Today I have for you an album that has a visual and textual accompaniment, so this going to be something a little different. The album is Black Cat Operation by Choronzon released on Foamin’ Sodomy Records. The album’s concept (as far as I can understand it) is cats fighting back to people who torture them with the help of the “entities” Choronzon and Bast using “Black Magick”. I admit it sounds a little campy as a concept, but the album itself is actually a pretty fun listen, though you need to have the visual and textual accompaniment (linked on the album page) while listening to this record to understand what’s happening in the music. The sound of this album is just as trippy as you would expect, it’s a mixture of psychedelic electronics, some ocassional distorted guitars and beats, cat sounds and spoken word. The first track Black Cat Operation is a bizarre slightly cinematic collage of the aforementioned elemens bordering on cacophony and it has those distorted guitars playing Metal riffs. Track two Kitty Cat Revolution is a bit more relaxed, and it’s groove is based on a chopped up synth sequence. Track three Night Of The Ferals is when things get really tense (or hilarious depending on how seriously you take cats) which is an aural depiction of wild cats attacking people with a minimalist synth melody in the background. Track four Xenodimensional Warrior Cats is like full-on cat warfare, with distorted guitars and a slow going beat in the background and yes there are plenty of cat sounds. Track five Wired On Catnip is a short glitchy track, it’s funny, but more like an experiment than a fully worked out track. The last track The Purge has a strong groove, a filtered synth and most of the cat sounds we’ve heard before. It’s unfortunately the weakest track on this album, as it kind of meanders for its full length and doesn’t sound as fleshed out as the other tracks. So as you can read, Black Cat Operation is quite a strange album and definitely not for people who can’t take a little humour in their music or a whole lot of cat sounds, but if you can, it’s worth a listen as it’s still pretty solid music overall.
