The name of the project, Greenvale Manitou, has several layers of meaning. A "manitou" is an Algonquian supernatural force that pervades the natural world and transcends narrow-minded concepts such as good or evil. The "Greenvale Manitou" is a "spirit of nature", literally a "manitou of the green vale(s)". It is the main inspirational force behind my music, which aims at finding the crux which connects us all via the exploration of groove beats, trance-like loopy vibes, or primal rhythms that highlight a sense of community and survival, like they did for our common ancestors. Following that spirit of detachment, I insist on escaping niches as much as I can. I like to play a variety of instruments, explore many genres, and collaborate with other creatives. "Greenvale Manitou" is also a reference to the crossing of Greenvale Avenue & Manitou Street in Northfield, MN, where I built my home studio from scratch. Based on a crossroads, the name thus also symbolizes meetings, exchanges, partnerships. Culture as fluidity, not as exclusivity. Note that the word "manitou" has been borrowed in French language, following the many trades and bondings between French voyageurs - whom several of my Breton ancestors were - and the Indigenous People of the Great Lakes in the early 1600s. While the word still carries its original meaning in French, it has come to figuratively mean "guru", "kingpin", or "mogul", depending on the context. It is also homonymic with "manie tout" in French, which literally means "manipulates everything", as in "is handy with everything", "is a Jack of all trades". And indeed, I am a self-taught multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter producer French voyageur whose sound is spiritual, communal, and nature inspired. I primarily focus on raw feels and emotions, more than music theory. I am also highly critical of the many abuses of so-called "civilized" groups and societies. I have had the privilege to grow up in or work for many of these collectives in my life prior to the music scene (private hospitals, big money enterprises, the restaurant business, blue-collar steal, plastic or even chocolate chain factories, the French military police, the Burgundy wine business, the Catholic Church, and most recently, Academia as a dual Masters + Ph.D professor). I have lived and travelled in several countries for elongated periods of time. I have studied and speak several languages, dead or alive. I am defined by the plurality of my life experiences. I know the pluses and minuses of each of these groups, their limits and, sadly, some of their daily crimes too. This large gathering of insights grants me a perspective on life that's often unrivaled. It is very palpable in the way I try to remain wild, non-abiding, of no party or clique, plural and anti-monolithic in my words and actions, as in my music and lyrics. The logo was designed following self-imbued shamanic visions I had back in 2018 in the Cannon River Wilderness Area. While entranced, I saw a silver white spiked salamander materialize from the branch of a dead elm tree. Given the nature of the experience, I wanted the logo to be more suggestive than denotative. Whatever the actual totem is, the ritual was very much about the joining of both hyper inner and outer gazing. For the logo, I knew I wanted something that was equally fluid. It emanates from a circle, the geometrical shape that best represents infinity - in and out - and that is considered most elegant across cultures. The salamander itself is hidden from view. You can only guess at what possibly is dactyles and a tail. Tilt you head to your sides though, and you might see a different picture. Either a very happy smiley face, not unlike the Nirvana logo (I grew up in the grunge era), with headphones covering its left ear. Or else hands reaching out for a branch or a vine.
