This is an expansion on the Centering information post I made a while back, so the first set of steps is the same.
Energy manipulation is one of the two biggest things that I believe need to be studied before you jump headfirst into magickal practice, alongside visualisation.
Energy manipulation is used in so many situations that I consider it to be vital to future magickal practice, it is used in: centering, grounding, circle castings, shielding, sensing, charging, spell casting, divination, rituals and other magickal practices, the list is honestly too long to write them all out. In fact, energy manipulation is used so frequently that you may not even notice you are doing it.
Energy Manipulation Guide:
🌿 Stand with your legs a shoulder width apart, in a quiet, preferably calmly lit room where you will not be disturbed.
🌿 Close your eyes, take a few calm deep breaths and relax.
🌿 Sense your energy within you and latch onto a small amount, imagine this as a ball of light and draw it towards your core, finding a comfortable location to hold it. Don’t try to force it, allow it to move into its most comfortable location.
🌿 Visualise the ball of light, maintain it, sense the energy, it may pulse.
🌿 Once you feel comfortable, draw energy into the ball of light from your limbs, allow the ball of light energy to grow and brighten.
🌿 As it gets larger you may begin to see colours and textures, allow this to occur naturally, don’t force anything before it is ready.
🌿 When it is at a comfortable size, no larger than the area in which the light has formed. Hold it there, never letting it dull and shrink, or increase and brighten, much like a muscle, it will take time and practice and try not to hold your breath.
🌿 Once you are successfully maintaining the ball of energy, you can now mentally latch onto it and push it around your body.
🌿 You can move it around your core, practicing control over it, understanding the way it moves in response to you.
🌿 Once you are able to do this a good technique for future workings is to move the energy into and down your dominant arm.
🌿 Stop at intervals as you move, allowing the energy to remain constant, if you lose any along the way, take a moment to recollect before continuing.
🌿 As the energy moves beyond your shoulder you may feel a tingling or odd sensation down your arm, this is completely normal.
🌿 Push it down your bicep, over the crook of your elbow and into your forearm.
🌿 Remember not to hold your breath.
🌿 Once beyond your wrist and into your hand hold it in the palm of your hand, you may feel your whole hand tingle, maintain it at a constant strength.
Once complete you can take it a step further:
🌿 Once in the palm of your hand, split the energy ball into five, and direct each segment into the tip of a finger, this can be done all at once or individually.
🌿 Maintain the energy in your fingertips for a while, before drawing in and letting energy grow, allowing the balls of energy to fade and brighten, fade and brighten.
🌿 Once the energy is in your fingertips you can place your other hand over top, don’t touch your hands together, sense the energy in one hand from the other.
🌿 When adept at this exercise you may be able to jump the energy into your other hand.
🌿 Once ready you can draw the energy back up your arm, moving slowly and returning it to your starting location before releasing it.
Once mastered you can utilise this in most magickal practices, I use this in divination readings, circle castings, spells and rituals that I undertake, I am never without energy manipulation in m practice.
With time this practice will become easier, and the colour and texture of the ball of energy may change somewhat, whatever happens just let it happen naturally.
For some people the exercise can be draining, this may be because too much energy is being allowed to flow past your hand and into the outside world, to fix this you can ground, or eat some food and get a good nights rest.
I really hope this helps someone out.

🌿 Visualization is often known to be the key aspect of the basics, without it, magickal practice is a lot harder to do.
🌿 Visualization may sound like a very complex term, but it simply means, the ability to visualize something in your mind, a lot like daydreaming it is the ability to see something in your minds eye.
🌿 Without visualization magick is very hard to undertake, the practice of being able to visualize is key to: energy manipulation, circle casting, centering, grounding, chakras, and more... some people find it comes naturally, while others need to take longer to effectively undertake it.
🌿 It is an almost childlike technique of seeing something that isn't really, physically there, much like an imaginary friend or the daydreams you create when staring out of the car window, the ability to visualize is a powerful tool in magick and in life.
I will go through the technique I utilised over a decade ago, although it's origins are unknown to me it has proven to be a successful technique. Below will be the written technique, if you intend to practice this, it is best to give it a read through prior to attempting as reading will break your focus:
Step 1: 🌿 Close your eyes, breath deeply and slowly, imaging your stress and worried thoughts melting away with the outwards breath.
