The door banged open and Merlin woke with a start.
“Rats! Again!”
“Wha—”
“I always knew you were incompetent, Merlin, but this is just ridiculous. What’s the point of having magic if you can’t even sort out something as simple as a rodent infestation? Although, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, since they do have more brains than you.”
“I don’t see you having any luck with catching them, either,” Merlin mumbled, rubbing the sleep from his eyes and sitting up.
Arthur glared at him.
Merlin had, in fact, caught and killed the rats in a matter of seconds, with one simple glance, each night they had appeared. For six nights in a row. It seemed someone was having them on.
It was then, after he’d blinked away the last of the bleariness, that he noticed the pillow Arthur was clutching to his chest.
“Why’ve you got that?” he asked, with a note of foreboding in his voice.
“If you think I’m sleeping in there with the rats, you can think again,” Arthur said.
“Frightened, are you?”
Arthur scoffed. “I don’t get frightened. It is critical for a king to have a decent night’s rest so that he is at his best for his people. Now, budge up, will you?”
Merlin rolled his eyes, but shuffled over all the same, moving his pillow so Arthur could plop his down.
It wasn’t like they had never shared a bedroll; camping overnight often called for it on the colder nights to keep all their fingers, toes, and other vulnerable bits functioning and intact. But this was Merlin’s bed. And there was hardly room enough for one man, let alone two, especially now that Merlin’s chest and arms had filled out to rival Arthur’s own.
He tried not to think about the way Arthur’s thigh pressed up alongside his, or the way his tunic rode down his chest, showing off the smattering of blond hair there. Merlin no longer knew what to do with his hands; his arms lay awkwardly, woodenly at his sides, all too aware that the slightest movement might brush their fingers together.
“There were no guest chambers available, I take it?” he joked.
“Shut up, Merlin.”
As Arthur settled in beside him, Merlin stared up at the ceiling; he felt, in that moment, that he would likely have a better night’s sleep in a room full of rats.
Bonus:
“You must think you’re pretty funny.”
“I do, actually,” Morgana agreed. “But if you’re accusing me of something, you’re going to need to be more specific.”
Merlin raised an eyebrow. “The rats?”
Morgana affected a look of total innocence, which, if Merlin hadn’t known her so well, would have been entirely convincing. “Rats? What are you talking about, Merlin?”
“Please. A rat in his chambers one night is a coincidence, two nights and I thought maybe Elyan and Gwaine were having a laugh, but seven nights? That’s got sorcery written all over it, and I know it wasn’t me.”
Morgana smirked. “Well, it worked, didn’t it?”
“What do you mean?”
“All it took was making Arthur’s chambers somewhat uninhabitable and off he ran to spend the night with you.” She grinned, which did nothing to dim the malevolence in her eyes, but rather accentuated it. “Do you deny it?”
“I—well—all we did was sleep!”
Morgana hummed. “That lie might have worked if you’d remembered your neck scarf,” she said, and turned away, smirk firmly in place.
Merlin’s mouth fell open, and he slapped a hand, rather too late, over the bruises Arthur had left there that morning.
“Gwen will be pleased,” Morgana called as she walked away. “The rats were her idea, you know.”
Shaking his head, Merlin watched her go, and as the heat slowly faded from his cheeks, he made a mental note to send both the meddling wretches some flowers.
Merlin BBC Merlin they could never make me form a solid opinion about you !!! World’s bravest coward. The most loyal traitor. The most honest liar. The gentlest murderer. Destroys everything trying to avoid destruction. What a guy !!!!!!!

“Merlin! Today is the day that you will weep in despair! For I, Gwaine the great! Shall beat your high score on pac man!” Gwaine made his declaration loud enough for the whole arcade to hear.
“Sure Gwaine, eventho you haven’t reached half of my score yet.” Merlin laughed at the pouting Gwaine while Lance rolled his eyes.
“Please children, behave in public.”
“Ok daddy~” Gwaine earned a smack to the head for that.
The arcade was their space but most importantly where Merlin felt the most badass. He could easily beat everyone in most games. He had made a name for himself as “Emrys”. The name was displayed as top one on most of the machines and Merlin did all he could to keep it that way.
Every Friday the trio would visit the Arcade and have the time of their lives, Gwaine would declare his victory will take place on that day and Merlin proves him wrong while Lance tries to impress the cute girl that works there by his racing skills.
