please help protect trans youth in the uk
so it’s been reported that liz truss, the conservative equalities minister in parliament, has set out a plan for “reforms” to the gender recognition act:
the protection of single-sex spaces;
making sure that transgender adults are free to live their lives as they wish without fear of persecution, while maintaining the proper checks and balances in the system;
making sure that the under 18s are protected from decisions that they could make, that are irreversible in the future.
truss has stated “I believe strongly that adults should have the freedom to lead their lives as they see fit, but I think it’s very important that while people are still developing their decision-making capabilities that we protect them from making those irreversible decisions.”
“the protection of single-sex spaces” would mean that trans people would be unable to use the public toilet of their choice and be unable to access gendered rape crisis centers.
“maintaining the proper checks and balances” means that trans people will have roadblocks to legal recognition - their legal genders will not match, they will be registered wrong on their kid’s birth certificate and potentially denied visitation, they will be placed in underfunded prisons.
“making sure that under 18s are protected” would cause trans children to be unable to access puberty blockers, psychological support, and family counselling.
if these things get through we will see a higher spike in trans suicide rates and death rates due to trans people becoming housebound and depressed.

this government is determined to strip away any rights they can under the pretense of ‘keeping people safe.’ don’t let them.
