MUST READ:
Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche
“I am a forest, and a night of dark trees: but he who is not afraid of my darkness, will find banks full of roses under my cypresses.”
Thus Spoke Zarathustra is Friedrich Nietzsche’s masterpiece; he has called this philosophical piece “the deepest book ever written.” Although a grandiose statement, he may not be too far off. Thus Spoke Zarathustra flirts with the entanglement of the beauty between Western philosophy and poetry.
Zarathustra, the fictional character Nietzsche has created is his outlet in exploring dangerous philosophical topics, such as the “death of God.” Zarathustra has abandoned his solitude in the mountains to enlighten the world about his epiphany: the possible divinity of humanity as God’s successor, the Ubermensch. The Ubermensch is superman, an overman; he is the ultimate goal for humanity. The Ubermensch is the the answer for the death of God and the creation of new values.
One of the most interesting concepts in Nietzsche’s philosophical approach is his nihilist diagnosis and contradiction of it. He constantly speaks of angels and other mystical creatures. Perhaps Zarathustra’s idea of the Ubermensch is merely wishful thinking.
Written in four parts, Thus Spoke Zarathustra had little recognition in Nietzsche’s lifetime, but it has become a staple in Western philosophy and literature. Written in narrative prose, Nietzsche’s philosophy is overwhelmingly attractive.
We recommend you hold off in reading this novel until later in life. It is exasperatingly beautiful and thought-provoking. It is also a humbling read, but an unforgettable one.

[Miniature Book Design by Andrea Campomanes]
According to UNICEF, 663 million people worldwide do not have access to clean drinking water. The book’s technology can successfully turn even diluted sewage into filtered water that’s comparable to the tap water in America.
How it works: Tear out a page, slide it into the filter box, pour in the contaminated water, and what comes out is safe to drink.
One book can provide someone with clean water for up to four years.
Each book costs pennies to produce, but funding is desperately needed to help bring it to the market.

I like books that aren’t just lovely but that have memories in themselves. Just like playing a song, picking up a book again that has memories can take you back to another place or another time.

Special Sashimi by Mirim Seo
Philadelphia based artist/designer Mirim Seo sent her Special Sashimi project to me last week. For the first two or three pages, I thought “Oh, cute. A book about Sushi” … and then a few pages later, I gasped.
“Special Sashimi is about the slaughter of dolphins in Japan. The story depicted in this book is true. Each year Japan fishermen kill around 2,300 dolphins as a form of pest control, which has been accepted as tradition. And the killed dolphins end up in freezers and served sashimi in Japan. Illustrated with hand-sewing and watercolor on fabric. With this book, I hope to spread the true and help stop the senseless killing of the Taiji dolphins.”
