A Very Important Headcanon

So in Undertale…

There is the Annoying Dog. It causes a lot of mischief and pops up all the time in inconvenient places and bothers the hell out of you, but it still manages to be a lovable scamp.

And in Underswap, it’s the Affectionate Dog– it’s very helpful and if he’s inconvenient, it’s only because he wants to love on you all the time! Very hard to shake when he’s in the mood to cuddle in your lap, and that’s all the time.

In Underfell, it’s the Aggressive Dog. It barks a lot and might bite if you get too close, but it’s very protective once it’s decided it likes you. Then, it’ll only bite other people who get close to you!

In Horrortale, it is…or maybe isn’t? Absent Dog.  Nobody’s sure where it went, or if it’s still alive? You certainly haven’t seen it, though sometimes you might see some evidence that it may have been around… There’s just no way to know for sure.

Now, Swapfell posed the real challenge because I know exactly what it’s like but couldn’t think of a proper A-word title for it…so I’ve decided to cheat.

In Swapfell, it’s yAndere Dog– it loves you and only you and it likes to watch you sleep and follows you around and it… well, it might bite you… But it’s just because! It just loves you! So, so, so much!!!

The heights of the Gasters in my fic ‘Irresponsible Dimensional Alignment’.

I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS FAMILY PORTRAIT FOR AGES. Oh GAWD have I ever been working on it. It’s still not complete, but I’ve had some degree of progress over the . . holy crap nearly a year. Ten months at the very least.

Definitely doesn’t help I have the mental focus of a hamster sometimes. The last picture is my current progress.

In RP, Trister’s timeline has gradually gained a collection of refugees and visitors from other timelines - it’s chaotic, at times dangerous, but many of them are family.

Things Trister Has Done

Wandered into the dreams of the dead. They don’t like doing this, but it seems to happen every time they’re badly hurt themselves. The implications of that are something they don’t like to think about.

The duo actually have regular appointments with some Gasters from other timelines - in that those Gasters will drop in on a specific date and time for physical therapy, healing, and after a few decades of training, therapeutic massage. Between their rather high baseline strength and strong healing ability, they’re quite good at gradually correcting old wounds or bone damage. Can’t heal it up, but can definitely improve quality of life.

Made hops across timelines to go make sure somebody actually took care of themselves.  This has included pouring soup into someone and making sure they took a nap.

Walked in on sex dreams. And usually walked right back out.

Evacuated a timeline, which has happened three times. Once a subspecies of monster or almost all of them, once an entire Underground, and once . . . well, the survivors.

Random Crazy Ebbotton Stuff

The Annual Nyargh Run~! As one of the timeline refugee locations, there’s multiple Undynes and Papyruses (Papyri?) with an excess of energy. Every year there’s a race from one end of town to the other, with clearly marked roads set aside for the route - and the route is changed each year. 

Roughly every fifth or sixth year is really hyped up as the one to visit for tourists - it’s the one where the Undyne-alternates and Papyrus-alternates that chose to settle in other countries come back to run in. The tourism it rakes in far outweighs the cost in reconstruction from the race.

50/50 ratio of motorcycles/mopeds/bicycles to cars, not counting the proliferation of Bikeshaws (a cart with seats pulled by bicycle, motorcycle, or moped). With a great deal of the monster population uncomfortable or unable to fit in conventional cars, alternative travel is very popular.

Retrofit Labs is the hub for recycling goods. Electric, metal scrap, old porcelain dolls, as long as it’s not compost fodder they can do something with it. The Labs also give regular lessons on how to properly make compost without it exploding.

It’s right next to Joe’s House Of Stuff. Which is a backyard engineer’s dream shop. Or any sort of crafter or artist’s dream.

Ethnic restaurants and stores are everywhere, both surface and underground cultures. Ebbotton is a hotbed of cultural/social acceptance despite the efforts of a tiny portion of the population.

Snowbun Farms is the main producer of the town’s fresh produce. This set of local farms are crazy productive, being both close to the giant reservoir of natural magic that is the Ebbotton Underground and tended by Rabbit Monsters.

