How big is Sao Paulo really?
How big is this place actuallyā¦
Well now, how long is a piece of string? Sao Paulo city as defined by Google Maps is shaped roughly like a very sick cartoon puppy ā I mean it has ears and a snout and an emaciated bodyā¦sort of. It even has weird T-rex chicken claws if you take the lakes into account, no? This shape seems to occur frequently:
If this is indeed the size of the city then itās quite easy to calculate: Simply divide into a long rectangle for the body and ears of the sitting puppy and a square for the snout. This approximation gets you (60X20) + (20x20) which is 1200 +400 which is 1600 km squared which is 620 square miles or 160000 hectares or 395368 acres. This is roughly the size of islands like Oahu, or Lesbos or Zanzibar or Skye or cities like London, Sydney or Baltimore for whatever relevance that may have to you, dear reader. This same number comes up again and again even if you use other methods of measuring the pinkish grey mass of urban sprawl on Google Earth.
But for all intense porpoises like you and I, this place is probably more like 100 square km (size of two sheep farms in Australia or 10 cattle farms in Montana or the island of Antigua) Almost all the attractions and markets and funky residential areas and chic nightlife occurs within a 10km x 10km area around the centre. Hopefully someone here can make a diagram for youā¦no, no takers⦠I will draw one on this piece of toilet paper.
Now in our as yet limited experience of this city it is important to note this⦠from the airport you will travel into the city via this highway known as the Marginal which runs along a very smelly foul canal and kinda sorta marks the āmarginā of the city centre. One travels along here for ages as the canal bends south even though its only a few kms (traffic) and hereās the thingā¦you want to live, hang out in and explore everything on the left of the canal (the South or East bank). There are numerous places to see elsewhere but this will keep you occupied for a long while. Merry wandering!