🌿 In your minds eye see a blob of red floating in the air in front of you, small at first but ever growing, this blob is 2D, it grows into a perfect circle.
🌿 Touch the blob and see it spinning in your mind, allow it to rotate and reveal its 2D shape.
🌿 When the red circle stops spinning, visualise it becoming a 2D apple, with a small flat green stem and leaf.
🌿 Spin it again, seeing the leaf from two different sides.
🌿 When it stops spinning, mentally transform it into a red 3D apple, its stem and leaf becoming more lifelike.
🌿 Once again spin the apple, seeing it from all angles.
🌿 When it stops spinning, add highlights and shading, the shine on the apple, the discoloration of a leaf or a slight bruise.
🌿 Once more, spin the apple seeing different bruises as it spins, see the leaf moving gently as it rotates.
If you struggle with step 1, stop here and restart from the top, with time you will get it, it just takes practice.
Once you have seen the 3D shaded apple with the occasional bruise you can move onto step 2.
Step 2: 🌿 Visualise a chopping board forming below the apple, and a knife appearing above the apple, slicing it into quarters.
🌿 Watch as the quarters fall onto their backs on the board, take a good look inside.
🌿 You can see the inside, the seeds and core, the yellow fleshy interior.
🌿 Imagine these segments floating over to a juicer, dropping inside, the lid closing and the juicer turning on, transforming the apple segments into a juice.
🌿 A glass appears below the juicer and golden apple juice is poured out of the juicer into the glass, you can also visualise the juice floating into the glass.
Step 2 is a far more complex practice than step 1, but with time it can get easier, wait till you have successfully completed step 2 before moving into step 3.
Step 3: 🌿 Visualise yourself picking up the glass of juice and drinking it, visualising the taste of the juice in your mind, it’s sweet smell.
Some people really struggle with this last part, but will time, practice and patience you will find yourself being able to complete this full technique in no time. You can even change the fruit into something more tricky like a pineapple or a watermelon, whatever you like.
Some people are far better at visualization than others, it is a skill that takes practice, time and patience to get right, don’t get down-heartened if you don’t perfect it in one try, everyone learns differently and will get there in the end.
I really hope this helps some of you interested in getting started with visualisation, it is definitely a worthwhile technique to learn in the long run.

Disclaimer: all information in this post is my own personal opinion and belief system, you do not need to agree with me on this topic, if you take anything from this post be aware that this is my personal belief that is not shared by everyone.
Witches appear to be a confusing topic to many, the questions of “what spell will turn me into a witch?” “What kind of witch am I?” “How do I know if I am a witch?” are thrown at me on a daily basis, so I decided to attempt to sum it up into a singular post (wish me luck).
🌿 A witch can simply be described as a human that uses magick.
🌿 A witch is not a mythical creature or a different species.
🌿 Unlike Wicca, you do not have to be initiated into becoming a witch, you can choose to call yourself one from the moment you begin to practice witchcraft, or you can choose not to take the name "Witch" at all.
(Personally I chose to take the name ten or so years ago, once I had collected enough information to consider myself a true practitioner).
🌿 Witch is also not a name taken only by women, despite what men often assume. Witch is actually a gender neutral name for a practitioner of witchcraft, although many people particularly men feel more comfortable being called wizards, mages or spellcasters.
🌿 Witches look just like normal people, we don’t have green skin, pointy noses, or warts, we look just like everyone else.
🌿 You don't have to ever call yourself anything as a practitioner, I have known people who never call themselves anything, despite being long term practitioners.
🌿 You don’t need a coven to be a witch or practitioner, many of us are solitary (such as myself) while others enter into covens. I would never recommend a coven for a beginner as it is hard to know what is and is not normal for a coven when you are just starting out.
Alongside the questions regarding how to become a witch, I get a lot of questions about types of practitioner and whether any one is stronger than the other, I have listed out three of the most common types of specific practice:
🌿 A Solitary witch: is one that practices alone, they do not involve others in spells or rituals. (This is the path that I chose).
🌿 A Family Witch: is one that has family that practice the craft close at hand, they often learn from their relatives rather than books, passing on family practices and traditions. Being a family witch does not give you special abilities though, unlike what some like to believe, a family witch is no more powerful by their blood than a solitary, the only difference is the environment in which they practice. Also some believe that abilities are passed down though generations, like empathy.
