I was listening to some irish songs last night on youtube and...

EVERYONE LOVES IT! Literally everyone in the comments was begging us to keep the Gaeilge alive! It’s literally only us, the actual Irish, who are apathetic about Gaeilge. So, so much history and culture is held in the language and we’ve seen the greatest decline in Gaeilge since 1900, since the British left. The decline of Gaeilge is equally our fault is it is theirs. And it’s only going to decline faster and faster with all this international English language media being thrown at us everywhere, on social media, radio and television. The fact that I can set my phone and laptop’s language to Gaeilge and never see a word of it speaks for itself. One comment particularly struck me; “To lose a language is to lose a culture, to lose a culture is to lose a people.”

I love my English lectures but one thing that genuinely upsets me is seeing how many works of Irish literature are claimed as or assumed to be “British literature”. Like Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde and Seamus Heaney weren’t British artists...they were Irish. Why does Britain get to take credit for Irish pieces???

Holy Trinity and Purgatory Below this resplendent vision of the Trinity—God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (shown as a white dove)—are souls in purgatory represented as anguished, naked figures in partial darkness. The light shining down on some of them, and the Father’s compassionate gesture, portend their eventual redemption. Corrado Giaquinto, a late champion of the Italian Baroque style, made numerous versions of the Trinity, but only this one includes purgatory. He painted it when he was living in Rome. The figure of the dead Christ reflects his careful study of Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of the Pietà (1498–1500) in St. Peter’s Basilica. Conservation of this picture was made possible by a generous contribution from Paula Vesely through the Art Champions program.
