6th December - Do you get a break from school/uni/work during winter?

usually yes! but i’m doing a gap year this year so technically i’m on a break the whole year round!

p.s. i turn 19 today which is so crazy! when am i supposed to actually feel like an adult?

7th July - What did you do during the summer when you were a young child?

I used to spend summers traveling a lot, and I'm hoping to get back to that soon!

8th July - What’s your happiest summer memory from your childhood?

My happiest summer moment has to be the few years where I lived in New Zealand for the summers. I loved the country so much and I would love to maybe move back one day.

9th July - Do you usually go on vacation during the summer?

I used to, but now with working and school (and COVID) it's getting a lot harder. I hope to be stable enough to get back to it one day, though!

I’m so happy to be back at a regular, in-person semester. Of course, things still aren’t completely normal. The US still has very high COVID numbers so it’s just as important as ever to keep following precautions. Now that my schedule is a bit more normal, though. I’m hoping to get back to posting regularly.

Gender neutral in Arabic...?

Instead of making a list of terms of endearment or general vocabulary lists, I decided to dedicate a post to discuss this.

The question is, how can you express yourself or refer to others in a gender neutral manner especially if the language is gendered?

In the case of terms of endearment or pet names, it is best to try avoiding using adjectives and pronouns altogether and try to use nouns instead. For example, instead of saying يا حبيبي (yaa habeebi : my darling, male) try saying يا حبي (yaa hubbii : my love). 

Other words you can use :

يا روحي  (yaa rou7i : Oh, my soul)

يا نور عيوني  (yaa nour 3yooni : Oh, the light of my eyes)

يا  قلبي ( yaa qalbi : oh, my heart)

يا حياتي ( yaa 7ayaati : oh, my life)

يا عمري ( yaa 3mrii : it also means oh my life, but it refers to life 

يا عسل (yaa 3asal : oh, honey)

Of course there are cases where you can’t avoid using certain adjectives or pronouns. In this case I would recommend using male pronouns, since the word for person in Arabic شخص (shakhs) is masculine, so if you’re talking about someone and you’re not sure about their gender or prefer to keep it vague, that would sound more appropriate. 

It’s also worth mentioning that, sometimes when you are addressing someone of a really high rank in speaking or when you’re writing formal correspondence, the plural pronouns can be used instead of a singular pronoun. This is really formal and isn’t used in daily situations but it’s interesting to know.

For example if you’re addressing a king it’s correct to say : جلالتك (Your Majesty), but it would be more polite to say : جلالتكم (Your Majesties).  Similarly instead of saying حضرتك (which is a polite way to address someone), you can use its plural form and say حضرتكم.

Oct 25, 2021: Over the second wave lockdowns I was home but unable to find any motivation to work on my thesis. I have been trying for the past few months but have not been able to produce any substantial work. Most times, I find myself reading papers and works related to my work to make use of my time and not waste it sitting idly. But that’s no use if it doesn’t add up to a write up. So, umm.. yeah I’ve been struggling to write. My supervisor has been super understanding and not nagging me which is both a blessing and a curse tbh. At this point I would really love it if she went all bootcamp on me but I also know when that time does come, all hell will break loose and I’d be crying tears all over my keyboard! 

On the music end I’m listening to more raps and currently I’m obsessed with Khh artist Kid Milli! his latest single Kitty (feat. Gidle’s Miyeon) is actually about his kitty! hah! <3

While I still didn’t get time to catch up with basics of history and geography, I’m somewhat successful with finishing the basics of economics. I solved a few past year questions and got about 40-50% right in the static part. Not great but it’ll do for now.

My laptops are getting repaired so, getting things done without one is just a lot of extra work. There is a spare I will get by tomorrow so, I’m a little hopeful.

Also, if you’re reading this and haven’t drank water, here’s a water check 🚰

100 Days of Productivity - Day 94

We got free plants woooooooooo. I haven't found good pots for them yet or named the them so I'm open to suggestions. They are an African Milk Tree and a Tree Aeonium (Irish rose).

In other news I felt very detached from my brown-ness (whatever that means) so decided to rekindle some love for my heritage by eating the spicier pack of mixture I could find. Gordon Ramsay's got nothing on this baby.