🌿 A Coven Witch: is one that solely practices in covens or with a group, this may sound really scary but a coven is just a group of like-minded people who enjoy spell-casting together and enjoy being around others with the same interests. A coven witch is no different from a solitary or family, the only difference is that they celebrate events together and do large rituals and spells during each month as desired. Joining a coven is a big step, and is not recommended for beginners in my opinion.
The “type” of witch someone is has become a highly common question, especially among beginners, there are too many “types” of witches for me to list them all, but I have listed a few. This being said you do not need to select any of these. These are only a guide for those who wish to understand what to call themselves, you can pick and choose from many open paths, however a named path is not a requirement to be a “true” practitioner (this this is collated from my personal grimoire, the original locations for information are unknown):
🌿 Kitchen Witch: A witch that works specifically with magick associated with cooking and the kitchen, commonly found crafting spells into food, making potions and drying herbs.
🌿 Green Witch: Utilizing plants in herbal and natural magick, they are likely to be using some form of plant life in many, if not all of their spells, knowing huge amounts of their magickal and medicinal properties.
🌿 Hedge Witch: These witch's use a type of magick associated with spiritual work including astral projection, healing, OBE's and more.
🌿 Faery Witch: One who uses their abilities to communicate and work with the fae, both in our realm and in theirs these witches have a natural affinity with the fae and are often found leaving out offerings.
🌿 Sea Witch: A type of witch that uses natural products from the sea, sea shells, salt water, sand, driftwood and more in their spells and rituals. Commonly living by the sea, they have easy access to the sea and have a natural affinity to the ocean.
🌿 Tech Witch: These are witches that use technology to help them in their practice, using circuit boards as altars, wire in knot magick and an online book of shadows.
🌿 Hearth/Cottage Witch: A cottage witch uses magick that is done effortlessly around the home, it can be undertaken during mundane household activities such as sweeping, cooking, cleaning and more, they are often considered to be combinations of herbal and kitchen witches with added extras, this is the path I found myself fitting into.
🌿 Dream Witch: Dream Witch's find they can easily interpret dreams and can easily undertake lucid dreaming. Often finding meanings in every dream they are able to weave magick into dreams and even used them as a way of predicting the future.
🌿 Elemental Witch: An elemental witch will have the five elements in mind during all spells, incorporating them into everything magickal and sometimes non magickal that they do.
🌿 Storm Witch: Storm witches are those that work with the weather and storms to produce a dramatic result. They often find they have a natural affinity with storms and find their powerful emotions and the weather having a huge impact on magickal practices.
🌿 Urban Witch: These are hardy and creative witches, they use drain water, every day litter and sometimes even spray-paint in their spells and rituals. Often very good at using unusual items in place of more traditional pieces they are very hardy and find the magickal beauty in everything urban life has to offer.
🌿 Draconian: A Draconian witch is one that works with dragon magick and dragons found in the astral plane, calling for their strengths in rituals and spells, they can be very formidable.
🌿 Seasonal Witch: Seasonal witches are in tune with nature, the passing of the seasons never goes unnoticed, it is celebrated, they work with the items they have in that particular season, never using out of season items in spells and rituals. They love the variation in seasons and always look forward to the next.
🌿 Spirit Witch: These are witches that find themselves drawn to the dark corners of magick, those that love to work with spirits, sometimes even demons in one form or another. .
🌿 Blood Witch: Blood Witches use blood in many of their spells and divination, whether it is adding blood to runes or into spell jars as an extra boost of personal energy. They are very adept at what they do and it is not one for the faint hearted.
🌿 Crystal Witch: Crystals call out to these magickal practitioners, they may find themselves picking up random stones at the beach, feeling a connection with them instantly and could be hiding a hundred strong collection of crystals under their bed. These magick users know each crystal by name and know all of their properties, very good at crystal healing, and often charging their newest pieces, they find a way to use crystals in every spell and ritual they undertake.
🌿 Chaos Witch: A chaos witch specializes in chaos magick, a very raw and potent magick. uncommon to most but very powerful to those who know how to practice it, they have very passionate personalities and strong minds.
