I'm not in the headspace to actually make a cohesive rules page, so please assume all the same rules as my OC's blog, which can be located  here.

I'm not interested in discourse or ship wars and will not be partaking in it.   As a writer, I simply enjoy most of the relationships represented in the show as material to dissect and study as part of human nature.   Or whatever.   With that being said, please do  not  come to my inbox telling me a certain ship is better than another.   I do not give a flying, driving, carpooling, bus riding, Ubering/Lyfting fuck.   Thank you so much!

Please don't be weird.   No force-shipping.   I will say I'm  very  open to shipping Theo with your muses but like, chemistry, y'know.   Anyway, feel free to send shippy ask memes/starters to test said chemistry and we'll go from there, thank you.

Given that this is a canonical character, I've refrained from really creating a lot of purely original content on this blog  aside from, of course, the actual in character writing and the headcanons on this blog.   You can assume most things are quotes from the show or another form of literature unless stated otherwise, with the exception of again what's written in a thread between my partners and I.   I did make the PSD I use, and I also made the graphics but obviously I'm not affiliated with the show or base images I used.   However, I did make the screencaps from the show as well.

GENDER / PRONOUNS.   Cisgender man, he/him SEXUALITY.   Unlabeled. TITLE.   Duke of Tintagel LOCATION.   Can travel, but defaults to Cornwall, England. COMMON WHEREABOUTS.   His castle, his art studio on castle grounds, at the beach near the castle, can travel to other places depending upon plot and verse.

Jacquetta smiled softly. How could she answer that? She adored James, but their union hadn’t been a love match, and both were aware of that. He had become her best friend, and she was proud to stand beside him. She wasn’t in love so that ache people would talk about loosing the love of their life wasn’t there, but there was an ache. She was not as used to this world and now she had to navigate alone. She was worried she wouldn’t be able to with James.

She more mourned she guessed, for the loss a friend, the father to her child, who would have no memory of his father, and the certainty it would all be alright. She however was not one to sit and cry, not when there were things to do, so she would put on her bravest face, smile through it and protect not just her son’s title, but his inheritance. That was her priority. He would always come first

ENGLISH SOCIETY IS PARTICULARLY UNRELIABLE WHEN IT COMES TO SINCERITY.   even in matters of tragedy,  it's obligation they follow when it comes to expressing their condolence.   theo was od enough to remember his own father's funeral and the month that followed,  when men and their wives or fellow widows would visit the castle to express their apologies to his mother,  but his mother had taught him enough about etiquette to know that these well wishes are  rarely  meant.   very few things in this society are sincere,  theo knows that too well.

this particular tragedy,  however,  is close to home for theo.   james was one of his oldest friends,  he would often visit the castle for events and they would even reunite at guy's own home for the labyrinth.   he missed playing poker,  the games,  the banter.   he missed his friend,  and so he sought the only company who knew him just as well,  which was none other than james's own wife.

he nods at her response.     ❝  i'm sorry i didn't visit sooner,  ❞   he says,  lips flattened in a line as he found himself in thought for a moment.   ❝  i miss him as well.   how is the new lord?   if you'd like,  i can help with the transition.   i was a bit older than him when i had to become duke.   i'm sure my mother would love to help you,  as well,  and inform you of the best steps to take for your son.  ❞

the  sea  beckoned.  she  longed  to  disappear  in  it.  away  from  expectation,  from  reason,  from  the  importance  of  class.  her  sister  excelled  at  pretending  to  be  happy  in  a  loveless  marriage.  silver  linings  were  kate's  nieces  and  nephews.  but  susan  had  been  pretending  a  long  time,  so  long,  she'd  forgotten  what  it  felt  like  to  love.  kate  didn't  want  that,  she  didn't  want  to  be  like  that.  she  didn't  want  to  be  trapped  like  her  sister.

