The German city of Hamburg has announced an ambitious plan to create, and link, an amazing 27 square miles of new and existing green space all over the city. The plan, called the "Green Network," will effectively remove all cars from the city centre and promote cycling and public transport - and it is planned to be in place by 2034.
If fully realised, the network will cover some 7000 hectares, over half the size of Boston or San Francisco.

The idea of the smart city seems to have triumphed as a term that aims to bring together the link between the twenty-first century technologies and their deployment in the city. Even though its narrative compresses very diffuse profiles, interpretations and definitions, the smart city –no matter you feel comfortable or not with the term itself- has gained a privileged position in the whole scope of urban discussions and particularly in the field of urban technologies. But after some years of massive attention, the list of skeptics and openly critical positions keeps growing.

Rubbish, recycling and city care survey results
On a recent survey we performed, concerning rubbish, recycling and city care in Athens, we came across some very interesting facts. About 60% of the people in question believe that rubbish and the lack of care in our city is a very serious problem, while 38% believe that it also has a very negative effect in our psychology. When asked whether they believe taking care of the city is the state’s business, 40% are not certain, while 45% believe it is. A very large number of the respondents, 56%, are saying that they would like to participate in an action concerning the welfare and betterment of our city. About recycling, 52% are saying that they recycle in a regular basis, but they believe that the recycling infrastructures are not satisfying (80%). Analyzing those results, we can see that the problems we are facing today are known and that the people are willing to make a difference. Maybe what they lack is the right motivation and guidance to start taking action.
A Day With Atenistas
Saturday the 18th of January was a very special day for us, since we collaborated with the Green Team of Atenistas in order to renew a street in the centre of Athens.
It was about Perikleous street, a sidewalk which was abandoned and used as a trashcan , poorly lightened during the nightime.
The plan was a new "city" to be made, a city inside a city. A skyline of a city was painted as a background, with a green sky and fans-angels. Also, plants and chairs were added, creating a cosy result which will allure every passenger.
40 people worked together for 11 hours, with a help from the Municipality , who added two more lamps for the little street to be more lightened.
It was a great experience for us to work with them and so inspiring to see that anyone can do something like this, since the ingredients that are needed are good will and love for our city , with a low budget.

Pocket parks by Atenistas!
"When we first came across this abandoned piece of land on Dramas street, we never thought that creating a pocket park there would become such an inspiring and cooperative experience."
