Character study of the most beautiful boy in the wasteland
this comment was so important to me as an ussop fan bc it reinforces an idea that ive had bouncing around for a while about ussops' characterization.
i think that ussop being a "coward" makes sence when you consider the devilfruit powerholder and super human abilities that surround him. Ussop is an excellent sniper and invents useful gadgets that have save the straw hat pirates numerous time but he is constantly being put into close combat situations where those skills do not translate well. being afrade makes sece, wanting to run away makes since. ussop is aware of how absolutely overpowered the people that surround him-luffy litteraly has the powers of a god, zoro can cut ships in half, sanji can walk on are and kick so hard he catches fire-and he is painfully aware of how much weaker he is, he would be an idiot if that didnt make him afraid. physically ussop is just a guy and he is facing threats that could level armies.
but that is kinda the theme of one piece, that alone you can only do so much but by working with friends you can to anything. Ussop does not need to be an overpowered fighter, he needs to be the sniper to make the team complete. and the fact that he is afraid, the fact that his fear doesnt magically disipate but he still acts to save his fears fully knowing the danger he is putting himself in makes his moments of action so much more meaningful
i like the steps the second season took to emphasize ussop's fear as logical and understandable and something that makes him stronger, we definitely get hints of that in the anime but i like how blatantly they laid it out especially with his conversations with the giants
I'm watching Wok of Love and once again I think the love triangle should simply be solved through polyamory
Oh fuck right off!!

Cast of The Winning Try for Dazed Korea - August 2025
mr milchick berating ms huang by saying “you must eradicate from your essence childish folly” only to turn around and reveal its likely a childhood mantra that he used to beat himself into submission and that both ms huang and mr milchick are people of color picking petty fights WITH EACH OTHER as a result of the pressures put upon them as theyre trapped in between their white employees and white employers like dude we are not beating the systemic racism and cycle of violence allegations
honestly i think the marching band sequence was one of the most horrifying sequences in the whole episode.
this whole season has been milchick silently contemplating his place at lumon, particularly in regards to his race, and yet he is still pushing through even after abuse from kier "himself". he is still performing.
and frankly i don't think it's being taken as seriously as it should be by the audience!!!!!!
i get that that is partially because it is absurd and out there that lumon would have a whole marching band and partially because tramell tillman brought so much oomf to it (i still cannot believe that this is one of his first screen acting gigs - he is such a good actor). and also, it's meant to evoke the first season's dance sequence (but i also don't think that's taken as seriously as it should be by the audience soooo--- ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
but like — i felt a similar kind of horror watching the marching band sequence that i did watching get out and us. like. watch this black man in white gloves and a cane who has been consistently put down and othered for his race throughout this entire show, perform at the request of an automaton of the white man who very likely built his company on the backs of former slaves at the end of the civil war, whose company who still effectively employs slave labor and indentured servitude two hundred years in the future.
for milchick, this season began with lumon black face and ended with, effectively, a lumon minstrel show as someone else put it.
that is horrifying.
there was obviously so much happening this episode. however, i don’t see enough people discussing milchick’s scene.
the way he literally is practicing using paper clips and forcing himself to dumb down his language. actually heartbreaking. his hands shaking, his voice breaking.
it’s that moment right before deconstruction of your religion where you can feel it starting to slip through your fingers, so you clench them into fists and double down on your commitment to it because without it, your entire worldview falls apart. and he doesn’t want all his years of service to lumon to have been wasted.
i’d call myself a nida apologist but she did nothing wrong so there’s nothing to apologise for
what if i was fed up with the horrible people in my life and all i wanted was to be in a horror movie so i could brutally hurt them and you were a demon tied to me through a talisman and you said that i had to kill three people in three days or the world would end. what if you made yourself into something beautiful just for me. what if we failed and the world ended but it’s okay because there was nothing in the rules that said anything about you having a human companion in the void you were being banished to. what then???
so there’s this disco demon…
Open your eyes, then you will see.
