My personal fav AU’s and their designated tags(will update occasionally):
★ #handler au :handler is an au where during buckys time in Hydra preserum!steve was taken in too, and given the title of buckys handler. His job was to keep Bucky under control and under hydra’s thumb.
★ #hybrid au :chunky dairycow!steve and bull!Bucky, just a silly au of animal hybrids.
★ #secretary au :congressman Barnes’ trying to manage a very bratty, sassy Secretary Steve.
For your handler AU, couldn't they just get mittens (like the fingerless ones they give babies) for Steve so he can't scratch anyone? Or would not having use of his hands trigger him?
Honestly it depends, early recovery time yes absolutely put Steve in mittens. I could alternatively see Steve in one of those long sleeves that have hand coverings attached, to keep him from scratching himself subconsciously.
Mid-late recovery he’d probably be a bit upset and feel like the people he was growing to trust didn’t trust him. The lack of mittens and the regular nail trimming keeps that sense of trust, and with it the cases of Steve lashing out and scratching others lessens. There’s still the occasional accident, but it’s not very often.
But I don’t think it’d ever be triggering, genuinely I think that scratching at himself and others usually leads to triggering his emotions/setting him off.
Handler au having terrible day where everything is too much, sensory wise. This is nothing, I just don’t like my art currently, so I’m gonna yap.

Bucky’s got noise cancelling earbuds on, flopped on the couch with Steve on his chest, along with a weighted blanket over both of them. His nose is smooshed against the top of Steve’s head, breathing in his sweet vanilla shampoo he stole from Natasha god knows when.
Steve on the other hand has a cooling pack on his forehead to tend to his aching head. He’d also just clipped his nails so he couldn’t scratch Bucky or himself, but he’s tucked his hands into the sleeves of his hoodie just to be safe. Quietly chewing on the drawstrings, listening to Bucky’s heartbeat.
When they’re both feeling a little better they share a bowl of chicken noodle soup, Bucky eats most of the soup while Steve eats the bread that it was served with. But occasionally he manages to slip a spoonful of broth into Steve’s mouth without too much complaint.
By night the two are back to cuddling, Steve’s under Bucky now, letting Bucky lay on top of him and rest his head on his chest. Steve rubs Bucky’s hair, letting him talk while he just listens and nods along, chiming in on the odd reference he actually understands. The two eventually fall asleep while buckys reading one of his fantasy books out loud to Steve.

Besides the fact that Buckys a super soldier so his hearing and eyesight are already wild and everything’s already too much, I headcanon he’s got ADHD which doesn’t help with his sensory issues. And I headcanon Steve as autistic so he’s in a similar boat with that.
Art block has hit at an inconvenient time, and my mood has absolutely tanked sooo…if anyone has angsty stucky handler AU ideas please send them my way.
I just want to draw sad boys to cure my everything. Doesn’t have to be both of them, can just be a steve idea or a Bucky idea.
Small update: If you follow my Roleplay account, @stevie-grant-rogers don’t mind the changes! I’m working on swapping it over for my new plans.
I have everything set up, I’m just working on the writing. It’s all weird and mildly complicated now but I hope you’ll enjoy what I’m working on when I can actually get started! :))

I didn’t know if the word itself could be triggering so just to be safe—
Bucky had lost everything after the war, after hydra. His family was long gone, all of his old friends, time stuck beneath the enemies thumb and doing their bidding. The avengers had helped, Sam helped him find a house off on the shore, somewhere quiet he could find himself again. But Bucky just sunk deeper into his depression.
One calm night Bucky couldn’t take it, he walked up to the highest cliffside he could find, and jumped into the ocean. Bucky was hoping the rocks would take him out, but they didn’t. He sunk deeper into the ocean, letting the darkness overtake him.
When he opens his eyes again the moonlight invades his vision, he squints and for a moment he thinks it’s the afterlife, blinking away the salt in his eyes he realizes the truth.
He’s alive, of course. Bucky rubs a hand down his face, not noticing the figure beside him, watching him like a hawk. When Bucky does notice he nearly screams, backing away frantically.
“Who the hell are you?! Why are you naked— what the fuck!” He yells, emotions swirling enough to make his head throb.
The figure doesn’t say anything, just tilts his head. He is indeed nude, save for a large soft fur wrapped around him.

Basically Bucky tries to kill himself and Steve says “Nuh-uh” and saves him…That’s it, okay bye <3