🌿 Sigil Witch: Sigil witches commonly have little bits of paper scattered in every bag and pocket they have ever owned with small symbols and "doodles" on every side, a sigil witch loves to work with symbols, finding new ways to create them and secretly wear them, whether in necklaces or drawn on the backs of their hands.
🌿 Lunar Witch: A lunar witch is one who is attuned to the movements of the moon, they always know when the next full moon, new moon, waxing, waning moon will be and have planned their spells and rituals accordingly. Usually with a new batch of moon water or a few charging crystals ready and prepared to be charged for the next full moon.
🌿 Bone Witch: These are the witches who find themselves being attuned to the use of bone and other naturally collected animal parts. They only take bones from naturally deceased creatures believing it to be a natural aspect of nature.
🌿 Cosmic Witch: These witches have a love of all things space, timing their spells and rituals to the planetary alignments and stars. They may be found with their head in a horoscope book or with an eye through a telescope looking out for the next magickal opportunity.
🌿 Music Witch: With a spring in their step and a song in their heads, music witches have the ability to spell cast with their songs, chants, drumming and musical scores, they can make all music magickal and usually have an ear for it.
🌿 Secular Witch: A type of non-religious witch, they do not use deities in their practice
🌿 Eclectic Witch: An Eclectic Witch is one that takes bits and pieces from many forms of magick, they do not fit under a singular category as each witch will practice a slightly different tapestry of magick.
These are just a selection of the list, there are more added each day and no one needs to belong to any one.
I hope this really help someone out.

Disclaimer: all information in this post is my own personal opinion and belief system, you do not need to agree with me on this topic, if you take anything from this post be aware that this is my personal belief that is not shared by everyone.
One of the first things I recommend beginners to the craft study, is what is real and what is fantasy when it comes to magickal practice. In an age of fantasy novels, movies and tv making the antics of witches more and more realistic, it is understandable why beginners may be confused.
Hopefully here I will go into detail about what can and cannot be done with and in magickal practice and break it down relatively simply:
Witchcraft is NOT Wicca:
This is something that will have its own in depth segment.
All wiccans are witches, not all witches are wiccans.
Magick CANNOT change your DNA:
Sorry everyone who wanted to grow wings, change their eye colour, grow a tail or become a different species, this is simply not going to happen with magick.
Magick is NOT connected to the Devil:
In reality witchcraft at its core has no religion attached and many practitioners have no religion at all (like myself) or don’ t even believe in the Devil as a real being.
It is not an evil practice, but if you feel like it is evil, then maybe practicing witchcraft is not something for you.
Magick CANNOT do the impossible:
If you want to teleport, breath underwater, live forever or heal death that is not going to happen either, magick is an assistant not a fix all, something that isn’t naturally possible, isn’t going to happen with magick.
Magick is NOT something you “own”:
Magick is a natural energy, it is found in everything, living and inanimate, it is not something that a few select individuals “have”, it is more universal than that.
Being a witch is NOT being a different species:
Being a witch isn’t something genetic that is passed down through families, it is also not being a different species or unique.
“Witch” is a title that can be taken when you study and practice witchcraft, some people choose to take the title, others don’t.
“Witch” is NOT a female only title:
Being a witch is not gender specific, anyone can call themselves a witch if they study and practice witchcraft.
However it is not the only title, some choose to call themselves: spellcasters, mages, etc or nothing at all.
Magick CANNOT materialise things out of nowhere:
This goes for anything, sorry to all those people wanting to create food out of thin air.
It also applies to magickal practices to improve wealth and health, etc, you have to work via mundane means alongside a spell.
Money won’t just fall into your lap without you working for it.
Witches DON’T look different:
In reality you probably walk past a witch or magickal practitioner every day without ever noticing, we look just like normal people, no green skin and pointy noses here.
Witches DON’T fly on broomsticks:
The witch’s broom, otherwise known as a besom, may be where this myth came from.
The besom is used as a tool to cleanse the space, not to fly.
Witchcraft is NOT animal sacrifice:
Although in some countries animal sacrifice does still happen, it is rare and is frowned upon by most practitioners.
In reality witchcraft has NOTHING to do with sacrifice and it is illegal to sacrifice a living animal in most countries and states.