Among all the games, Pac man was Merlin’s favorite. His score was way higher than the second place and it almost seemed impossible to reach. He prided himself the most on it. Every Friday he checked to see his name on the top of the leaderboard.
Although this Friday, the prideful smirk was wiped away.
“WHAT?!”
Gwaine peeked through from behind Merlin and whistled at the sight he saw.
“Damn mate, never thought I’d see the day. He really gave you a run for your money”
Merlin glared at the display. Up there, where his name should have been, was a new player and a new score.
Futureking
“What kinda lazy ass username even is that.”It didn’t matter. It was time for Merlin to reclaim his throne.
After God knows how many hours Merlin ended up banging his head on the machine.
“You do realize you’d have to pay if you damage it Merlin.” Lance’s exhausted voice was enough to stop Merlin. He looked back to see Lance sitting backwards on one of the motorcycles patiently while Gwaine had rested his head on his shoulder, drooling all over his sleeve.
“Shit. How long has it been?”
“Im pretty sure they’ll kick us out in a few minutes if we don’t leave right now.”
With one defeated look at the screen Merlin left the Arcade for next Friday. He told himself that next week he would be there earlier and would play harder. No matter how great futureking is, Emrys is greater.
Merlin had anticipated his battle on Friday all week. He had lunch while watching speedruns, he had dinner while there were videos about pac man in the background. He lived and breathed pac man to the point that Lance had messaged him to get his ass out and touch grass. By Friday, Merlin had memorized the whole history behind pac man and he was ready. He was gonna get there early. Gwaine and Lance were going to join him later due to having a life and he had planned to show them his victory by the time they arrived.
His enemy futureking will no longer be on top. Merlin was going to overthrow him once and for all.
All the firing ambition was gone when he saw what he had feared the most.
Out of commission
The machine was covered with a purple blanket and a sign over it to tell players that the machine will not be working for a while.
“-but you don’t know when the machine will be fixed?” The posh sounding voice caught Merlin’s attention. He noticed two other people standing next to the machine. He recognized one as the girl lance had a crush on.
“No sir my boss only informed me that the machine will not be fixed anytime soon.” The guy she was talking to was abit taller but not taller than Merlin. The colorful lights of the arcade reflected on his blond hair and Merlin was so glad Gwaine wasn’t there to tease him for all the oogling.
“Do you remember the top score at least? Or who it belonged to?” The girl was clearly getting impatient with him.
“Memorizing high scores aren’t in our job obligations, sir.” And with that, she left the guy.
And at that moment the guy caught Merlin who was definitely not staring.
“Uh,Hi! Hello! I see you are also disappointed by the machine not working?”
Smooth Merlin ,very smooth
The blond sighted and nodded. “I just needed to see if my score was still on top. Guess I won’t know if Emrys managed to beat me or not.”
That made all the hearts he was imagining around the blond disappear.
“I’ve seen that Emyrs’s score on top a few times he is really skilled.” Merlin unashamedly promoted himself.
The blond grinned, Merlin had to drag his eyes away from the crooked yet endearing grin he was faced with.
“He is skilled, but not as good as me. Beat his ass last week.”
…endearing smile my ass!
“Sorry, what was your username again?”
“oh, it’s futureking.” The stranger said with a shrug.
Not fair, totally not fair. Merlin wanted to fill a complaint against whatever force that decided his enemy should be hot and skilled.
For the @merthurmicrofic prompt: sickness, words: 1071
It should be romantic, poetic! Even heart-warming! The idea that your soulmate can draw on their skin and they appear on yours should be beautiful. They would either be an amazing artist and turn your body into a canvas or be so sloppy , that would you smile at how adorable it is.
Fate intended for people to have romantic stories based on this. But not all people used it as mature adults. Fate had to sit and watch idiots in love fall into even stronger denial. The last straw was when people started drawing genitalia on their faces to piss off their soulmate.
So fate declared that whenever two soulmates were close to each other but wouldn’t cooperate, they must start to feel sick. The sickness would grow the longer the idiots insisted on their idiocy…
“You do realize those are just fairy tales right Merlin?” Will leaned on the desk with his arms crossed, judging Merlin, again.
“Don’t you have a full sleeve of butterflies on your left arm?” Merlin looked up from his laptop and stared back at his best friend.
“That part yeah, not a fairy tale.” Will straighten up and shrugged. “But the disease? Or what, lovesickness? You can’t tell me you’re worried that you might end up with some sort of rare disease because your soulmate is an ass.”
