Back to the Roots!
Oiling your hair is
– just a waste of time – an icky sticky experience with zero benefits – a time pass activity that makes no difference to the health of your hair – essential but who has the time for all that, yaar!
If this is you, then here is a friendly warning!
Be prepared for lots of hair and health issues including rapid hair loss, thin and ugly hair, and very dry and itchy scalp.
Why has hair fall become so common?
We lead stressed lives. We have replaced the good-old oil massage with hair styling products filled with harsh chemicals. We spend time and money on straightening and other fancy procedures that cause a lot of hair damage. And then there’s pollution and lack of a balanced and nutritious diet.
Net result- The pores in our scalp gets blocked, the natural oil called sebum that’s present in our scalp becomes dry and hard, and we end up with dull, thin hair with no strength and lustre.
What’s the solution then? More chemical-wala hair products? Or expensive hair procedures and what not? Just look to your elders! Maalish, tel maalish!!
Stop starving your hair. Instead, just go back to the daily hair routine that our wise daadis and Aajis followed.
My grandmother was a working woman- a teacher and we are talking about the 1930s here. Despite her busy schedule, she had the most amazing lustrous hair. And she passed on her good hair sense to my aatya and my elder sister as well! Bas hum thode peeche reh gaye!
Watching my Aaji’s daily hair care routine was a soothing experience in itself. She would slowly and methodically separate each hair strand one by one. Then, came a generous dose of warm coconut oil. This was followed by gentle repeated combing. Start at the top and gently go down. To the top and then down. Up and down… and so it went.
Oh and this exercise was always done under the sun in the Aangan. Vitamin D deficiency? Woh kya hota hai?
Simply writing these words transports me back to my childhood and its golden soothing memories.
Hair oil and Vitamin D? That’s it? And shampoo?
No chemicals! Only boiled Shikekai, that’s all my grandmother used all her life. And she could have simply breezed into any ‘ghane mulayam kaale baal’ ad!
So girls, just stop with the ‘time nahi hai’ or ‘next week se pucca’ or ‘chod na yaar, bas healthy khana chahiye’ excuses!
Ask any family member to help you out and have a long, luxurious, and relaxing champi.

If you ask me to describe cold pressed oils in one line, I would say, NATURAL, HEALTHIER, EFFECTIVE AND EXPENSIVE!! Yes, expensive. Why? Let’s find out.
Cold Pressed oils – New Age Superheroes for Skin
‘Chekku’, ‘Ghani’ and ‘Kolhu’!!‘
If you think these are some weird nicknames of my future kids, then well, you are wrong. These are some other words used in India to describe cold pressed oils.
In Maharashtra, it is most commonly known as “Lakadi ghanyacha tel”
So, what is “Lakdi Ghana”?
Lakdi means “Wooden” and Ghana means “Pressed”. It’s a mortar and pestle device made of stone or wood that are used to extract oil from seeds.
If you ask me to describe cold pressed oils in one line, I would say, NATURAL, HEALTHIER, EFFECTIVE AND EXPENSIVE!! Yes, expensive. Why? Let’s find out.
What are Cold pressed oils?
– obtained naturally by crushing oil seeds at room temperature – there is no extra heat and chemicals required to extract the oil
How do you extract oil in Lakdi Ghana? This process involves Six simple steps:
1. Cleaning: First, the seeds are sorted and cleaned from their impurities. 2. Milling: Next, the cleaned seeds are ground into a paste using wooden rotor. 3. Pressing: This is the most crucial step of the extraction process. First, this paste is slowly churned. Soon the oil starts separating from the solids. Then, a wood press is used to press the oil out, ensuring that the heat does not exceed the room temperature. 4. Clarification: Once the oil is pressed out of the seeds, the extract is passed through a clean muslin cloth to separate the solid material and to remove the impurities, if any. 5. Decantation: In this step, the remaining solids are separated from the oil by allowing it to settle by force of gravity. 6. Filtration: In this last step, oil is again filtered through a muslin cloth to remove any solid particles.
This is a more tedious method of making oil. There is no supply of external heat, and the quantity produced is also less. This oil retains natural nutrients, antioxidants, aroma, texture, and flavour better.
Now let’s talk about Refined or hot-pressed oils and what are they.
Iss story ke Villain hai – Hot pressed oils! Exactly opposite to cold pressed oils, these oils are extracted by using high heat (200°C) and chemical solvents. It may mean the oil was treated with acid or purified with an alkali, or bleached. It can also be neutralized, filtered, or deodorized. All of which require chemicals like Hexane! Due to chemicals and heat, most of the nutrients and flavours are lost.
While Cold pressed method is “Bahubali”, Hot pressed is “Bhallaladeva”. Cold-pressed oils are fighting their way back into market despite being beaten up by the cheaper refined oils over and over again.
Cold pressed Oils for Skin and Hair
If you are looking for an all-in-one saviour like “Bahubali” for your beauty regimen, say hello to the following Cold-pressed oils. Let’s check out what makes these oils so fame-worthy. While there are many in the market, these are some oils I can swear by.
Coconut Oil –
Don’t underestimate the power of a common “Coconut”. The way good nutritious diet can transform your body, coconut oil does the same for your hair and skin. Loaded with vitamins and minerals it promotes hair growth, improves skin texture, and stimulates blood circulation. Pro tip- Put 2 to 3 drops of warm coconut oil in belly button before sleeping and say bye-bye dry chapped lips.
Castor Oil – Whatever it touches, is turned into gold! This sticky potion makes everything better. Be it your skin, hair, or nails, it nourishes all. Pro tip: Apply it to sole of the foot before bedtime. It removes excessive heat from the body.
Almond Oil –
One oil that can play any role you want. Being an excellent cleanser & moisturizer, it can improve both complexion and skin tone. It contains Vit A and E which also reduce puffiness and under-eye circles.
Moringa Oil – Referred as “The Miracle Tree”, Moringa seeds have a high oil content and contain many nutritional compounds, including monounsaturated fats, protein, sterols, and tocopherols. If Acne breakout is your problem, then this oil may be your solution.
Walnut Oil – No one likes seeing innumerable hairs falling each time he/she combs. A great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, Walnut oil will help you fight hair loss. Also, works great for wrinkles.
Apricot Kernel Oil – This light, non-sticky, gentle oil has Vit C and E working in partnership. Its easily absorbed because it resembles the skin’s naturally-produced oil sebum. It nourishes the skin and lowers the appearance of face wrinkles, fine lines, and blemishes.
Things to keep in mind while choosing a cold-pressed oil
• Understand the ingredients and their properties. • Understand your skin first then make a choice. • Make sure you do a patch test before using these highly concentrated oils. • Try different alternatives before settling on a choice. • Big brands need not be the best choice. If hot-pressed is Hulk, then cold-pressed is Dr. Banner. Better to choose a brand that specializes in Ayurvedic products and cold-pressed oils.