“sometimes,  there  is  no  choice,"  there  is  acknowledgement  of  his  status,  of  hers,  weddings  of  necessity.  some  favored  other  people's  fantasies.  “my  mother.  my  sister.  they  didn't  get  to  choose.”  would  she?  an  upheld  fantasy  might  waver  behind  castle  walls.  “they  told  me  that  falling  in  love  is  a  luxury.”  but  she  didn't  care  about  titles.  she  wanted  to  jump  into  the  ocean.  she  wanted  to  be  free.

it  should  come  naturally,  she  agreed  with  him  wholeheartedly  -  the  gentle  squeeze  served  as  an  anchor,  and  she  was  grateful  for  his  soft  hold.  she  felt  at  any  moment,  she  could  tip  over  and  dive  into  the  water.  with  theo's  tether  to  her,  she  was  grounded. 

“is  anyone?”  the  sea's  in  her  eyes  -  she  glances  back  towards  him,  “an  expert?  does  anyone  really  know?”

EXPECTATIONS PLAGUE THEM BOTH.   this,  he is fully aware.   while theo should be  grateful  of the privilege his status brings him,  he is also aware of the chains they come with.   everything must look presentable,  must shine the right way under the light.   it gets exhausting,  being someone people look to in any way.   even in regards to love and marriage,  he hardly gets a say.   every now and then,  his mother would attempt to push prospects onto him.   she's a nice girl from a respectable family,  she would say as she would fix his tie.   but theo doesn't care for being with  just  a nice girl from a respectable family.   he wants someone who can make him laugh,  make his heart fill with joy,  who he could devote his life trying to do the same for.

kate's words pull him out of the thought.   sometimes,  there is no choice.   a scoff in derision passes his lips.   he doesn't let go of his hold on kate,  but he runs his free hand over the sand.     ❝  how ironic.   the one luxury we want,  people like us can't usually afford,  ❞   he says with a chuckle.   ❝  i'm fairly certain the only experts are the people who could choose who they want to spend their lives with.   so,  no one we know,  i imagine.  ❞

he looks over at her then and he can't help but wonder if she could be happy in a place like this.   tied to a title,  to responsibilities.   but with him.   he decides not to push his luck.   instead,  he recognizes the longing for the sea in her eyes.   a smile reaches his own,  some form of recognition.     ❝  i'm completely biased but the beach here is the best.   wanna go for a swim?  ❞

tommy  always  felt  out  of  place  at  parties  -  he  never  had  the  chance  to  acclimate  to  them.  since  childhood,  he'd  been  left  out  of  the  joke,  odd  man  out  at  every  social  function.  since  time  spent  in  the  institution,  he  got  more  lingering  stares  from  those  talking  in  groups  than  he  felt  comfortable. 

theo  had  been  nice,  and  engaging.  maybe  the  solace  that  came  from  meeting  the  young  duke  was  discovering  how  much  like  pariahs  they  both  felt.  around  him,  tommy  didn't  feel  like  an  outcast.  he  felt  their  paths  were  parallel.

as  it  was,  they  were  standing  on  the  same  side  of  the  room,  while  the  partygoers  gossiped,  casting  glances  back  over  their  shoulders  every  so  often.

he  thought  about  when  he  lost  breath  underwater  -  no  voices,  no  sounds.  that  had  felt  the  closest  to  safety.  death  had  felt  the  closest  to  safety.  nobody  around  to  poison  his  mind  further,  he  was  already  gone. 

he  hadn't  realized  he'd  said  it  out  loud.  but  he'd  been  nursing  brews  along  with  theo  when  the  words  ran  rampant  from  his  mouth.  but  theo  hadn't  judged  him  this  whole  night.  he  meets  the  other's  gaze,  it  doesn't  feel  like  curiosity,  it  feels  like  genuine  intrigue. 

“it's  quiet,”  he  doesn't  have  to  shut  his  eyes  to  recall  the  memory,  “all  the  sounds  fading.  you  cant  hear  anything.  but  you  can  still  see  your  life  bleeding  away.  it  happened  slow.  i  was  drowning,  and  when  i  woke  up,  it  didn't  feel  like  it  happened  to  me  at  all.  felt  like  a  bad  dream.”

he  turns  away  from  the  watchful  eyes,  offers  them  his  spine  to  stare  daggers  into,  “do  you  ever  think  about  dying,  theo?”

