hate that you're taught to be honest in no uncertain terms, then you turn 16 and the same people who demanded the highest quality of honesty, the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth, get furious at you for not lying on a job resume then in the interview well enough and also uphold the high standard of truth still applies.

i have some guesses but i’m curious to know why you dislike the term “paraphilia?” this is an earnest question i promise i’m not trying to do a “gotcha.” is it that it too strictly delineates “normal” and “abnormal” sex?

firstly, I have problems with the psychologist and sexologist who popularized the term (john money) for his own theories and their consequences, including beliefs that intersex infants must not be raised outside the gender binary and must be subjected to surgery. his advice to patients ended in suicide. his definition of paraphilia also doesn't hold much weight in my opinion--it encompasses everything from consensual bdsm to actual sex crimes. what use exactly is this category? not to mention the issues with "paraphilic disorders" in the DSM. are people experiencing depression and suicidal ideation because of the "paraphilia" alone, or because they're aware of the associated stigma? is it really a sign of mental instability to be greatly concerned with the way others perceive you and may treat you? these are common critiques of the topic brought up by professionals to question the validity of classified paraphilic disorders, not just me on tumblr.

basically, paraphilia as a concept ranges from "not useful" to "actively harmful", in my opinion.

so when I am talking about zoosadism or whatever I am simply specific and don't just say paraphilia.

Once you've learned the spot the historical signposts, it's interesting how many "generically medieval" fantasy settings manage to miss the actual medieval period on both ends. They've got the Roman Empire rubbing shoulders with the German Renaissance, skipping directly from the year 500 to the year 1500 with nothing in between!

(The one consistent exception is, of course, the obligatory Vikings-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off culture, who legitimately are medieval, but nobody they interact with is, so you've effectively got Vikings with time-travelling boats raiding both Roman-occupied England and Renaissance Italy.)

I mean, yeah, valid! but but but I also want to add on the fact that lotr AGGRESSIVELY rejects the “grimdark” and “gritty” settings that is so prevalent in fantasy (and also in general) right now, because I physically can not shut up about it

It is hope and love and compassion that saves each character individually, and because of that, the world. Frodo fails in the end, but his acts of compassion from earlier in the story save the day. And even as the world is saved, it is acknowledged that Frodo failed—without judgement, without blame. He fails, and he is still loved.

And like what can happen in the real world, he is still irrevocably changed by his trauma. But there is still hope—he has to leave, but he leaves with the promise of healing, and the promise that his ever-faithful Sam will follow.

Aragorn, Boromir, Frodo, Sam; each and every one of the characters are driven by their love of the people around them and their hope for the future. They cling to that love and hope throughout their trials, and that bears them through.

Of course people are watching it for comfort!!!! Lotr is eternally consistent in its promise, which Sam articulates so clearly in The Two Towers: “Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer.”

Things are dark and awful and terrible, but it will not be that way forever. That is the promise of LOTR. A promise of hope, and the reminder that it is love and compassion—for our friends, for our families, for the strangers we’ve never even met—that will save us in the end.