“He is a prat and an ass and someone who will get us both sick, watch me prove this theory with my own health, Will.” Merlin sighed and closed the laptop. He had always been excited to find his soulmate. He couldn’t wait until the bond got strong enough for them to draw on their skins. But when it did, he got disappointed rather quickly.
The day he felt he could write something for his soulmate; excitement was bubbling out of him. He wrote a whole paragraph on paper. Edited the whole thing. Asked his mom to edit it again. Read it out loud in front of the mirror multiple times. At this rate, he could recite the whole thing from memory.
He started to write it on his forearm the next day.
Hello dear soulmate!
I’m Merlin! What’s your name? I’m 9 years old! How old are you? I like drawing! Do you like drawing? I will draw a sword I learnt in class for you! :)
Bye
And he waited.
And waited.
And waited more.
He was starting to lose hope when one day he felt a tingling sensation on his wrist. He gasped as he watched a very neat handwriting, his soulmate’s handwriting! Was appearing.
My father said no son of mine will associate with dark arts. Don’t ever address me.
The sadness in Merlin very soon was replaced by anger. Which ended up with him drawing a poop on his cheek just to irritate his soulmate. And he kind of secretly hoped that this would make him talk more.
But a response never came. And Merlin was starting to feel bad for what he had done.
Hello again.
I’m sorry for the bad drawing. Can we be friends? Please? :(
The nine-year-old Merlin never got a response since then…
And Merlin spent the next decade, trying to not think about it.
It wasn’t easy to not think about your soulmate when everyone around you found theirs already. Will showed up with a sleeve of new tattoos almost each week. Gwen had already found her soulmate, Lance, and they always exchanged small sweet messages to each other. Gwen’s hands were basically filled with heartwarming messages.
People wore their soulmate arts on a daily basis. And even though Merlin no longer envied them, he had started to worry about something else. Getting sick.
His soulmate never wrote anything on their skin, while Merlin had reminders and bunch of pen smudges all over his hands. So, this made it difficult to even guess who his soulmate could be. The guy could walk past Merlin and he would never know! And next thing he knew, he could be sneezing and burning in fever and fall behind his assignments. University was brutal and Merlin couldn’t let a prat make him fail.
“Hey Merlin! You there?” Merlin was pulled out of his thoughts when he noticed a cup of coffee being shaken In front of him.
“Gwen! You’re my hero!” He happily accepted the coffee.
“You never call me a hero even though I get you coffee all the time.” Will grumbled as he hugged Gwen.
Merlin was too focused on coffee to respond.
“Is he searching about the soulmate sickness again?”
“Gwen, all I ever see him do is search for the soulmate sickness. I’m surprised that he passes all his finals.”
Merlin put his coffee next to his laptop. “I do study, unlike somebody.” Gwen laughed at the offended expression Will made and soon they were deep in conversation.
Of course, some prat had to move too close to their table and bump into it. Of course, Marlin’s coffee was gonna be the one that spills.
“Are you kidding me?!”
The stranger looked past his shoulders, his broad shoulders, with indifference. “Maybe next time don’t put it too close to the edge.” And he left. Leaving Merlin gobsmacked and coffeeless.
“What the fuck?” Will broke the silence with his eyebrows dangerously close to his hairline.
Merlin had hoped that, that was the last they would see of the rude guy. His hopes and dreams had been crushed the moment he saw him in his class. Sitting in the front with his laptop open and laser focus on the professor. Merlin had later learned that the rude guy was an extremely talented transfer student named Arthur.
That meant war. Because not only was he rude but now he was Merlin’s rival. Merlin had to work double the amount to secure his place at the top of the class.
So, every exam had become a battleground. Merlin used any excuse to show off. He would answer the professors’ questions or casually drop his papers in front of Arthur, only to show that he had scored really high.
And soon, Arthur had also started to participate in this.
“Oh, only a 96 Merlin? I guess not all of us are smart enough.”
“Hey Arthur, did you see the scores board? didn’t see your name up there, man I guess we can’t win all the time.”
“Of course you got an 80 on this, I’m not even surprised Merlin.”
“HA! A 100! Arthur’s gonna be so mad.”
“MERLIN!” a loud bang on his desk made Merlin jump from his nap. “Will, what is wrong with you?! actually, good thing you woke me up, I need to review chapter 5 again.”
