My love for pre-accident Danny is through the roof. He's just a kid. His parents are the laughingstock of the town. He's bullied. He's so loved, but that doesn't always translate to immediate social comfort. His friends think his parents' job is lame but they like him anyway. They're going to play video games together after school. He goes to class every day, and has homework tonight. His sister is annoying but that's part of her charm. His parents are working on a new project. That has nothing to do with him. He's going to find out what's for dinner tonight when they're done working. They built him a suit so that he can be involved with their work, but they don't force their interests on him. He wants to be an astronaut. This doesn't have an end date. Yes it does.

He doesn't know what's at the bottom of the ravine. He puts on a suit and he's careful, but nothing's ever happened to him before. He's a normal kid with normal hobbies and he's going to school tomorrow morning. His homework is half-done on his desk. He puts his hand on the wall as he walks in, unable to see. He's human. He can't see in the dark. There's nothing at the end of the tunnel but the dead end of the lab. It's just a non-functional machine. He's not scared. He doesn't know that he's about to be changed.

Danny finds that taking walks helps him clear his head and actually think things through properly. And yeah, Gotham’s not the safest place to do that in (especially with his night-owl habits), but the improvements to his functionality are well worth it. His life is a lot more put together now that he’s moved out for college and is retired from vigilantism, and he wants to keep it that way.

But he keeps seeing other people being targeted by criminals. And when that happens, he can’t just stand by.

So he steps in to help, like any good samaritan would. It’s no big deal, really.

…Huh, neat, there’s rumors of a new vigilante going ‘round on the news. Good on them for stepping up to protect people!

He wonders offhandedly if he’s ever passed them by on one of his strolls. Nah, probably not.