Every summer the rollerskates come out of the closet, and practically anybody can be seen rolling around town rather than driving a vehicle or riding a bike. Asked why, and any roller will just shrug and say they tried it ‘cause everyone else was, and it turned out a lot more fun than they thought!

Partnertale: Monster Magic Vs Human Magic

What the hell is going on with magic in this timeline?

It’s pretty simple at the root - souls produce magic. What’s weird about Partnertale is that Monster and Humans produce magic in two distinct forms. To sum up those capabilities, I’ll list them loosely below.

Monsters can use magic:

Actively:

Producing bullets

Magical attacks

Healing rapidly

Making purely magical food

Imbuing physical food with magic

Summons - this is not typical of any monster other than Boss Monsters

Passively:

Manifesting their bodies

Manipulating a home element of the world in subtle ways. A pond with a Froggit will always have a certain level of robust health to it, as long as the Froggit is hale and healthy.

The home of the monster will always reflect their general health, both mental and emotional.

Humans can use magic:

Actively:

Performing minor or greater miracles under extreme duress.

Calling BULLSHIT on death - the human capacity for survival is terrifying.

Passively:

Curses

Healing

Blessings

Defilement

Manipulation of their environment on a subtle and instinctive level (example, Feng Shui).

Partnertale & Alternate History

Been a while! But believe me, Partnertale is still alive and well!

(despite canonically going to have an invasion of an army [REDACTED] at some point)

Onwards to the topic!

So, I haven’t explicitly stated it, so I’m going to do that now - Partnertale is set in an Alternate History.

A lot of the things that happened in the real world did happen there - World Wars 1 & 2, the colonization of America, general colonization of the world, the Black Plague, science advancement . . . it’s the time scales on these things that changed, for some.

Colonization happened earlier, with some of it being cued by Monsters fleeing their homelands - with magic, it becomes easier to travel and survive the traveling. This has resulted in some alterations to some human ethnicity, but nothing major. The most dramatic change is some native groups in Africa will have the odd descendant with blue or red eyes naturally.

Scientific advancement was semi-stagnant before the barrier - with magic, monster and mixed communities thrived with much more ease than pure human ones. Discoveries were made, it’s just a lot get shelved because they weren’t as efficient as using magic. This is one of the leverages used by the Seven Virtues to raise tension between the humans and monsters. After the barrier, technology advanced pretty much on the same path and time scale as it did in real life.

The Black Plague was just as destructive to the population of the world as it was in the Real World. It happened a bit later, is all. Less than a century after the Barrier was sealed.

America and Europe actually have more diverted cultures - linguistically English between the two countries has diverged more than it has in the real world. So has Australia, for that matter, with the continent being colonized earlier by a few centuries (it was still a prison colony though).

‘The Guardians Of The Gate Of Seven Virtues’

Otherwise known as ‘The Seven Virtues’.

One of the most prominent, ill-documented, and thankfully dead cults of Trist’s timeline.

The Seven Virtues were a cult that developed a very long time ago, and it is unknown how long they existed - other than clearly for at least a few centuries before the Human-Monster war. It is known that they believed that Humanity was the ‘proper heirs of the world’ that ‘should ascend to the great beauty beyond the endless emptiness of the world’s end’ at a specific time of year, during a certain year yet to come.

Unfortunately more specific knowledge of their beliefs is impossible, as they burned as much of their own literature as part of their final ritual. What is known is a series of activities verified as theirs before the final one.

Sending off splinters of their cult to ‘sanctify’ various mountains with caves around the world - on just the faith that their elders said the mountains would be there. There would be a yearly rite cast somewhere on the mountain, usually at the entrance to a cave system. This was happening up to three centuries before the war at one of the oldest sites according to carbon testing of the archaeological finds. 

The Seven Virtues were infiltrating and influencing courts for centuries as well, triggering off small conflicts and steadily amping up tensions between Humanity and Monsters

This came to a head in what became known as the Monster-Human War, despite being instead of one war, it was a series of wars overlapping as the violence spilled out from the originating places. Through the Seven Virtues influences behind the scenes, this all came to a head within a few months before their ‘preordained date of destiny’.

