Caramel coloring is one of the oldest food additives and is found widespread in products like soft drinks, breads, deli meats, liquors, donuts, candy, cookies, ice cream, bouillon, beer, pudding, batters, breading, and more. Caramel coloring is made when sugars are combined under high pressure and high temperatures with ammonia and sulfites. The product of this chemical reaction is 4-methylimdazole. 4-methylimdazole, or 4-MeI, caused lung, liver, and/or thyroid cancer, and/or leukemia in government conducted studies on rats. For this reason the state of California requires manufacturers to label a product sold there with a cancer warning if it exposes consumers to more than 29 micrograms of 4-MeI per day. Many common cans of sodas exceed this limit. The FDA, however, has approved caramel as a color additive and lists it as a "generally recognized as safe" food ingredient. Cancer and leukemia? Safe? All in the name of making a food look a certain way? Sounds about as healthy and logical as tanning beds. If you are looking to avoid this ingredient please note that manufacturers can use the general term “artificial color” interchangeably with “caramel color" on food labels.

I confess: I was craving one of my favorite casseroles and so despite all the reasons I normally don't purchase things like this, I bought it and ate it and enjoyed every second of it. It's hard to be perfect. It's hard to make educated food choices and be completely non-gmo, completely organic, completely anything. Every choice has a consequence and sometimes it seems impossible to do the right thing. It can be overwhelming to be an educated consumer. Sally and I are here to remind you that it's ok not to be perfect. It's ok to buy non-organic items. It's ok to make good food decisions most of the time, to eat out at a restaurant and ingest gmos and fried food on occasion. Turnips are rich in Vitamin C and fiber. They contain a type of phytonutrient called indioles which may help protect against certain types of cancers. The International Journal of Oncology reported that indioles killed human colon cancer cells in a tissue study. Turnips also contain calcium, potassium, and magnesium. My wonderful friend did something nice today that is really simple and inexpensive! As he was driving to work he had to stop for a construction site. He couldn't help but notice the workers holding the Stop/Slow signs, how cold they looked. He had passed by them a few times that week on his way to work, and thought how uncomfortable and bored he might be if he was doing that job. He decided to do something nice just for the sake of doing something nice. He brought them some hot coffee and a smile. Practicing random acts of kindness is good for you and good for the world! (Wikipedia) Consider your choices when you buy Halloween candy this year. Most of the familiar big chocolate companies (including Nestle's, Hershey's, and Mars) knowingly make billions of dollars at the expense of innocent children. (Hershey's says it will end the practice of supporting child slavery by 2020....) Consider buying Fair Trade or organic candies. Organic farms are subject to independent monitoring that check labor practices, and organic cocoa beans aren't typically grown on the Ivory Coast where the vast majority of child slavery takes place. It may be more expensive but please remember that chocolate is a luxury item. It is not a necessity. Freedom should not be a luxury.

It's called COVVHA and was founded by children of Vietnam Veterans who were born with and live with debilitating birth defects that Agent Orange is presumed to have caused. The second and third generational victims are rarely recognized and this group works to change that and offer support to populations all over the world. They believe in empowering each other to hold the companies and governments responsible for causing so much devastation and suffering accountable for their actions. Monsanto, one of the producers of Agent Orange, and the giver of other gifts like GMO foods, says the following about Agent Orange and victims seeking justice from its affects: "While a causal connection linking Agent Orange to chronic disease in humans has not been established, some governments have made the decision to provide certain medical benefits to veterans and their families even though there has not been a determination that an individual’s health problem was caused by Agent Orange." I wouldn't expect them to be the first to admit Genetically Modified Food is a bad deal for the world either.
