Hilary Mason

Hilary Mason is a data scientist and founder of Fast Forward labs. She has worked as a data scientist at bitly and also founded a hackspace in New York City, HackNY. She’s received many honors for her work in tech, including a spot on the Forbes 40 under 40.

Emmy Noether

Emmy Noether was a German mathematician in the early 20th century. Her contributions to mathematics and theoretical physics are numerous, and perhaps her best known and most important is Noether’s Theorem, which laid the groundwork for Einstein’s theory of relativity. When she was a professor at an esteemed college there was objection to a woman lecturing mathematics and thus many of her lectures were given under a male advisor’s name.

Maia Dua

At 16, Maia Dua won an engineering contest for her invention, a “seeing eye robot.” The robot is a low-cost replacement for seeing eye dogs that help the visually impaired, which has the potential to vastly improve the lives and mobility of visually impaired people who do not have the resources to own a seeing eye dog. The robot uses echo location to gather information about its surroundings and notifies the user when it’s about to run into something. It took her four days to build

Winry Rockbell

Winry Rockbell is an automail engineer and mechanic in the fictional universe of Fullmetal Alchemist. She has a passion for mechanics and is shown to work hard in her pursuit of becoming a better mechanic and engineer. She is inspired by her parents, who were medical doctors killed while serving as medics in war, to help people. She also serves as love interest of the protagonist of the series, Edward Elric, although their relationship is shown to be one of mutual respect and support. In fact Edward admires and encourages her passion for engineering.

Jane Fawcett

Jane Fawcett was a British codebreaker. Though she spent most of her life as either an opera singer or a heritage preservationist, during World War II she worked as part of a group of codebreaker women known as the “Debs of Bletchley Park.” She chose to join this effort at age 18 instead of becoming a debutante as her parents wanted.

Amelia Greenhall

Amelia Greenhall is a tech blogger who has worked as a UI/UX designer. She is the co-founder of the publication Model View Culture.

Sophie Germain

Sophie Germain was a French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher. As a child, she was inspired by Archimedes to study mathematics. Because she was a woman she was unable to attend a university, so instead she obtained lecture notes from Ecole Polytechnique which helped her gain mentorship from Josph Louis Lagrange. She is perhaps best known for her work in proving Fermat’s Last Theorem.

Welcome to Great Women of Stem. My goal at this blog is to showcase women and girls who are doing amazing things in STEM fields. I’ve posted spontaneously up to this point, but starting next week there will five posts a week.

R2G2

R2G2 (Robots, Rockets, Girls and Griffins) is a an all-girls rocketry team. They are one of only a few all-girls team attending the national Team America Rocketry Challenge in Washington DC next month.

Yukako Fukushima

Yukako Fukushima is a prosthetics maker who specializes in making prosthetic fingers for former yakuza members in Japan. She’s made hundreds of fingers over the last ten years. Despite the fact that many owners of these prosthetic digits have relapsed into organized crime, she thinks even helping a small percent of the people who visit her rebuild their lives is reason to continue.

Grace Brewster Murray Hopper was an American computer programmer and an admiral in the US navy. She invented the world’s first compiler for programming languages and paved the way for the invention of COBOL.