Each branch of the cult went out to their mountain/cave system, and did a ‘Final Rite of Ascending Destiny’. There are only a few things known about this rite:

There were no surviving members of the Cult at each site.

Each mountain/cave system then sent out an unconscious, constant pull that spread out over huge ranges, size seemingly dependent on how many years/how many cultists were involved in the final rite. 

On the Winter Solstice, the Barrier went up at all these sites around the world.

All activity that could be attributed to the Seven Virtues effectively disappears, and the few small splinter sects die out or disband within a few decades.

Grillern ‘Grillby’ Phaze

Grillby was ‘born’ just a few years before the barrier, and due to circumstances of the war ended up both an orphan and artificially accelerated halfway through his childhood by the time he was sealed behind the barrier with his siblings.  In that time he’s fallen in love (it confused him), been soulbonded (which also confused him), and ended up heartbroken, severing the bond - then raising his former bond’s children himself a decade later.

Yeah, he’s pretty emotionally and mentally screwed up.

But on the Surface, he not only has a new and bigger bar (with additional staff), he’s got three Partners to help him sort out his head and soul. Between them and his open policy for any customer that doesn’t make trouble, his bar has become a hopping hotspot for the local queer community. He’s taken to wearing an Ace pin on his vest to cut down on the amount of blatant flirting directed at him.

Washington Underground

Brigitte Rumpepper

Brigitte is a pre-war fire elemental, one of a not-so-powerful line, but a sociable one. Well-socialized, she risks living in the Echo Marsh of her Underground, patrolling daily simply for the thrill of it and love of the people. While she was the only elemental to safely make it into this Underground, she’s far from the only elemental there now - she’s had two Grand Summers, and happily counting down the months to her next on the Surface now.

In the meantime, she mothers  the new Risen still happening in the Marsh, making daily visits down to check for new ones before returning to the Surface to help take care of the ones already there. As a side business she brews and ships various artisan alcohols, catering more to the whiskey and rum lovers in the area - and flirting with Comic ‘Sans’ Aster, who runs the bar that sells the largest portion of her booze.

Visually she’s cultivated having very ample curves to go with her feminine-presenting preferences, and is a light purple flame with yellow-to-white edges.

Eire Underground

Grannus ‘Grillby’ Inferi

This ice-blue flame is something considered almost an abomination by pre-war elemental standards - he’s a hybrid offspring of a Fire elemental and a Boss ice monster. Results? A very untypical Grand Elemental with an incredibly high resistance to water and ice. Even as a small child this flame was incredibly dangerous.

Considering his infamy, none were surprised when out of boredom he opened a bar in the coldest, wettest part of the Underground, saying it made for better atmosphere. At the very least it made for better chances to get in fights. But as the only local place to get hot food and drinks at any time, he kept his clientele.

And then Jack and Jillaine set out to seduce him, and Grannus discovered an all new side to his fascination with pain.  With the volatile elemental ‘collared’ and in a stable relationship, he’s got an outlet for his urge for violence and pain - as well as the children he wanted but thought were impossible due to his mixed lineage.

(On the surface, he’s running a Dungeon that caters to both humans and Monsters)

Russian Underground

Ogon

When your home is perpetually cold, if not outright freezing most of the year, being made of fire becomes a very important blessing. Ogon is the head of a small family of fire elementals, generally regarded as the most Essential Treasure of their Underground. This constant respect has resulted in a very strange development in their personalties.

Ogon is not particularly attached to any one interpretation of gender, and delights in dressing up however she wants - wearing whatever ornaments and baubles they wish. He will wear as much, or as little as they want as she wanders the Underground, dispensing heat and re-stoking the fires that augment the Core made by the Royal Scientist.

With the Barrier gone and the introduction of human technology, Ogon has taken control of the Underground, leading it with a firm hand and an eye towards turning it into a profitable town - they have a pre-built kingdom already mostly protected from the weather. With the greater fuel efficiency available, greater resources . . he can see a future where the mountain becomes a prosperous hub of progress.