What is A1 and A2 Milk?
The growing incidence of lifestyle diseases is a warning to us. We are victims of the commercialization and so is our indigenous breed of cows. The desi Indian cow is a very unique species and needs to be conserved. The best way to recognize them is the hump on their back and long horns. It is said that the rays of sun enter the body of the cow through the hump which makes their milk, dung, and urine medicinal. If they are not exposed to the sun, they will not get the Vitamin D required to produce calcium in milk. The health effects of milk may depend on the breed of cow it came from.
Currently, A2 milk is being marketed as a healthier choice than regular milk. During my research period, I have met with so many important and knowledgeable field persons in dairy business. Here are some views on what they think about what is A1 and A2.
Joint Secretary Dairy Development in the Ministry of Agriculture, Rajni Sekhri Sibal said, Milk and Milk products are an important component of the Indian diet. Milk is considered as nature’s perfect food and is an important source of nutrients including high-quality protein, calcium, and micronutrients.
More than 95 percent of cow milk proteins comprise of caseins and whey proteins. Among the caseins, beta caseins is the second most abundant protein and has an excellent nutritional balance of amino acid. Some health problems including coronary heart disease and type 1 diabetes are believed to be associated with a tiny protein fragment, which is formed when A1 beta-casein, a mutated protein found in the milk of some cattle, is digested. Milk that does not contain this mutated protein (A1) is called A2 milk. Studies conducted on Bos indicus, the native indigenous breeds of cattle, have revealed that they possess A2 allele which expresses itself as A2 milk, hence a source for safe milk.

Taking care of a baby—from bathing to feeding to skin care to kadhas and balgutis—requires a holistic system. The best choice for baby care products would be a seller who understands this and adopts the same approach when manufacturing baby care products.
A Quick Guide on Buying Quality Baby Skin Care Products with Safest Ingredients
It’s probably impossible to find anything softer and more delicate than your baby’s skin. Obviously, the baby care products you choose will have to be softer and milder and yet nourishing and effective at the same time.
Finding the safest baby skin care products goes beyond just scanning the list of ingredients. That’s important but there’s more to the process of identifying the best skin care products for your baby.
Quality Certifications
Your search for quality and safe baby care products will become a lot easier if you stick to manufacturers with quality certifications issued by government and global certifying agencies.
A company with Food and Drug Authority GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), government AGMARK, and ISO 9001:2015 certifications is obviously more trustworthy than somebody who has just created an Insta or FB page to resell ‘quality’ baby skin care products.
These certifications aren’t just fancy designations. Companies have to follow very rigorous quality standards and processes to qualify for these certifications, especially when making products for baby care.
So, even before you look at individual products and their ingredients, the first step is to look for quality certifications.
Ayurveda First—Always
The simplest way to choose baby skin care products and other baby care products with safe ingredients is to stick to natural, organic, and herbal ingredients. This makes Ayurveda the obvious source for your baby care products.
From the right set of herbs for making massage oil for babies to the mildest natural ingredient for baby scrubs, Ayurveda is a treasure house of knowledge about safeguarding our physical and mental health and wellness.
But just anybody can claim to make ‘Ayurvedic’ products, right? This is where government certifications help weed out those who simply want to use Ayurveda as a marketing tag without really being committed to using genuine Ayurvedic ingredients and manufacturing practices.
Check the Ingredients List
Never ever buy a product for your baby without going through the list of ingredients on the product’s label. If the ingredients are not listed, then just dump it because it’s a warning sign.
Second, don’t presume all chemicals are bad. Obviously, some types of chemicals like sulphates are best avoided because they cause more harm than good to the baby. But some mild chemicals used in the right quantities can be good for the baby’s skin.
So, prefer massage oils, and mild baby shampoos and bath soaps made primarily with natural ingredients. A tender coconut tearless shampoo with mild and safe preservatives used is obviously a better choice than one filled with chemicals.
Soap containing the goodness of Panchamrut—the five natural products commonly used in skin care— and glycerin will cleanse your baby’s delicate skin of all the germs without any risk of allergies or rashes or itches.
Taking care of a baby—from bathing to feeding to skin care to kadhas and balgutis—requires a holistic system. The best choice for baby care products would be a seller who understands this and adopts the same approach when manufacturing baby care products.
