Spread this *everywhere*. It’s the only article that correctly presents a timeline of the hate and harassment in the Star Wars fandom since 2015, and how women are treated within fandom walls. All accompanied by insightful data and analysis.

This is really interesting because it’s a comparison of Anti rhetoric and Alt-Right rhetoric around Star Wars as represented by bullying hive minds on Twitter and Tumblr that essentially shows an overlap in tactics regardless of the actual opinions about content.

Aside from that there’s also some good historical background and context of the ways in which “fiction changes reality” arguments have been used to support censorship, again, regardless of the content.

I think it’s worth reading even if your opinions on the movies don’t necessarily line up (speaking as a person who has legitimately no investment in SW ships) just for the sake of understanding the methods of social manipulation and the way people play off each other (with the assumption that if you’re reading this on my blog you are not someone who bullies, threatens, or baits other people over something as trivial as fandom, which is what this is about. Not what you ship.)

Here’s an excerpt RE: that context, though it’s noteworthy that the first half of the article is about the Alt-Right’s so-called “fandom menace” (ie, the people who harassed Kelly Marie Tran and earlier)

10 seconds later remembering Rey Palpatine, Rey Skywalker, "your power comes from him", Rose's teeny amount of screen time, Ben Solo dying after decades of abuse and manipulation with only having a few seconds happiness, the hundred fake death out scenes, retconing tfw and tlj, that akward tug of war over a ship, Knights of ren hyped up and then wasted, another stupid world destroying weapon that's easily destroyed plot, burying the lightsabers on a planet that held such misery for the charachters, the trio scenes feeling forced, the pacing-

Let me get this straight…

They decided to make a movie taking into account feedback and complaints that certain fans had about the first two films in the trilogy. That resulted in a fan service and nostalgia filled mess that made little cohesive sense and has been slammed by critics and fans and is now the worst reviewed Star Wars movie.

They had a stellar cast, in particular Academy Award Nominee Adam Driver, one of the best actors of this generation.

He played Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, arguably the best and most popular character of the ST.

They gave him no dialogue in the second half and completely underused this immensely talented actor yet he still gave it his all and stole the movie.

They killed off his character in the most tragic, unsatisfying way.

Now, a month after the movie was released, this character they killed unceremoniously is all anyone can talk about. The one thing everyone can agree on is that Ben Solo and Adam’s portrayal of him was the highlight of the film and the ST.

#BenSoloChallenge was trending.

In memory of this character over $80k has been raised for Adam’s non profit organisation, Arts in the Armed Forces.

Reylo has skyrocketed in popularity and the fandom has created so much new content.

The Rise of Kylo Ren #1 was one of the best selling comics of 2019, even though it was only released on December 18, two weeks before the end of the year.

Adam Driver has been nominated for an Academy Award for the second year in a row.

No one is talking about the trio, Palpatine’s return, Rey Skywalker or any of the nostalgic fan service. It’s all about Ben Solo.

They in no way did this character’s journey justice. They threw him under the bus for their own selfish reasons even though it didn’t make sense for the narrative. They tried to throw him into a pit never to be seen again but the jokes on them because now Ben Solo is more alive than ever!

I hope Disney realises they made a huge mistake in killing off this character and prioritising their childhood nostalgia over a well written story.

They said it would pass 1 billion this weekend and it didn’t.

Let me get this straight

So Kylo Ren gets his face sliced open by Rey in TFA

Literally cut open like a steak 

And about 24 hours later, she just pops up in his room while he’s getting tHE EXACT WOUND STITCHED UP

This, this is how he responds?

This girl literally was so pissed at you that she sliced your face open and left you in the snow on an exploding planet (can I call that a planet?) 

You should be salty in some capacity 

But instead, we get the worlds largest kicked puppy 

You can see that it’s literally a, “Am I dreaming?” moment. He’s out of his mind that his super crush has materialized in front of him. 

Hell, he’s not even the tiniest bit pissed at her! 

Why? You ask. 

I’ll tell you why - It’s two reasons. First, because she’s the first person to see him for everything he is instantly.

Not because she’s crazy powerful (even though she is)

Not because she’s got a natural talent with the force 

No, because she got him right off the bat. 

“Your afraid?” 

She knew right away that he was scared of never living up to essentially any of his family members and was deeply confused by this, but he didn’t spook her what so ever

Nah, Rey is tough as shit

She’s like, “On Jakku, you fight and do what you need to do.” She doesn’t have time for his fear. She gets it, he’s human to her in this moment. 

He’s mesmerized. 

This brings us to reason number two - He was fascinated with her the moment he saw her mind for the first time. She’s suffered just as much as he has and he sees the instantly with the first look in her mind. 

He has one conversation with this girl and two mind reading sessions before he’s essentially all in. 

Give her whatever she wants

Or what he thinks she wants

Of course he’s not mad at her

He’s already falling in love with the girl 

She’s the most like him person he’s ever met in his entire life

He will try to give her anything he thinks she could want

He will figure it out eventually

A ripped up face didn’t stop him

fuck this, and fuck anybody who thinks that this is some kind of poetic or bittersweet ending. It’s not. Ben died right after he freed himself from the pain not being able to relish in his newfound freedom. Ben wanted to live. Ben wanted to live with Rey. And nobody is going to change my mind about this. His end was the most tragic shit ever put on screen and three weeks after I still cannot believe it actually happened.  WTF Disney?

JJ and Chris turned rey into some conduit for OT nostalgia. She doesn’t even have her own arc. She has a hood to homage to leia. She holds Luke and Leias sabers. She’s descended from “sith royalty”.
