The heat has let up a little at last, but the chemistry building continues being an oven (like most buildings in this country 😐). Still, it's better to be here and do something I enjoy rather than marinate at home. I ran some measurements today and carried out a new synthesis in the meantime. Had a nice chat with my thesis supervisor's PhD student whom I'm really grateful for - he's of great help to me without being patronizing ^^

master thesis adventures #32

I have officially started writing my thesis. This feels like a huge moment. I am excited about this new part of the work, but today I realized that my first approach with it is not working. Following my supervisor's advice I started working on the second chapter, or the first real chapter after the introduction, in order to avoid the block that often comes with writing the introduction to a work. My problem at the moment is that I feel like I am drowning in informations that I don't know where to place, I don't want to repeat, and I do not want to forget about. I decided my next attempt will be to take a few days to write down a sort big index of all the informations I want to include already divided into the various chapters. I am not sure it will work but I hope for the best. I actually think it will be a fairly long process, but if it goes well it should make my writing proces a bit quicker? At least I should do this for the introductive chapter and the one I was planning on writing right now, since they are the two chapters with no primary sources used in them. I will report back on how effective this is, hopefully this weird confusing block I have at the moment is just a starting thing and it will go aways soon.

it’s been a while!!! life got busy, but i recently purchased a cute little casio digicam, so maybe i’ll be inspired to post here more often. i’ve finally settled into my job and my role at the shop after a year of working here, and i got a raise that confirmed the same from my employer’s end so things have been looking up. to celebrate the raise, i decided to buckle down and finally mount the shelves for my workbench that have been sitting around for a whole 12 months, which. frankly, should’ve been done sooner but they’re up now! which is the important part!

my friends and i spent the holiday weekend on the cape, and i got such a ridiculous sunburn that i will be fielding questions about what’s up with my legs for months to come. and boston! boston has been ablaze with world cup folks passing through. i’ve never seen the city like this since i’ve been here, and its all contained to red line accessible areas and back bay. you could take the green line three stops west and all of the sudden things are normal again. but anyway, besides that it’s just been knitting and salsa dancing, books and movies for me all spring and summer… see you soon perhaps :)

Been up since 6am studying. Completed all the tasks I had to upload for my writing class, and am now studying for my linguistics exam that is this afternoon. Honestly? I’m not sure if I will pass. If I fail again, I might just call it a day and settle on switching my major, as I then wouldn’t have to retake the exam a third (&last) time. Really hoping that that won’t be the case though…

this may be an Unpopular Opinion (even on tumblr) but like the 8-hour workday is just Too Gotdamn Long

like even sitting in an office for eight hours a day isn’t particularly pleasant (or healthy, as we are beginning to see) but when we’re talking about doing *actual work* for that same amount time it gets pretty fucking brutal

doing literally *anything* (even leisure activities) for eight hours straight tends to be less than enjoyable but when we’re talking about things like construction, landscaping, factory work, and hell, even foodservice and retail, eight hours is a fucking ETERNITY

i might just be a lazy weak-willed bitch but honestly i think i’m not entirely wrong

this was being worked towards by leftist labor unions way back in the day after the time of FDRs new deal. people in the 40s and 50s were already starting to realize that we no longer actually needed an 8 hour work day or even a 5 day work week.

even with the comparatively primitive factory tech of the time we were already creating a huge amount of excess production back then and companies were making massive amounts of profit. So it already stood to reason that companies should either let their employees work less and thus each employee could work a shorter shift without lowering the yearly compensation of each employee, or in cases where businesses provide an active service they would shorten the shift but hire more people to cover the necessary operating time. but of course that would mean less money for people at the top so companies fought back hard and we ended up with nixon’s bullshit and so on and now its considered the norm for us to spend the vast majority of our lives doing work that really just amounts to waste.

I’d also like to add it’s also been studied and scientifically proven that after 6 hours, we have an extremely noticeable drop in productivity. Sweden saw nothing but benefits from a 6-hour work day, including worker productivity, happiness, and half the amount of sick-leave used when applied to nurses.