“Ugh Merlin, you can’t be serious.” Wills frown grew deeper when Merlin sneezed. “You need actual rest, not neck on book shrimp style nap.” Merlin blew his nose into a tissue while rolling his bloodshot eyes. “What I need is to study, the last thing I need is to fall behind Arthur because of this sickness.”
“ARTHUR IS ALSO SICK!”
“Wait what?”
“Arthur is also sick so you, the biggest idiot I’ve ever seen, need to take it easy! Seriously Merlin you look miserable I can’t believe I have to forc-”
“Wait, wait, wait Will. Did you just say Arthur has been sick too? For how long?”
“I don’t know man, maybe as long as you? It doesn’t matter; did you just listen to what I said? You need to res-”
Merlin’s feverish brain had no logic. Coincidence? Brain didn’t care.
Merlin listened to none of what Will was saying. He shuffled through all the used tissues on his desk to find a pen.
I’m gonna get a B because you stubborn prat! got us both sick!
This time though, Merlin didn’t have to wait for long.
For all of Uther's lectures that Arthur was his sole heir to an energy empire and thus a prime candidate for a nine-figure ransom, Arthur had never taken his warnings seriously. Much less after the explosive fight last Christmas and subsequent loss of contact. Arthur had a job as a personal trainer, was going to school at nights to become a physical therapist, and the only indication of the exorbitant wealth that remained in his name were the quarterly trust statements that still reliably arrived via Royal Mail.
Fate was mocking Arthur. For his hubris, he now listened to his kidnappers consider if they should cut off his ear.
"Daddy still hasn't responded to the ransom request," one of them snarled. It was hard for Arthur to focus his vision with a swollen eye. "The deadline was two hours ago."
"He doesn't think we're serious," other man responded. He twirled a serrated blade in his hand. "Let's send him a present with our new demands."
They turned to Arthur, and he had not yet been beaten enough to be numb. "Don't," he choked out, useless. One hand gripped his hair, yanking his head back. The blade pressed against his cheek, and Arthur squeezed his eyes shut, clenching his jaw.
He could be brave. He would not scream, and he would not beg, and surely his boyfriend (if he ever saw him again) would still find Arthur acceptably handsome even maimed—
There was a tremendous groan, and Arthur's eyes shot open just in time to see a large object slam against the opposite wall. His captors left him, turning to the gaping hole ripped open in the warehouse wall, shouting and and grabbing their weapons. Arthur's vision focused enough to see who was stepping through the makeshift entrance.
Merlin.
Merlin who two days ago had been trussed up and hanging from Arthur's living room under the reinforced steel beam, tipped back with the dreamiest smile on his face, a look of utter contentment that gave Arthur a surge of pride nothing else could ever match. Merlin who Arthur had insisted stay the night, because they had never done suspension bondage before, and Arthur wanted to keep a close eye on him and make sure he didn't drop. Merlin who Arthur drew a bath for in the morning, massaging out the sore muscles and putting lotion on the rope bruises, and treating Merlin to a home cooked brunch for being such a good boy the night before. Merlin who had seen Arthur off with a kiss on his cheek and a reminder of their date on Friday, and Arthur had been so full of joy and satisfaction and pride and love that he immediately left for a run in an attempt to burn off the lingering high.
And then Arthur had been knocked out, and woke up handcuffed to an iron pipe in an abandoned warehouse. And now Merlin was here, gun on his hip, fire at his fingertips, taking a man's life without even a blink.
It all happened rather quickly after that. So quick that Arthur did not notice there were several men dead until his eyes fell on their unmoving bodies, all of them his captors. And maybe there were others with Merlin as well, a bearded man carrying a submachine gun, a wiry one with a sniper rifle, checking the bodies for signs of life with the casual efficiency of trained operatives.
But all he could truly understand was Merlin, who rushed towards Arthur with a cry that did not match the savagery he had just displayed.
"Arthur! Oh, god—" He knelt in front of Arthur, fingers trembling as they reached out. "You're awake, good— can you hear me? It's alright, I'm here, it's over now—"
Merlins' hands were feather-soft as they ghosted over Arthur's bruises— and oh, Arthur knew the technique. He knew what lay beneath the black tactical vest that Merlin wore and the heavy belt on his hips, the love bites and rope burns. He knew every pliant inch of Merlin's body under his touch.
But, as he met eyes that were still flickering with gold, it seemed he did not know Merlin at all.
