stucky is so gut wrenching, here are some headcanons.
it is so simple to forget that steve awoke only to mourn. he tried to rid himself of his anguish and suffering by charging himself into the sea and yet it was futile, even tried to frame it as anything but a suicide, and yet, he awoke in the new world with the same old weight on his chest. no best friend, no remnants of the life they shared, nothing.
i think he starves himself as a form of coping, trying his hardest to shrink himself into the man that bucky knew, that bucky believed in. sickly and weak, short and frail. because he would give the serum back in a heartbeat in exchange for his best friend.
he faints a few times and feels satisfied cause it is an homage to bucky, i will suffer as you have suffered.
what if in those two years that he and sam search for bucky, they find him. sam knocking him out so he doesn’t hurt them further. and steve crawls over to his limp body and cradles him in his arms, pressing his forehead to his, his gunshot wound dribbling blood onto bucky. he looks at his boyish face and pushes back his greasy brown hair, notices how sunken his cheeks look, how pale his skin is, how light he feels in his arms. and he weeps. tears glowing under the moonlight as they slide down the warmth of bucky’s cheeks.
and maybe during bucky’s recovery, steve watches how much bucky must unlearn, learns about his chronic pain, sees him get through therapy, and one day when they get home he gets on his knees, sobbing into bucky’s stomach and apologizing for letting him fall, apologizing because if he had just leaned further, maybe fallen with him, he could have kept bucky from falling into the hands of hydra. if he had just stayed behind and listened to bucky none of this would have happened. he was so sorry.
Ik they’re separate story lines and all that jazz, but have you considered mer!steve x werewolf!bucky?

I tried to draw adult Steve and Bucky reconnecting as adults after not seeing eachother, aka Bucky trying to court a very shy Steve.
I really like that idea honestly, it’d be cute.
Though I made a few changes so that they’d be together just a little different from original human Bucky and mer!steve
I actually decided to write a little bit about it!

In this universe Steve isn’t a salt water merman, roaming the ocean. He instead lives in a large, manmade, freshwater pond outside of his mother’s home.
Sarah Rogers had found Steve when he was merely a minnow, frightened and to be handed off as a prize at her local towns fair. She was quick to pay off the bored worker and took Steve home, tending to him to the best of her abilities.
Years passed and Steve grew into a happy, curious little boy. He loved his pond, and his mamas fairytales, but more than anything he loved to sing. It was hypnotizing, and garnered the attention of a small scruffy werewolf pup, Bucky. The two would talk, and play, sort of. Not like you can play tag when only one of you has legs.
But as Steve grew from a boy to a man, he started seeing Bucky less, wondering where his friend had run off to. He managed, the best he could, singing, watching the animals that came to rest by the pond. Everything was okay, until Sarah became ill.
She spent her final moments resting under the oak tree reading Steve one of the fairytales from her book, she never did finish the story. Dying beneath the willow. Her body sunk into the earth becoming fertilizer for the fauna.
Steve swears it doesn’t bother him, but the smell still haunts him.