EVERYWHERE HE WENT,  HIS STATUS FOLLOWED.   even here,  at university.   the dean and professors were all too eager to announce the presence of a duke among them,  as if he were some sort of movie star.   but soon enough,  whatever  novelty  being a duke had on his peers wore off,  and he was left alone.   unlike guy,  theo didn't fancy himself as a good entertainer.   he didn't exactly know how to be interesting.   he could be a good host,  a good duke.   he could provide.   but he didn't find himself particularly fascinating because he never had to be.   here,  it was different.

he brings the red plastic cup to his lips as he listens to tommy speak.    it's a vulnerable topic.   he has to admit that what has really impressed him about americans,  or maybe just those outside of his social circle growing up,  is their ability to say what's on their mind.   even if the topic is as heavy as death.   if his mother were to overhear their conversation,  she would advise him to change the subject.   to wait until he was better friends with his current company.

but she's not here,  and  theo does want to talk about it.   how odd it is to feel safer about revealing thoughts he never shared to someone who barely knows him.   maybe it's because tommy doesn't really know him that makes it easier to say things he never thought he could.

❝  that sounds intense,  ❞   he says.   is this how he imagined death?   people always talk about heaven and hell,  but what if it's just this?   life slipping through your fingers until there's nothing.     ❝  any idea how you got out?  ❞

his shoulders merely shrug when the question gets turned to him.   he looks up at the ceiling for a moment,  thinking.     ❝  i wouldn't say i've thought about it,  no.   not the actual dying part.   i've considered faking my own death,  though.   when i was younger,  before i went to college.  ❞   sometime after his father died.     ❝  everyone thinks being a duke is all fun and games,  which to be fair,  does involve that sometimes.   but there's also a lot of expectations,  and i sometimes can't help but wonder what it'd be like to be  free  to do what i want.  ❞

a  soft  laugh  leaves  the  soprano  as  she  raises  a  hand  &*  fixes  a  errant  strand  of  his  hair.        too  personal  of  a  thing  for  some  dainty  dame  of  the  ton  ,  but  less  intimate  than  the  fondling  some  of  the  other  girls  about  the  room  are  doing.       she  glances  towards  amalie  ,  her  fellow  alto  ,  who  has  her  hand  under  one  man's  lapel  to  tease  fingernails  against  his  collarbone.       he  is  enamored  ,  so  the  touch  is  worth  it.         ❛    i'm  siena  ,  by  the  way.      s'pose  my  names  on  the  boards  ,  but    . . .     can't  say  everyone  pays  attention  to  that.        pleasure  to  meet  you  ,  mister    . . .    ?      ❜

POLITENESS HAS LED HIM TO WORSE CIRCUMSTANCES.   he maintains the kindness as he listens to her speak,  explaining the frequency of her performances.   while theo is quite accustomed to holding a woman's attention,  it feels a bit different here.   the women who expect his attention back home could never be so forthcoming.     ❝  i can imagine.   i mean,  i'm sure using your voice at such a capacity could only strain it.   you're quite talented,  though.   i'm sure this opera is very happy to have you.  ❞

it quickly becomes apparent what her interaction with him is about the moment her hand brushes against his hair,  like she's fixing something.   he can't help but allow his glance to travel around the room,  particularly to another woman who was flirting with a man who,  much like him,  is sat on a lounge chair.   except,  the man the other woman is with seems to be  perfectly aware  of the kind of  post-show service  the ladies offer.   theo's eyes return to siena's,  maintaining his politeness.   now,  he's curious about her and how exactly these actions help.     ❝  theo.   pleased to make your acquaintance,  siena.   have you been doing this long?  ❞

what a cruel trick it was, to gift her with both genius and the distaste for it all. alice thinks it's a waste on her, better suited for a well-mannered lady who would enjoy the stage and comply with all it requires. being a part of this takes something out of her – every note eats at her soul a little bit more each time – but there's such few ways to get by in the world, at least not without money or titles to her name or the charm to make up for it. genius will have to do for now, however temporary it may be.

she'd resent theo for having lucked out, if she didn't find him the least bit pleasant. if he weren't, it would be a much more painful event than it already is. perhaps, like all those invaluable trinkets she's pocketed from this house on sheer compulsion, they are both merely ornaments. decorative, at best. "i've been considering the options. my private pieces likely aren't suited to anyone's taste here – but i'm wondering if they might all drop dead if they hear it." what a morbid thought, alice couldn't get away with that sort of joke in any other company. even with the duke, she's not entirely sure if it's appropriate.

back to theo, and to his offer. tempting, but likely irresponsible for them both. and nit to mention, naive to think it'll go unnoticed. "i don't think your house guests will take kindly to it. they actually might have to stand and listen to themselves talk."

