As a trans man who has had people accuse him of transitioning for a better life (male privelage) or because I thought women couldn't ve masculine (I'm androgyne anyway?) I didn't realise that male privelage and misogyny was affecting so much of my outed/pre transition life until after I started interacting with people who didn't know I was trans.

I'm kind of chubby, so my whole life I've been bullied for being fat. I'm an immigrant and have an accent so I've been told I'm stupid and had grades taken away because I was "misbehaving".

But after, when I went to a school where no one knew, and walked around in public and was gendered correctly every time? I'm even more heavily feminist and outraged than I was before. I'm no longer always fat, sometimes just "big" or "strong". No longer always dumb or stupid but sometimes "so courageous" for learning a new language. The ones who know I'm trans still call me fat and dumb, but to everyone else's utter confusion. It's so insulting.

When I'm "male" I'm nearly human, but when I'm "pretending" I'm worse than scum, even when I was fully feminine. Even when I was a full cis-presenting human being, happy and smart and healthy, who was a girl, I was committing the biggest crime of all by existing.

Before I was out I wasn't told I was lying much by medical professionals, though it still happened, but after I transitioned no one would believe me about anything (let alone doctors), not even being thristy or needing to go to the bathroom. Apparently girls are dumb, but confused girls are subhuman.

However, when people knew me both pre and post transition, I was treated the worst. How horrible, indeed, that I was A Trans. How horrible that this beautiful and smart girl (though even then I was seen by them as not) became an ugly dumb man-thing (though everyone sees me as the opposite). When I am male, almost human. When female, the worst crime. And trans masculine, a horrible horrendous fate, such a terrible tragedy, a cruel choice.

All of this to say, transandrophobia and misogyny can go hand in hand, but no one is saying their problems retract from anyone else's. Just because I experienced these things does not mean that it's "worse" to be a trans man than a woman. It doesn't mean it's better either. I do not see myself as a woman but that doesn't stop them from seeing me that way.

We are all fucked when it comes to being treated as humans, so let us at least hold hands and fight together. I'm sure you've heard this message many times over, but I felt the need to express it.

The thing is, even if a trans man passes 100% as cis and has fully medically transitioned and is as stealth as he possibly can be that doesn't erase his childhood. It doesn't erase the fact that for a lot of girl children their first instance of sexual harassment happens before the age of 14. Or the fact that no matter how young he came out for some part of his life he was being raised with the expectations of being a girl who would grow up into a woman. Denying a trans man that is an act of violence. We are not cis men. We do not have the same life experience or privileges as cis men. We can obtain a level of male privilege in adulthood by hiding who we are if we're lucky enough to pass perfectly and stay in the closet but it is materially not the same.