And Here Comes A Spider

Muffet 

On the surface, Muffet quickly had to switch tactics - her baking frankly did not hold up in comparison to the easily-obtained sweets and pastries available. So instead she opened a boutique! And it was a hit. Both the novelty of monster clothing, and tailored clothing to one’s tastes.

It helped that Ebbotton has two colleges.

Much to her frustration, the one she’s interested in . . doesn’t really pick up on that she’s flirting.

Washington Underground:

Oyuki

This lovely, lovely ice-spider maiden has a distinctly maternal side to her, and on the surface is loving running an ice cream shop. Seeing all the children makes her very happy (and she has very low bills in general due to her magic). Unlike a lot of ice monsters, she’s not particularly vulnerable to heat - a human great, great grandmother helps with that, with her boss monster lineage. 

Unlike the others, her ‘family’ of monster spiders isn’t particularly large, but it is full of very large monster spiders. This was a bit problematic for finding work for them, but it turns out ice-silk is a very prized commodity for it’s weather resistance.

Eire Underground:

Muffet ‘Minerva’ Arachnidae

This aggressive businessmonster never expected to marry - she had far too much to do! And most found her far too cold and ruthless to be appealing, shrugging off the most sly of flirting in even her cutthroat business dealings.  And yet nowadays she’s happily married, to not one, but two(three) others in a very solid poly marriage! With children no less!

The story of their courtship is legendary in that Underground.

Being married seems to have only enhanced her business prowess  . . by giving her a softer side, interestingly. Humans respond well to a bit of fairness, it seems. Also, they’re much more interested in art than the average monster.

Russian Underground:

Iktomi

Named for his great-grandfather, Iktomi is one of the few spider monsters left in this Underground, and thankfully not the prime caretaker for them. That’s his twin, Iya. Who actually enjoys taking care of all the others. Not that Iktomi neglects his part - keeping them safe, by both his ability to scavenge and rebuild technology, to fight, and more importantly to trick interlopers in their territory.

Also known as the biggest prankster around. Seriously. He may be able to fix your phone, but you’ll end up with a horrible ringtone that only starts showing up a week later.

Okay, lots of posts trickling in eventually.

‘cause braincrack happened. Trister’s Timeline got consolidated, due to one simple underlying rule of the timeline - sympathetic magic works and things that resemble each other can affect each other.

So there’s four Undergrounds in the timeline. They’re all called ‘Underground’, but eventually they’re going to gain additional titles. There’s four monsters that went through very similiar events, and all have worked on the Core.

A Core that exists in four places at once.

Gonna post about that eventually, but for now . . let’s go into the familiar faces between each Underground! I’m going to do a post per character and give (if briefly in some cases) their position, their duties, and mention their family ties in that Underground.

Risen & The Human Soul

Risen come from Humans. Humans have seven soul traits. So what does that mean for the Risen that come from them? Well, 80% of the time, it’s a clear indication of what magic the Risen has a natural affinity for - blue, orange, yellow, etc.

Overall it doesn’t have much difference in if a Risen beyond that, or if they have high or low magical channeling ability, or large or small magical reservoirs. All monsters of the timeline have that. Those with particularly large ability to channel magic, or large magical reservoirs are considered ‘demi-bosses’, and have an increased lifespan for the type of monster they are. Any monster with an affinity for purple magic will have a much longer lifespan than typical, and generally very robust health - if they fall sick, that sickness has probably already killed others.

But Risen are odd - every now and again, one will Rise with a Determination affinity. And they are terrifying. They will have the clearest impression of their own Echo, of what happened and why.

They are what used to be called Revenants.

Because if that Human was murdered, the Determination Risen would be very motivated to see that death avenged. Unfortunately this tendency would end up painting the whole subspecies in the same brush by terrified humans, leading to the surface genocide of them  once the Undergrounds were sealed.

Green - “What’s wrong? How can I help?”

Cyan - “Opportunities are like punchlines - they take the right timing.”

Blue - “I just gotta be me.”

Orange - “Being fearless isn’t bravery - it’s just being stupid.”

Yellow - “It’s doing the right thing, not the easiest.”

Purple - “This will not stop me.”

Red - “I am not done.”
