And you’ll know more about it than the cops do.” His eyes went from that hand to Frank’s face. He was staring deep into his old friend’s eyes, thinking about how to start. “We are generally ten men. The main group, I mean. We try to be as private as we can, but every now and then someone leaves and someone new comes in. The-” He stopped, trying to think how to call the one that was murdered. “The victim is new. This is his second meeting with us. He was introduced by a very, very dear friend of mine, Richard Fitz. They were, hm lovers. Of some kind.”

“It’s usually the lover. 7 out of 10 times.” He give out the statistics he’d got in his head. These kinds of murder could easily be solved by following the lover as a lead, but Frank’s always make sure his investigation isn’t biased or he’ll miss something. He hates that. “But in this case, might be a little different.” The detective shrugs, finally get his hand out of his friend’s knee after realizing he’s touching him for too long. “Most of your friends are discreet, right? So there are chances some of your friends knew this person already and not telling you.” Men are like this. He has lots of friends of a friends who is gay but not knowing they knew each other. Knowing someone you shouldn’t risks exposing your secret and people tended to act like they don’t know each other. “Ten? That’s lots of people. They could all be the suspects, including you too.” He didn’t expect this much people from this ‘meeting.’ This was also new information for him about Jake too. Is he having sex with this much men at the same time? He rarely able to hold one a time, let alone having this much people knew he’s gay. “We could take a look at that room, and cross out the ones with strong alibi. He sure can just give a call to his friend and he’ll be involve with the investigation, but these local police, they don’t want ‘a city detective’ sticking his nose into their business, so let’s leave that as a final choice and just gathers information they told the residences here at this manor. “I’ll help you. Don’t worry.” He give Jake a smile, sure that he needed something to cheer him up. That must me a traumatized situation finding a body in his own house. Frank understand that entirely. He went through a war and working in this field where involves lots of dead people.

The more Dan said, the more it seemed to confuse Benji, with the roundabout ways with which his partner spoke. Nothing was really clear - he didn’t work for the retail company, but he also did. It was all leaning very much into what he suspected; that Dan was somehow in a similar line of work to what Benji did, however he still couldn’t be sure whether which side of the coin these ‘good people’ were on. As Ilsa had once said, we only think we’re fighting for the right side because that’s what we choose to believe. Was he fighting with him or against him? If he was fighting at all. 

“Dan, you’re gonna have to be a little more specific…” he began, eyes never leaving the other man across the table as he tried to process what he was learning. “Are you essentially saying to me that you’re not who you say you are? Because I think I know where you’re going with this, but I have to be sure.”

“Honey, please. I am still who I am, the same person you knew the entire time. It’s just my job, and that isn’t what define who I am. Okay?” Dan tried to be the calmer one so he won’t freak more the hell out of Benji. It was a shocking statement coming out of nowhere on a typical dinner between the ordinary couple. They started off with Dan lying about his actual identity but he’s pretty sure he could fix this with his honesty. “Let’s say that I’m— WE are protecting this country, no— every lives on Earth from the bad guys.” said Dan, tried to simplify the description of his job as much as he can. He reaches his hand onto Benji’s, rubbing his thumb on the back of his partner’s hand for a bit. There was something about the strange behaviour that Dan was displaying in that moment which was leaving Benji feeling rather uneasy. Not because he didn’t know what Dan was referring to (although he couldn’t be sure right now), but because the way he was awkwardly hinting at not working in sales and the fumbling nature of his words was exactly the way he might approach telling someone what his true job was. He continued to stare at his partner for a few more seconds before snapping out of it as the other man began to serve up more food onto his plate.

“No, wait- what do you mean by working for someone else?” he asked, not wanting to straight up say what he suspected just in case, but needing to know. Because if Dan was in a similar line of work to him, that could mean a number of things from ‘ally’ to ‘enemy’. “Who do you work for then?”

“Not the retail I’m working with. Yes, I’m working with them too right now, but not that way. Wish I could tell you more about this, but they’re good people, those people I’m working for.” Dan also doesn’t know about Benji’s real job and will never suspect about that even if the man would shove the hints right into his throat at some point of their relationship. He wants to tell Benji everything but that would be too risky. Not that he doesn’t trust this man he’s in love with but if he knows too much about whatever he’s working on, the ‘other side’ would take advantage of this and use Benji against him. He couldn’t lose both Benji and the international security that he managed to keep in balance this entire time. If something happens Benji just could keep his identity clear not knowing about his mission at all. “I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you this earlier.”

It had been a relatively uneventful day for Benji, with mostly mission reports to be finalised which meant a lot of paperwork. Which he hated. So when he got home to their shared apartment, he was looking forward to relaxing with his partner and enjoying dinner together. But he was just finishing off a mouthful of carrot when he heard the question coming from Dan, and he lifted his gaze. 

“That’s one hell of a conversation starter.” he replied, a small chuckle passing his lips. “Not sure what you mean, though. Care to elaborate?”