HE SHOULD CONSIDER HIMSELF LUCKY   that his talent is  nothing  compared to his title.   no one around them seems to be interested in the way the duke likes to spend his time.   these parties are a mere obligation,  but they are not all he does.   in the same regard,  he should consider himself lucky that he's not quite good at it,  and that his mother at least respects that he would not like for his art to be displayed.   the last thing he would ever want is to be sitting at parties,  painting whatever scenery's deemed appropriate by the host.   no,  the title of genius would never belong to him in the way it does for alice and the other great artists of their time.

he chuckles at the thought of everyone dropping dead as he looks around the room.   if he were to be honest,  he's almost certain someone would try to poison them all if it benefitted them.   he's surprised no one's tried yet.   but he doesn't say it aloud,  considering how inappropriate it is for a duke to think this way.   he,  of all people in this room,  is meant to be a  man of the people.   instead,  he holds a barrier between them,  for they represent the cage he's trapped in.

❝  you're right,  of course,  ❞   he says,  plucking a couple wine-filled glasses from the servant's tray.   he gives them a bow and a smile,  polite as ever before offering the other glass to alice.     ❝  i can't imagine what sort of  fascinating  conversations they'd actually be having,  but it's probably better no one hears a word of it either way.   just do me a favour and don't play any slow songs,  alright?   i do not feel like dancing tonight.  ❞

jacquetta walked around her large home, feelings its emptiness more than ever. of course she had dozens of servants, her mother had come to stay with her, she had her young son, but she still felt alone. it had james that made this a home. his warmth, kindness, and humor. he hadn't just been her husband, he had been her greatest friend. she had no idea what to do now. not only she was lady covington, and her son would be..no he was the baron. just three years old and he was a baron. how could she help him? she had no idea what to do

she decided to sit in her drawing room, knitting and drinking some tea. she was tired, but it wasn't from lack of sleep, it was from.. just from life. she hadn't made a stitch in what seemed like hours, when her butler came in ❝my lady the duke of tintagel is here❞ she straightened up

theo had been her husband good friend, and she had met him many times over the last few years. they had not been close, but the way her husband had spoke of him, there was no one he trusted more. he was a good and honorable man, according to james. if he came here, it was probably to see how she was faring, which brought some comfort. he wasn't here because it was expected and for optics. as he was shown in, she nodded ❝my lord, welcome.❞ her maid went to get more tea ❝please make yourself comfortable❞

THEO IS ALL TOO FLUENT IN TRAGEDIES.   his own father had died when he was young,  and he was  fully unprepared  to take on the role of  duke.   if he were to be honest,  he thought he'd have more time to enjoy his freedom the way his other titled friends and associates had.   attending operas,  drinking in pubs,  playing poker while discussing current affairs.   but he knows he shouldn't be complaining.   he's lucky,  most people are not.   he at least has his mother,  and despite the limitations the life she provides for him have,  he knows she means well.   she,  at least,  has had plenty of time to prepare for her role as a duchess.   unlike the company he's seeking.

james had been a dear friend to him,  often finding themselves in each other's company during the events their parents would host as they grew up.   of course,  not much has changed in adulthood,  until james's sudden passing.   it broke his heart in a way he suspects it always hurts to lose a friend.   and he could only imagine how lady jacquetta must feel.   alone with a child and a whole estate,  along with their servants,  to manage.   and so,  he decides to pay the mother and child a visit.

he was led to the baroness immediately upon arriving.   he thanks the butler who leads him to the drawing room,  as well as the maid who leaves to fetch what he can only assume to be refreshments.   he offers jacquetta a polite smile before giving her a respectful bow.     ❝  thank you.   i hope you don't mind the intrusion.   i just wanted to see how you were after everything.  ❞     he looks at her then,  gaze meeting hers.     ❝  if it's not a foolish question,  how have you been?  ❞
