I think what makes 12 Angry Men so amazing is that it strongly argues caution WITHIN uncertainty and to question "immutable" facts. Davis (and the movie) NEVER says for sure the kid is guilty or not guilty - there's no way to tell either way. He only puts together the first inconsistency (the El train being too loud for the old man to hear the boy yelling) due to debate and conversation. When the jury actually starts questioning the seemingly open-and-shut case, it's only by putting everything they noticed together, by the process of careful consideration with 12 different people sharing their observations and thoughts, that they notice the holes. The complete reversal of the verdict happens not because Davis thinks the kid must be not guilty and argues as such but because he places importance on taking a person's life. That such an important decision can not be made in 5 minutes, no matter how sure one may be. You have to talk about it. You have to consider it. You have to question it.

I cannot get over this photo. He looks like a dog who's been caught eating people food and feels guilty about it.