“I’m not actually a salesperson.” He repeated almost the same sentence he said earlier, but this time only the actual part he meant to say. Dan never did this before. No one he dated whether men or women (back when he still thinks he’s straight) ever get him to this point where he think he should really tell them the truth because he doesn’t want to hurt their feelings. “I ah— works for someone else that is not, uh— my retail.” The sentence: ‘Hey babe, I’m a spy working undercover and I lied to you the entire time.’ sound much more informative than what he actually said but that would be too straightforward and as if he was throwing an atomic bomb at Benji at their table. “Here, eat more chicken.” He’s nervous as hell, maybe talks about this later when he’s actually ready for this so he tried to change the subject and give his boyfriend more baked chicken breast on his plate.

in his honest opinion, it was a catchy name. not that he was from mississippi or badger, but he guessed it was confusing enough even for the guy in front of him to question the thought process with the name. “the least you know, the better, right?” howie shrugged lightly. he honestly couldn’t answer his question, but it was only his guess to the choices that went into choosing the code words, even though it isn’t just mississippi. a light sigh of relief escaped from howie as he watched the stranger lower his gun, causing him to slowly lower his hands without making any sudden movement. his eyes briefly moving to the gun and noticing how the guy was holding it, the gun wasn’t firm nor exactly tight in his palm. it was always a rule to keep fingers off of the trigger unless someone was planning on using it. gun triggers were more sensitive than people could expect or how the movies eluded to. random discharges were rare with new model guns, but howie still kept a mindful note. pursing his lips lightly, he reluctantly accepts the offer and takes his hand before pulling himself up. “..thanks.” but soon enough he paused and briefly turned around to show his back and under his shirt. he wasn’t reaching for his gun on his back, but his back pocket to pull his wallet out to not cause any confusion before he turned back to the guy. he pulled the slip o f paper out that badger gave him if there was any sort of trouble before offering it to him, it stated ‘mississippi is as southern as it gets’. “i honestly got no clue man, i was just here to get a bag of coke that reggie forgot the other night when he tried to make a deal with marco, but max came instead and he didn’t know that his cousin was asian.” honest to god, he had no clue who this guy was and he could only assume there was some sort of misunderstanding. a brief nod to hearing simon’s name. “cool.. cool, i’m howard but people call me howie.” the male lightly motions his hand to his chest. “so, what are you doing out here?”

Howie somehow scared the shit out of him when he’s standing tall. This guy is ginormous. People said he’s a little man, but this guy is huge as if he’s David facing Goliath. He startled as Howie turns the other way. His heart drops down to the ground. The little man though this man’s going to grab his gun and shoot him before he could even move his legs. This was a living nightmare until he saw it was just him showing that he’s reaching for the wallet. “Wow, this handwriting is shitty as hell.” said Elias, moving his glasses for a bit. This scribbles on the paper does say Mississippi though he couldn’t catch any sensible words from the lines written on the paper in the first look. “They said I should be waiting for that Mississippi guy here at this specific time today, and you showed up.” He cut their conversation to the point. The story Howie told him was weird. There’s too many people in the story and he couldn’t catch up properly. All he heard is just this man came here for the coke and that Asian cousin thing. He would say Howie is wasting his time but he doesn’t want to be rude. The faster this job done the faster he could go to the next step. His plan could wait but he doesn’t want it to go any slower then it is at the moment. Those guys also move and trying to covering up the track as he followed the trails, if he wait any longer it would be harder to find the person he’d been looking for. “Uh, does anyone told you you should met a guy here for a job? I am that guy. They said you could take care of the ‘stuffs.’ People I worked with tole me you’re the best around here. Can you help me?” This meeting is confusing the fuck out of him. He wish there’s a better way to hire a hitman. This looks more like shit show than a cool serious-looking encounter he saw in the movie.

I know that you are a great man. An honest and hard working one. I need your help, Frank.”

“I’m glad you cal―. No― not that word.” He clear his throat for a bit. Frank did this a lot when he’s nervous. “What I mean is you called the right guy.” It would sound weird if he said he’s happy Jake called him because someone died. Frank is bad with words. He knew what he should talk but couldn’t process the words and speak it out loud properly. That’s why he’s still single and have a really small group of friends. Frank moves a little sitting on the couch, hands on his both knees because he doesn’t know where to put them. Clearly that he get a little awkward being here, but in a good way. “Thank you for your kind words, pal. So, how can I help you?” There is always a hand for this old friend. Just one call and he would do anything for him. Jake doesn’t know why he did that but that’s what he feels. If there’s anything he could do to help Jake, he would do.

Jake closed the door behind him. In the library, he and Frank would have a lot more privacy. And Jake knew he needed it. After the last few days with all the cops and the investigating scene going on, things were a mess. Most of his guests kept to themselves, in their rooms. Now that the body was taken away and the house was silent, all of them were still quiet in their own affairs. Jake, as the owner of the house, had to make things roll. And Frank was there on is request. A friend from the past, unrelated to the events. “Thank you for coming so soon, Frank. All of us here are willing to go back to our lives but until this is done, none of us will. We are all too afraid of the speculations that will come once the thing goes public.” He walked to the window, watching the garden covered in snow. When he turned back, he went to sit on a couch and made a movement with his hand so Frank would sit too. “I hope the room I chose for you is good enough. Was the temperature good enough? This house can get quite cold some days.”

“It’s perfect already. Thank you.” This house was just the same as last time he’d been here years ago, reminds him of the good old time here with Jake when he was young, but that wasn’t the reason he’s here today. He was called because of the murder here at this mansion which by now should belong to Jake, not his father like back in the days when he’s a family’s friend came here every summer. Frank is coincidentally paying his parents a visit not far from this place, so he decided to give Jake a help with the case. “Nice to meet you again, Jake.” He decided not to get into the topic immediately but show some signs of empathy for his old friend. They haven’t seen each other for a while. Unlike the mansion, Jake looks different but he couldn’t tell how or why, while Frank thinks he’s still the same but just looks older, creases and wrinkles everywhere. He sat on the couch next to Jake but not too close to him, then look out at the window, enjoying the view of the garden in the snow. “How is it going?”