Don’t try to sacrifice anything!
Witchcraft is NOT all about chanting.....in Latin:
Although some practitioners choose to use Latin for their magickal practice, it is certainly not a requirement.
It is best to undertake all magickal practice in a language you are comfortable with, if you don’t understand the language, how do you know what you are saying is correct.
Another aspect to this is that not all practitioners even use words (myself included) so written spells are not a requirement.
Witchcraft is NOT all about spells:
It is so much more than spells and can include a plethora of alternate magickal practice, some people have been practitioners for half a century and have never cast a spell.
Witchcraft is NOT about using blood:
Although blood is often used as a potent addition to spells, it is certainly not a requirement and if blood is used should ALWAYS be done safely with sanitary items.
If you feel a spell calls for a personal connection, hair and nail clippings work just as well.
So don’t jump for blood, it is not necessary!
Witchcraft CANNOT control things:
Everyone dreaming of being the next Avatar or Korra will be saddened by this, you cannot control the elements, you also cannot levitate or make other items levitate, that is stuck in anime, movies and manga.
This list will inevitably be added to in time, but these are the main questions I get asked about witchcraft and magickal practice on a daily basis that I thought I would cover.
I hope this helps
- Hearth Witch.
Disclaimer: all information in this post is my own personal opinion and belief system, you do not need to agree with me on this topic, if you take anything from this post be aware that this is my personal belief that is not shared by everyone.
As an active practitioner, I get a lot of questions along the lines of, “I am a beginner where to I begin?” or “What is the best spell for a beginner to try?”.
My instant response is always, Do not start with spells.
This may sound like an odd response to some, but I have found that all magickal workings with no foundation of knowledge, leads to a lifelong practice of confusion and failures.
What beginners don’t yet realise, in most cases, is that there is a lot more involved in magickal workings than simply reading words, or lighting candles, there is a lot more that goes on “behind the scenes” that may not be visible to an onlooker.
For beginners I will always recommend studying “The Basics”, this is a general list of practices and general knowledge that should, ideally, be studied before you even consider practicing spells, rituals or any other magickal workings.
The list generally includes:
What is real vs what is fantasy
The difference between Wicca and Witchcraft
Meditation
Visualisation
Centering
Grounding
Energy Manipulation
Circle Casting.
Although this does seem like a lot of steps to undertake before casting spells or undergoing other magickal practices, these steps allow you to gain a neutral foundation of knowledge that can apply to all practices. It gives you the knowledge to understand and become adept at the “behind the scenes” work of magickal practice and stops beginners from being highly disappointed when their fantasy spell with foundation of knowledge fails.
I really hope this helps some people who are interested in getting started, hopefully all of the links will work, if not please feel free to send me a message and I will fix them.
- Hearth Witch.
As with most grimoires, I find it important to include a small introduction, especially when people may be reading and learning from this grimoire (hopefully).
🌿 Name: Eleanor although my taken name for magickal practice is Arabella.
🌿 I currently follow a hearth witch path and have been following this path for around 2 -3 years.
🌿 Overall I have been practicing consistently for 12 years.
🌿 Although I have in the past I am a secular witch, with no deity associations.
🌿 I am from the UK (this may become more apparent with spellings and locations that I mention in posts)
🌿 My star sign is cancer although I personally do not connect well with the zodiac.
🌿 Over the past 12 years I have studied a plethora of different practices and paths prior to focussing on hearth witchcraft, these include:
Kitchen witchcraft
Herbal witchcraft
Crystal Magick
Candle Magick
Sigil Magick
Rune Magick
Higher, ceremonial Magicks.
Elemental Magick (not bending)
Sea Witchcraft
Herbalism
Colour Magick
Lunar Magick
Cosmic Magick
🌿 Along with practicing many different forms of divination:
Tarot Divination
Rune Divination
Stave Divination
Pendulum Divination
Although I have too many physical grimoires/books of shadows I don’t have anything online that I can look back on whilst on the move and so this will be my online guide to my personal practice.
A disclaimer from this point onwards, everything written in my grimoire, is personal to me, you don’t have to believe everything that I write and it may not match your belief systems, but if you choose to take information away from this be aware that this is my belief and my practice and is very personal to me, we don’t have to follow the same beliefs, we are all valid.
